2006 GUIDE Upland Game Bird Habitat Enhancement and Pheasant Release Projects Turn in Poachers: 1-800-TIP-MONT (847-6668) July 20, 2006 Dear Hunter, Welcome to Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks Upland Game Bird Habitat Enhancement Program (UGBHE). This program was initiated to enhance habitat to increase upland game bird numbers. The habitat enhancement projects Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) undertake are mainly with private landowners. Some projects, however, have been completed on state and federal lands. ACCESS All projects require "reasonable" access for upland game bird hunting. Because of the different sizes of habitat enhancement projects, and the benefits provided to upland birds, the landowner determines the levels of hunter access. The enclosed maps show approximate upland game bird habitat project locations and each is designated by a symbol. Triangles designate habitat enhancement projects and plus signs are pheasant release sites. Each symbol contains a number or letter. By looking up the number or letter in the table for the FWP Region, designated at the top of the map, hunters can determine the name of the landowner for that project. It is the hunters responsibility to contact the landowner for permission to hunt. LANDOWNER PERMISSION IS REQUIRED BEFORE HUNTING OR ENTERING ANY PRIVATE LAND PROJECT. BLOCK MANAGEMENT In addition to the UGBHE program, FWP's Block Management Program also provides for hunter access to private lands. For some upland game bird projects, public hunting access is managed through the Block Management Program. Hunters are encouraged to contact the appropriate FWP Regional office to obtain Block Management Program Materials. A map of the FWP regions, and phone numbers for each office, is provided on the last page of this tabloid. OTHER ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES Additional upland game bird hunting access may be available on more than 32 million acres of federal, tribal and state lands within Montana, many of which offer upland game bird hunting opportunities. Information on FWP lands can be obtained from regional offices. A "Directory of Montana Maps," lists addresses and phone numbers for state and federal agencies and is available at all FWP offices or by calling the FWP Helena Headquarters at 406- 444-2535. Most federal agency offices have maps available that display the locations of federal and tribal lands. Hunters must contact the appropriate tribe for information on hunting on tribal lands. Enjoy the fall season and your Montana hunting experience. Please be respectful to the lands you hunt, report any rule violations you may see (1-800-TIP-MONT) and remember to thank the landowners who grant you access to their property. Happy hunting! Sincerely, '^f-g^y^ M. Jeff Hagener Director HUNTERS! Are YOU an Endangered Species? Noxious weeds threaten Montana's hunting heritage!! WHAT CAN YOU DO? ♦ Learn to identify noxious weeds; ♦Avoid parking, walking or driving in weeds; ♦Wash vehicles before and after hunting trips; ♦ Keep clothing, equipment & animals weed-free. Tlie natural enemies of these plants - diseases and insects - that normally keep these weeds under control in their native homeland didn't make the trip over. Due to the lack of natural controls, combined with aggressive growing characteristics, controlling noxious weeds is very difficult once they've gained a foothold. In Montana, noxious weeds are affecting rangelands and in some cases, reducing the quality and quantity of wildlife habitat. Every year (he costs associated with controlling weeds in Montana increases for private landowners, towns state and federal agencies. HOW CAN HUNTERS HELP? ^ Learn to identify the types of noxious weeds. Helpful information is available at county weed and extension offices. M Thoroughly wash your vehicle, especially the underside, before going afield. •4 Avoid soil disturbance by traveling only on established roads and trails. < Hunters using packstock in the hills should use only cenijkd, weed-seed free hay. County extension offices can provide a list of local producers. * Avoid driving through weed patches and limit your use of weed-infested areas. ■^-Notify private, state or federal landowners if you encounter weeds on their property. * NOXIOUS WEEDS ARE EVERYBODY'S PROBLEM.
