SPREADING SHRUB EVERGREENS
Pfitzer Juniper—Perfect all-purpose shrub evergreen. Out- sells all others.
Biue\Pfitzer Yuniper—Glauca- tretzi. _Somparatively recent
introduction.
Savin’s Juniper—Pretty for a few years, after which it usually becomes open and leggy at the base.
Von ehron Juniper—Due to its rapid growth and conse- quent dense foliage induced by trimming, it is very good for hedges and for staking into upright speci- mens.
Spreading Jap Yew—Perfect all-purpose shrub, evergreen in sun or shade. Should be used in place of Pfitzers in shady locations. Yews are hardy, not subject to pests or diseases. AS green in January as in July. Will greatly increase in popularity.
Dwarf Jap Yew—Similar to above in habit, but with short- er and broader and very dark needles.
Canadensis Juniper—Formerly used more than at present. A novelty of picturesque and unusual appearance. Va- riable silver blue on under side in fall and winter.
CREEPING OR TRAILING EVERGREENS
Sargent Juniper—Forms a dense mass one foot in height with branchlets slightly ascending at tips. Leaves form a row effect. Foliage becomes blue in fall on older plants. Spreads to 6 or 8 feet.
Procumbens Juniper—Usually less than one foot high with green fat needles. Spreads to 6 or 8 feet.
Andorra Juniper—Blue green summer foliage which turns reddish brown in fall and winter. Grows to a height of 18 inches and spreads to 4 feet.
The above three varieties are slow sellers, but should be used more than they are. They are suitable for founda- tion plantings, beds, terraces, specimens. They are not subject to pests or diseases. Should be sold before layer- ing of side branches interferes too much with central root system.
UPRIGHT TREES
Upright Jap Yew—Broadly pyramidal. Ideal, perfect ever- green. Suitable for corners, specimens, hedges.
Spiny Greek Juniper—Forms a dense broad pyramid with numerous erect branches. Has plump blue green spiny foliage with sharp points.
Irish Juniper—A perfect column of dense prickly foliage with many erect branches.
