VEGETABLE SEEDS

ASPARAGUS

This is a vegetable which takes several years to develop to the producing stage. Seeds should be sown in early Spring about 2 inches apart and trans- planted the following Spring to a permanent location. Plants should be set, in rich or well manured soil, about 18 in. apart and with the crown about 6 in. below the surface. An ounce of seeds should produce about 400 plants. We usually have one and two year old plants for sale in April.

BEANS

Beans is a vegetable every garden should contain, both for use direct from the garden and also for canning or freezing. Easy to grow in almost any kind of soil if not too shady. Easiest method to plant the Bush varieties is to drop 2 or 3 seeds in about an inch deep hole and about a foot between each hill. !/ Ib. should plant about 80 hills. Another way is to plant the beans in rows 2 ft. apart and about 3 in. between each seed. The Pole Beans can be planted 5 or 6 seeds around a 6 to 7 ft. pole and with the poles at least 2 ft. apart. Earliest seeding when danger of frost has passed or first half of May, and latest seeding about August Ist for green beans.

An oz. of seed should produce about 2000 plants and a pound enough plants for 3 acres. The earliest varieties can be seeded indoors in February and March and the latest varieties (for storing) started in the latter half of May. The plants should be set at least 2 Tt. apart. Calendula is one of easiest grown annuals and can be sown where wanted, but trans- plants very easily. Many varie- ties are to be had and they are all good. Campfire is about the deepest orange and Lemon Queen the lightest yellow. The rest of the varieties are also more or less orange or yellow in different shapes of flowers.

Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower or Bachelors Button) are easily grown and can be had in sev- eral good colors, although the blue is the most popular. Lately a dwarf compact type, Jubilee Gem blue, has been intro- duced from England. The Gem type is quite distinct from the old original type in being dwarf compact, with flower stems branching up from the base of the plant.
