Terms and Conditions
SHIPMENTS AND GUARANTEE
We will ship peonies from Sept. 1st., until the ground freezes. Iris from July 1st., until the ground freezes. It is best to order early as the plants will then have a better chance to be¬ come established before winter, and you will be insured of securing the desired varieties.
TRANSPORTATION
Must be paid by the purchaser. All orders are sent by express unless postage accompanies the order. Any surplus will be returned to the re¬ mitter. Do not send stamps, send check, draft or money order. No orders filled for less than $1.00.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Are never made unless requested and money will be promptly returned.

SIZE OF PEONY PLANTS
Prices quoted are for standard 3 to 5 eye divisions, with well balanced root system. This size is uni¬ versally accepted as giving the most satisfactory results.
GUARANTEE
All varieties are guaranteed to be true to name and in healthy condition, but should a mistake oc¬ cur, we will gladly replace same. Peonies and Iris are very hardy plants, and seldom fail the most novice amateur, but we can assume no re¬ sponsibility after they have passed beyond our control.

A garden without PEONIES is comparable to a home without pets and children.
PREPARATION OF SOIL FOR PLANTING
Peonies need a rich, heavy soil. When the soil must be “made” the best plan is to dig down fully two feet, deposit a layer of rotted manure and compost a foot thick and then fill in with the finest quality of

soil procurable. Plant Peonies about three feet apart in the row, covering the eyes with about two inches of fine dirt, not more, for deeper planting will keep them from blooming and make weak, slow growing plants. Occasional cultivating from May to September will produce extra growth and give profuse bloom the following season. Peonies should have plenty of sun¬ shine and should not be planted too near old trees, shrubbery or house foundations. The location must be one to admit of good, and easy drainage, for if this is not the case the bed may become water-logged in heavy rains. Never plant a Peony where one has been planted before unless all the soil has been removed and replaced with soil that has never grown Peonies, other¬ wise the plants will remain small and fail to bloom.
For you who are planting Peonies for the first time and do not know the wondrous beauty of the Modern Peony, many, many are the thrills in store for you. The Peony is the grandest of all perennials, with all the delicacy of the rose, only multiplied by a size that overwhelms.
No flower you can mention draws the thousands of visitors to a planting as do Peonies, and there is a reason.
RATING OF PEONIES
The figures before the varieties give the ratings based on 100% and were taken by members of both Peony and Iris societies. This will prove a valuable guide in selecting Peonies. Those without ratings are new and have never been rated.
GROWING PEONIES FROM SEED
Few of the thousands of Peony enthusiasts have ever played the fascinating game of raising Peonies from seed. With very few of our flowers is the pro¬ duction of new varieties accompanied with the same zest, the same demand upon the patience of the ex¬ perimenter as with Peonies and with none are the re¬ turns of pleasure greater.
One’s interest in watching the growth increases constantly as the progress of the baby plant is follow¬ ed, and it is not until the fourth or fifth year after the seed is sown that bloom bearing maturity has been reached. A Peony grown from seed is always a new variety for they do not come true. I have been in the Peony game for over 50 years and have one of the largest collections of high grade Peonies in exis¬ tence, but no single feature is more absorbingly in¬ teresting than the production of new varieties from seed.
I have originated such sterling varieties as Lil¬ lian Gumm, Grace Ott, Vera, Golden Dawn, Onahama, W. L. Gumm, Mrs. W. L. Gumm and many others. For the benefit of those who wish to grow from seed I would offer the following suggestions: As soon as ripe the seed should be sown in a rich medium heavy soil, about an inch and a half apart and one inch deep. Cover with burlap or straw to keep the ground moist and some of them should come up the following Spring. By the end of the third year after planting you can lift the plants and give more room for expansion, planting them about a foot apart.

IRIS
Bearded IRISES will grow in almost any location, providing that the plants have reasonably good drain¬ age. If the soil is inclined to be wet, make the bed 8 to 10 inches deep, placing a layer of drainage material on the bottom, then replacing the top soil. Bearded IRISES do not require a rich soil, but suc¬ ceed best in full sun.
The Beardless Irises, like the Japanese, Siberian, and so on, grow readily in moist places, and are espe¬ cially useful on the bank of a stream, or surrounding a pool or large pond. IRISES well deserve the fore¬ ground and open view. Their contrasting colors pre¬ sent striking displays, they are softly iridescent, mys¬ terious as the opal, hardy as the goldenrod, and no flower is easier to grow.
IRISES are adaptable and desirable for borders, along walks, drives, pools, streams, beds, foundations, terraces, walls, steps, etc. Masses of color are prefer¬ able. There should be 10 to 100 plants of a variety in a solid group for general display.
Bearded Irises may safely be planted at any time, although July and August are considered the ideal months. Many people purchase and transplant Bearded Irises, while in bloom, which permits a satisfactory color arrangement?
Beardless Irises are best planted in early spring or late July, August, and September.
Irises are priced for well grown single rhizomes.
In planting, barely cover the rhizome (the fleshy part of the root), but allow the roots to extend deeper into the soil to act as anchors until the new roots are formed. They may be planted from 10 to 15 inches apart, depending upon the effect desired.
By planting various types, including Dwarfs, Early May flowering, Tall Bearded, Siberian, Water Irises and Japanese, the blooming season may be pro¬ longed from Early May until mid-July.

Oriental Poppies
For dazzling bar¬ baric splendor, the great ORIENTAL POPPIES are abso¬ lutely unrivaled. They may be used singly or in mass, and in either way give a glow of color to the garden that is not furnished by any other flower. The blooms may be kept for several days as cut flowers if the freshly cut stems are immediately singed at the cut surface, or if the stems are plunged at once into boiling water for a moment or two, and then placed in cold water.
Transplanting should be done in August or early September. At this time the plants are dormant and there is little danger of failure. Plant so the crown will be about two inches below the surface of the ground, and after the ground freezes cover with straw or course litter to prevent the plants from heaving. Hardy Lilies
The hardy lilies bloom from the middle of June until about the first of October. When planted in well drained garden soil, with some sharp sand surrounding, the bulb, the following listed varieties, will bloom to perfection. An ideal location is among your peonies. Candidum (Madonna Lily) Pure white, very fragrant; blooms in June; should be planted 2 to 3 inches deep during August and early September. Each 35c, 3 for $1.00.
Regale- — Very large, white flowers, shading to yellow in the center, outside streaked brown, shading to pink; blooms in July; plant 9 inches deep early spring. Each 40c, 3 for $1.00.

HE Gumm Flower marker is the most simple and durable of the many devices made for this purpose. It is constructed piece of heavy wire twisted together and having a heavy zinc plate beaded and crimped into place so that it cannot come out, and the name is written on this with an in¬ delible or “china marking crayon”. As this plate is exposed on both sides the name is written twice and you can see the name from either end of the row.
A special feature of this device is that the name plate can be bent back to any angle to make the reading of the names always easy.
