GLADIOLUS SEED CULTURE Miles C. Labrum

Oe eS TY EE SY RS SPE A NY NS RS i NY NOS RO

Gladiolus seeds are easy to grow. The time that it takes to obtain bloom is determined by several factors; primarily the lengths of growing seasons; the particular parentage; and most of all - PROPER CARE. Many can bloom the second year, but others require an extra season to develop.

Most glad seeds grow to become small corms of variable sizes, upon which they then require a dormant period before further growth will start to attain them to a blooming size,

Prepare a seed bed in an area located in full sun and with good drainage. It is good to build an outside framework (like a coldframe) to offer suvport for a lath shade top and for protection from dry- ing out from winds. Good garden loam plus quantities of peat moss, leaf mold, compost and bone meal all well mixed makes a fine plant- ing medium. Plant the seeds when temperatures get in the 70's or above so as to assure a better percentage of germination and faster growth. Seeds may be planted husked or unhusked, but experience has shown that husked seeds are more likely to sprout better. If your sKin is sensitive, be sure to wear some rubber gloves when rubbing husks from seeds or else a skin rash may result. Soak seeds 4 to‘'6 hours in lukewarm water just prior to planting. Plant seeds 5/8ths inch deep and cover with fine clean sand. Space rows about 5 inches apart, and cover the entire seed bed with a burlap cloth, and water well. From 7 to 15 days later, as many of the seeds are observed emerging (dependant upon weather conditions), gently re- move the burlap, tut never allow the seed bed to dry out. Plenty of moisture must always be maintained. After the seedlings are well up, mulch in between the rows with aluminum foil or Kordimulch. This procedure will save lots of work later in that it will help hold moisture, maintain a more uniform temperature, and control weeds. The resultant corms will also average much larger than when Kordimuich is not used. NEVER ALLOW THE SEED BED TO DRY OUT, but good drainage is essential. Shade the young seedlings with an overhead lattice work until they are about 4 inches tall and sturdy enough to take the full sun. Label all plantings and also map out a paper record. Very dilute applications of a liquid fertilizer such as Rapid-Gro can be helpful, but never exceed the manufactur- ers recommendations. Too much can do lots of harm and may burn out tue new tender growth. About 3 feedings spaced about a month be- sween applications should be about right.

are for your new corms the same as for other gladiolus bulbs. When your blooms appear, be very selective and choose only the distinctive and worthy of being name@. Look for definite improve- ments over existing known varieties.

Happy adventure to you in your greatest of all thrills in the great and fascinating pleasures of growing gladiolus!
