NEWSLETTER of the Wisconsin Entomological Society Volume 17, Number 3 Les Ferge, Editor October 1990 ANNUAL MEETING TO BE HELD NOVEMBER 10 IN MADISON The Annual Meeting of the Wisconsin Entomological Society will be held on Saturday, November 10, in room 150 Russell Labs on the University of Wisconsin Madison campus. Russell Labs is located at the corner of Babcock and Linden Drives, and parking is available behind the building, in the lot entered from Observatory Drive. The program will feature our annual Photo Salon. Any members having slides of entomological subjects are encouraged to participate. Each entrant may submit up to five slides. The slides will be judged by the audience, whose votes will be compiled to select the winning entry. The winner's name is added to the William E. Sieker Memorial Plaque, and an 8 x 10 print of the first place slide is added to the photo display located in the Entomology Department office and is also awarded to the photographer. Participants are asked to bring in their slides a bit earlier if possible, to allow sufficient time to set up the program. In addition, two or three short talks are scheduled, and there should be some time also for people to chat informally. Following the meeting, which will be over between 4:00 and 5:00, we are planning an informal dinner at a local restaurant for those who are interested. Also on the agenda is the election of officers for 1991. We particularly need nominees or volunteers for the office of President, as Phil Pellitteri will not be able to continue in that capacity. 1991 DUES NOTICE Enclosed in this Newsletter is your dues envelope for 1991. Your prompt attention will be most appreciated. Please note that dues are to be sent directly to the Treasurer, Bob Borth, 6926 N. Belmont Lane, Fox Point, WI 53217. Please check the membership list appearing in this issue, and report any errors or address changes when you send in your dues. New members joining in the latter part of 1990 are indicated with an asterisk on the membership list, and will have their dues payment and membership effective for 1991. The Newsletter of the Wisconsin Entomological Society is published three times a year, at irregular intervals. It is provided to encourage and facilitate the exchange of information by the membership, and to keep the members informed of the activities of the organization. Members are strongly encouraged to contribute items for inclusion in the Newsletter. Please send all news items, notes, new or interesting insect records, season summaries, research requests etc. to the editor: Les Ferge, 7119 Hubbard Avenue Middleton, WI 53562. ’ PRESIDENT'S NOTES Phil Pellitteri It is that time of year, when I am forced by the news media to make my "woolly bear winter prediction" and to sit back and ponder the entomological happenings of the past season. As always, it has been an interesting year. I did get to experience my first 17 year cicada emergence in Wisconsin. I had a chance to get down to Lake Geneva during the end of June, and saw and heard the closest thing to a good science fiction movie I have experienced. Activity peaked at around 25 emergence holes per square foot, and the constant sound on a sunny day was something I will never forget. There was no activity in Madison or Milwaukee, but we did get reports from Richland County, Wyalusing State Park in Grant County, and small pockets near Janesville, Evansville, Mazomanie and Dodgeville. The heavy rains brought out the most impressive mosquito counts in some time. Light trap catches in Madison averaged up to 900 per trap, with anything over 400 considered a very bad flight. Reports out of Chicago made 1990 the worst year since 1978. Most of the activity was from Aedes vexans . It seemed to be a good year for Sphinx moths. I saw at least seven different species come into the lab, and also received numerous calls on larvae chewing on people's grapes. I am sure you all noticed the early flight of Red Admirals and how their populations remained high for most of the summer . We have added two counties to the distribution of the deer tick ( Ixodes dammini ) - Ozaukee and Milwaukee. I also found one female buried behind my knee this June, which resulted in antibiotic therapy for me. I could have prevented all of that if I had only listened to my own advice and done a tick check the day we were out collecting ticks for the Department. The wet fall brought all kinds of fungus beetles, grain mites, psocids and other mold and mildew feeders into people's homes. The German yellowjackets didn't become pesky until early September, but they have certainly made their presence known since then. Earwigs, pear slugs, and ants in general were very numerous during the warmer months. As usual, I have been praying for a hard freeze since September 1. As for the wooly bears, they tell me it will be a mild winter. Now is the time to submit candidates for 1991 W. E. S. officers. I will not be continuing as President. My family and work commitments have prevented me from giving the Society as much time as it deserves, and so it is time for a change. We need new people! I will be willing to help as much as I can, but I will not serve as President after the November meeting. Now is the time to drop me your suggestions for any of the four positions: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. You may nominate yourself. If you want the Wisconsin Entomological Society to continue, we must have new officers. Write c/o University of Wisconsin, Dept, of Entomology, Madison, WI 53706 or phone (608) 262-6510. E. S. Newsletter. Things to report include rare or unusual species occurring in your area, unusually early or late occurrences, unusual abundance or scarcity, rearing/host plant data, flowers utilized by adults, or any other observations of interest. Please indicate locality by county and give the date of capture or observation. Also note if voucher specimens were retained, or if records are based on photos or sightings. Specimens whose identities are uncertain may be brought to the November meeting for verification, or arrangements to view specimens or photos at another time may be made individually. Please list butterflies in the order they appear in the Checklist of Wisconsin Butterflies included in the May 1990 Newsletter, and send reports before January 5 to: Les Ferge, 7119 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton, WI 53562. NEWS AND NOTES Although the weather outlook for the weekend of the W. E. S. field trip to the Black River State Forest on August 4-5 was not good at all, those that risked it were rewarded with one of the few decent weekends there were this season. Conditions for moth collecting were good early on Friday night, but a sudden heavy thunderstorm brought the collecting to an early end. It cleared up early Saturday morning, and stayed nice until Sunday afternoon, when increasing clouds slowed down insect activity. The survey work for the Earner Blue butterfly ( Lycaeides melissa samuelis ) was successful, in that populations were observed at two sites that weekend, and at a third a few days later. Other butterflies seen were the Pink-edged sulfur ( Colias interior), Edward's Hairstreak ( Satyrium edwardsii ), and Banded/Red-Spotted Purple intergrades ( Basilarchia arthemis arthemis x arthemis astyanax ) . Despite less than ideal conditions for moth collecting on Saturday night, an unexpected find was made: several specimens of the Pawpaw Sphinx ( Dolba hyloeus ) were found nectar ing at dusk on Bouncing Bet flowers. Although the blacklights were set up directly adjacent to the flower patch, none of the hyloeus were attracted to them. The common name of this moth reflects its choice of host in the southern part of its range. Host plant records in the literature suggest that our population possibly feeds on Black Alder ( Ilex verticillata) or Sweet fern ( Myrica asplenifolia ) . The results of the Wisconsin Earner Blue survey, coordinated by Cathy Bleser of the DNR's Bureau of Endangered Resources, have recently been compiled, totaling 34 sites in 12 counties. However, most of these records represent small numbers of individuals in small, isolated localities, whose long-term existence is by no means secure. Also, Earner Blues were not found in a number of areas where they were previously known to occur, particularly roadsides and power line rights-of-way, which apparently have suffered the loss of this and other species due to excessive mowing and possible herbicide applications. On a positive note, several sites having significant populations were located on State and Federal lands, whose managers have expressed an interest in taking the necessary steps to preserve the Earner Blue and the remnants of the entire barrens community, essential to its survival, as well as the survival of many other barrens-associated species.
