75 YEARS

In 1882 Mr. Julius A. Peterson started a florist business with Mr. John W Miller. Greenhouses were built on Epworth Ave. where now is located Ramona Ave. One year later Mr. Peterson bought out his partner. About 1892 greenhouses were built on McHenry Ave., the present location, about a mile from the original site. The houses were first used for cut flowers such as roses and carna- tions. At one time as many as three flower stores or stands were operated in downtown Cincinnati. 1900 saw the close of these stores with the switch to wholesale only from the greenhouses

African Violets were introduced into the United States about 1903. Some of the first were grown and exhibited at Fairmount Park Greenhouses in Philadelphia. Mr. Roger Peterson, son of J. A. was working in Philadelphia at the time. During a visit there Roger brought his father’s attention to this plant. About 1910 one hundred Saintpaulia ionantha were purchased from W. K. Harris Co. of Philadelphia and put into production. This pro- vided a contrasting blue flowering plant to be used with Cyclamen, Begonias, and Hydrangeas. From this time on at least one greenhouse was kept in African Violets. During this period up to the depression these pot plants were the main crops. Just prior to World War I considerable work was done on hybridizing begonias, resulting in the strain known as the Christmas Begonias or Cincinnati Begonias. The finest of these, Melior, is still in mass production at ranges in this BUY and many foreign lands.

During 1927, J. A. Peterson sold the business to two of his sons, Roger W. Peterson and H. Clarence Peterson. Shortly thereafter the depression set in, requiring a shift back to cut flower production — principally Snapdragons, Stocks and Pompons. Still some violets were kept in stock. New varie- ties such as Blue Boy, Amethyst, Sailor Boy, Vik- ing, Neptune, Commodore etc., were purchased from Armacost and Royston during 1935 and 1936.

Following World War II, Henry C. Peterson, the present proprietor, purchased the business from his father and Roger Peterson in May, 1946. Violet production was continually increased until all other crops were discontinued about 1950. Today the entire range of 47,000 sq. ft. of glass is in Saintpaulia and related plant culture.

This catalogue lists the varieties of Saintpaulias (African Violets) and other Gesneriaceae we will have in production during 1957-58. An attempt has been made to list each violet under its outstanding characteristics such as

For those not under color heading a letter fol- lowing the variety name will indicate the color per the following code: White W, Pink P, Light Blue B—, Medium Blue B, Dark Blue or Purple B+, Lavender Orchid L, Reddish Violet R, White with Marking WB or WR.

ORDERING:

The 2%” size are vigorous plants for repotting and growing on or for immediate sale, in bud or bloom if possible. Specify if you desire single or multi-grown plants. These pack in cartons of either 25 or 40.

The minimum order is one carton. Varieties may be assorted with no more than 8 varieties per carton of 25 or 12 varieties per carton of 40. All plants are labeled. When ordering please state if you want only the specific variety or if we may substitute when a variety is out of bloom or out of supply. 3” size pack 25 per carton, 4” at $1.00 each pack 16 per carton, these are not indicated on price list but are available in most standard varieties.

Special quotation on lots of 1000 or more.

Credit extended to established customers.

Accounts over 30 days will draw interest at 6% per annum.

SHIPPING:

All shipments are made collect by Railway Ex- press, Greyhound Bus or Air Freight. For winter shipments we use a double carton straw pack which we believe gives as much insulation protec- tion as any method so far tried. On high value shipments we will prepay protective signature service. On single carton orders the charge will be on the express bill if the consignee requests the service.

DAMAGE:

Cold damage sometimes takes several days to show up. At that time the plants will seem to wilt and probably turn black. Quite often cold damaged plants will seem to have been scorched or burned with hot water or spray material. Under some conditions there is quite often a strong chem- ical odor.

In Case of Damage, call carrier agent immediate- ly and have them fill out joint inspection report, which is used for filing your claim. This claim should be filed by you with your carrier agent promptly, then notify us.

GUARANTEE:

If you follow the above directions we will re- place the shipment and wait for settlement from carrier or their refusal letter.

LOCATION:

We are on McHenry Ave. just two blocks from Harrison Ave. (about 2450 block). Harrison Ave. is U.S. 52 west. We are in the suburb of Westwood, about five miles from downtown Cincinnati.

We suggest, if possible, it is better to drive in and pick up your violets. Let us know what you want and when you will be here, we will have ready what we can pick out for you.
