INTRODUCTION

Decreasing timber size, increasing costs, development of new wood products, greater demands for wood products, and more recently the energy crisis are but a few of the reasons why the forest products industries of the Nation are looking at the whole tree above ground as the primary forest product rather than just the main stem of the tree. Interest in the utilization of all tree parts above ground, including branches and foliage, has increased considerably over the past two decades. It has been demonstrated that the crown component of the tree can be used in a variety of ways: (1) As fuel to generate energy, (2) as chips or particles in glued up composite products, (3) as fiber in pulp and paper products, and (4) as a soil amendment or mulch in agriculture and horticulture.

Total or whole-tree utilization is now recognized as a viable forestry practice option. For land managers, timber buyers, and sellers to be able to exercise this utilization option, information on the amount of wood and bark contained in the tree as a whole and the individual component parts (main stem and branches) is needed if they are to make logical decisions regarding the management and utilization of their forests.

In October 1978, the Forest Service Task Force on Whole-tree Assessment recommended the implementation of a national program for the development of whole-tree weight tables for the commercial species of the United States. An advisory steering committee and a project team with representatives from four research work units located in the Northeastern, Southeastern, Rocky Mountain, and Pacific Northwest

Experiment Stations were appointed and charged with developing a manual of

whole-tree weight tables for the com- mercial species of the United States.

The development of these tables was accomplished through a review of the biomass literature developed over the past 25 years. This literature review revealed that much of the information that is available on whole-tree biomass is very difficult to assess, compare, or combine because of the differences in the sampling methods, sample sizes, range in tree sizes, and many other procedural and reporting anomalies used by the different investigators.

The tables in this report were developed from regression equations found in the literature that contained the two basic volume-measuring parameters of a tree; namely, diameter at breast height (d.b.h.) and total tree height. If an equation did not contain these two parameters, it was excluded from this collection. This was done for the sake of uniformity, and to be able to compare different species on an equivalent basis or two different tables generated for a single species from different geographical locations. Because of these limitations placed on the selections, a rather small number of equations were found in the literature that could be incorporated in this listing.

Five table types identifying wood by green weight:

@ Whole tree--wood, bark, and foliage.

@ Whole tree--wood, and bark (no foliage).

e Whole tree--wood only (no bark or foliage).

@ Main steml/--(to a 4-inch top) wood and bark.

1/ Main-stem weight tables are to a 4-

inch top unless otherwise footnoted in the table. All tables are not always available for each species.

e Main stem--(to a 4-inch top) wood only (no bark).

The tables are first segregated into the two major wood categories-- hardwoods and softwoods, with each subdivided into five categories as indicated above. Under each of the table types, species are arranged alphabetically by scientific name. If a single species has more than one table of the same type, then the tables within a species are arranged alphabetically by State or region. An index to the hardwood and softwood tables by species can be found at the

end of the report.

"Whole tree" in this report is defined as all wood, bark, and foliage above ground, excluding stump. Tree d.b.h. is listed by l-inch classes and tree height by 10-foot classes. Boxed-in areas indicate range of data used to develop the equation used.

The equations used to generate the respective tables are listed at the

base of the tables together with some statistical information regarding the average, maximum, and minimum values for the variables used in the

equation. Some of the equations listed are for terms in metric units ard result in metric answers that will be unlike those in the table, which are in pounds. To convert the pound values into kilograms, divide the values in the table by 2.2

Some tables were developed from a dry-weight equation and a moisture content factor applied to develop a green weight table. This procedure was used in the case of some of the western species where few green-weight equations were available. These tables reveal that in some cases the weight of the same species varies from one region to another. Although this is not always the case, the tables should be used within the region in which they were developed if one has a choice of tables to select from in order to be assured of better precision.
