WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:05.000 Hello there, buckaroos. This is Ken Maynard at the Diamond Cay about to spin another yarn of the old west. 00:05.000 --> 00:11.400 And that was Tarzan, 00:11.400 --> 00:15.760 poking his head in the tack room to say hello. You know folks, it seems 00:15.760 --> 00:19.600 I'm always being asked how it is that there's so much gold buried around everywhere. 00:19.600 --> 00:22.800 It just doesn't seem to them that there's that much to bury. 00:22.800 --> 00:26.880 One thing you've got to remember, buckaroos, and that is that times are very different from 00:26.880 --> 00:27.920 what they used to be. 00:27.920 --> 00:30.960 We've got banks and safe places to keep our money now, 00:30.960 --> 00:35.280 those who have any of it to keep. But back in the old days, that is way back, 00:35.280 --> 00:40.240 there were no such things. Why time was when a cow and a calf were legal tender for 00:40.240 --> 00:41.040 ten dollars, 00:41.040 --> 00:45.040 and folks didn't have to use money then as they do now either. It was more of a 00:45.040 --> 00:46.000 barter system. 00:46.000 --> 00:49.680 Of course the big range of owners needed money for buying cattle and things, but 00:49.680 --> 00:52.000 they never liked having any more around than needed. 00:52.000 --> 00:56.240 For carting around all that gold and silver was a heavy proposition sometimes. 00:56.240 --> 01:00.240 Why a thousand dollars in silver weighed sixty two and a half pounds, 01:00.240 --> 01:04.160 you can see buckaroos why the invention of the check saved people a lot of round 01:04.160 --> 01:05.520 shoulders and baggy pants. 01:05.520 --> 01:09.360 That's why in the old days those who had the money got in the habit of 01:09.360 --> 01:10.000 burying it, 01:10.000 --> 01:13.360 so it would be safe. As long as they were the only ones 01:13.360 --> 01:17.280 that knew where it was, it was safe. And in a sense just like being in the bank, 01:17.280 --> 01:21.920 a private bank of their own. Now of course losing the combination of a safe is bad 01:21.920 --> 01:22.320 enough, 01:22.320 --> 01:25.440 but losing track of where you buried your money is worse. 01:25.440 --> 01:29.440 And that's what my story is about. I'll tell you more in just a moment. 01:29.440 --> 01:32.400 From the tack room of Ken Maynard's Diamond Cay Ranch we're bringing you 01:32.400 --> 01:33.840 stories of adventure, 01:33.840 --> 01:37.520 stories of circus life, fascinating transcribed tales of the old west where 01:37.520 --> 01:39.840 cowboys still follow the cattle trails, 01:39.840 --> 01:43.600 stories of rodeos and parades, colorful legends of the red man, 01:43.600 --> 01:48.480 hidden gold and buried treasure. The exciting tales from the Diamond Cay are 01:48.480 --> 01:51.600 told by Hollywood's champion of western stars, 01:51.600 --> 01:55.520 internationally famous Ken Maynard. Now while Ken's getting ready to spin his 01:55.520 --> 01:57.200 newest Wild West yarn, 01:57.200 --> 02:00.640 here's something to think about, buckaroos. Do you know what every 02:00.640 --> 02:02.880 cowboy's favorite pastime is? 02:02.880 --> 02:06.240 Well after the chores are done, whether it's watering the horses or pitching hay 02:06.240 --> 02:07.520 or rounding up the cattle, 02:07.520 --> 02:11.440 the boys just kind of drift together to chat a bit. And the 02:11.440 --> 02:14.400 first thing you know one of them is telling a story. 02:14.400 --> 02:18.400 Cowboys just love a good story and that's why we think you'll get a big kick 02:18.400 --> 02:21.840 out of having a set of real western stories to hear 02:21.840 --> 02:26.240 anytime you have your chores done. I'm talking about the exciting 02:26.240 --> 02:29.280 record album of Ken Maynard Wild West stories. 02:29.280 --> 02:34.000 It's a beautiful album all in color with two of Ken's favorite stories inside 02:34.000 --> 02:37.120 on two big eight inch unbreakable records 02:37.120 --> 02:40.160 with pictures of Ken and Tarzan right on the records. 02:40.160 --> 02:43.760 And best of all these records are personalized. 02:43.760 --> 02:47.920 They're made just for you and with a personal message from Ken to you 02:47.920 --> 02:51.520 right on the record. Yes Ken will call you by name whatever 02:58.320 --> 03:02.800 your name is and he'll tell you two complete exciting stories. Now these records are standard 78 rpm 03:15.920 --> 03:19.600 speed for the regular kind of record player that everybody's been using for 03:19.600 --> 03:23.680 years. And say you'll play your records over 03:23.680 --> 03:30.480 and over again. So send right away. Now here's Ken. 03:30.480 --> 03:34.080 Down in south Texas was an old codger by the name of Talbert. 03:34.080 --> 03:37.840 He was a stingy as they come if we're to believe all they say about him. 03:37.840 --> 03:41.120 They used to say if old Talbert was out in the rain starving and was to run 03:41.120 --> 03:45.040 across the stray he bram the maverick instead of cutting it up for a beef steak. 03:45.040 --> 03:48.720 And he was just as tough on his ranch hands as he was on himself. 03:48.720 --> 03:52.320 Folks could always tell Talbert men they were so thin. 03:52.320 --> 03:56.160 Now sugar molasses were mighty cheap in those days but old Talbert never bought 03:56.160 --> 03:58.400 any. He used to feed himself and his men on 03:58.400 --> 04:02.400 the slimmest pickings you ever heard of. And he used to save fire any cook who 04:02.400 --> 04:05.680 didn't harden up the bread before feeding to the boys so they wouldn't eat so 04:05.680 --> 04:08.160 much. While there were more broken teeth among 04:08.160 --> 04:12.480 Talbert's men than well that's another way you could tell them. By their missing 04:12.480 --> 04:16.160 molars that is. Being stingy I suppose is one way of saving 04:16.160 --> 04:20.240 money but it's sure not much fun huh Tarzan? 04:20.240 --> 04:24.240 And it's a funny thing these fellows who spend all their lives making and saving 04:24.240 --> 04:27.680 money generally leave it to someone else to have a good time with. 04:27.680 --> 04:31.280 Well Talbert made money all right how much no one rightly knew 04:31.280 --> 04:35.520 but when he died there wasn't a cent to be found. Folks knew the money had to be 04:35.520 --> 04:37.920 somewhere because if it had been stolen old 04:37.920 --> 04:41.040 Talbert would have worked his way out of his grave to take after the gilly critter 04:41.040 --> 04:44.640 and get his money back. Talbert was that kind of a man but the 04:44.640 --> 04:47.200 general feeling was that he had buried it somewhere. 04:47.200 --> 04:50.400 You remember me telling you about there not being any banks available in those 04:50.400 --> 04:52.960 days? One of the most popular places to bury 04:52.960 --> 04:56.240 money was in post holes. They were easy to get at and there was 04:56.240 --> 04:59.520 always a natural marker there to tell you where the goal was. 04:59.520 --> 05:03.680 That is if you could remember the right post hole. I can remember hearing about 05:03.680 --> 05:07.120 one fellow who did just that. Buried his money one night then couldn't 05:07.120 --> 05:10.800 remember which post he buried it under. He dug up every large post on the 05:10.800 --> 05:13.680 range and of course he found the money under the last one. 05:13.680 --> 05:17.200 And with all those posts dug up and the money he'd recovered 05:17.200 --> 05:21.600 not being enough to replace them he just went out of the cattle business. 05:21.600 --> 05:25.360 But I'll get on with the story of old Talbert in just a minute. First I want 05:25.360 --> 05:29.600 you to hear a word about something I've become mightily interested in. Well 05:29.600 --> 05:32.480 folks you'll just have to excuse me for my story for a minute 05:32.480 --> 05:35.680 because I want to sit back and get comfortable and tell you about another 05:35.680 --> 05:39.040 favorite subject of mine. Speaking of comfort you know if a man 05:39.040 --> 05:42.480 doesn't feel comfortable he just can't do his best at work or 05:42.480 --> 05:45.360 play. And just for your information I feel my 05:45.360 --> 05:49.200 best when I'm dressed comfortably. And you know my favorite outfit whether 05:49.200 --> 05:52.960 I'm working or just loafing around is my K-shirt and a pair of jeans. 05:52.960 --> 05:56.560 You'd be surprised how many buckaroos are agreeing with me. Kids all across the 05:56.560 --> 05:59.600 country are writing in asking me for a K-shirt like mine. 05:59.600 --> 06:03.760 I've told you about it before. It's a comfortable cotton shirt made like a T-shirt 06:03.760 --> 06:07.360 in the color of desert sand with my own Diamond K-branding bright 06:07.360 --> 06:11.360 red on the front and targing on me looking right at you. 06:11.360 --> 06:14.960 If you want to join the fellas and girls that are wearing my own private K-shirt 06:14.960 --> 06:18.480 all you've got to do is send me your name and address. Tell me what size you 06:18.480 --> 06:22.080 wear. Size is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12. 06:22.080 --> 06:25.920 And then close a one dollar bill for the fellow that makes them. Pretty fancy shirt 06:25.920 --> 06:28.640 for just a dollar. You'll get a lot of wear out of your 06:28.640 --> 06:33.120 K-shirt too. Cause it's fine quality cotton and the blazing colors are put on by 06:33.120 --> 06:37.120 special hand screen process. So send a date. Be sure to send your 06:37.120 --> 06:41.520 name and address and your size to K-shirt in care of this station and slip in that 06:41.520 --> 06:44.720 one dollar bill. Your shirt will be sent postage prepaid 06:44.720 --> 06:48.800 from Hollywood. Now back to the story. You remember me 06:48.800 --> 06:52.240 telling you about that old skinned flint Talbert dying and neglecting very 06:52.240 --> 06:55.200 important item telling where his fortune was buried? 06:55.200 --> 06:58.880 Well the next fellow to get hold of the ranch was a man named Barry. 06:58.880 --> 07:02.400 He was an easygoing fella just the opposite of Talbert. 07:02.400 --> 07:06.320 He fed his men well and liked to laugh and joke with him and folks used to say 07:06.320 --> 07:10.080 that the Barry men were as fat as Talbert's were lean. 07:10.080 --> 07:13.680 Well Barry didn't get out of the range much himself. He liked to hang around the 07:13.680 --> 07:17.200 ranch house giving orders and supervising small jobs. 07:17.200 --> 07:21.520 He had a bunch of Mexicans working for him and used to keep them mighty busy. 07:21.520 --> 07:25.280 He set one of them to replacing all the old posts near the ranch house. 07:25.280 --> 07:29.840 Well it was a hot day, a mighty hot one, when the Mexicans started the job. 07:29.840 --> 07:34.160 Now post hole digging is no easy pickings. The ground around the ranch gets pounded 07:34.160 --> 07:37.760 down pretty hard and most of the time that Mexican was slaving away with a 07:37.760 --> 07:40.880 crowbar breaking up the hard dirt and loosening up the rocks. 07:40.880 --> 07:44.640 As I said it was a hot day and the sweat was just pouring down his leathery old 07:44.640 --> 07:47.600 face and the work was slowing up considerable. 07:47.600 --> 07:51.360 First post hole wasn't so bad but the second one almost killed him. 07:51.360 --> 07:55.200 When he started the third he really began to think of siesta time 07:55.200 --> 07:59.440 which incidentally wasn't too far off. Maybe that gave him a little extra 07:59.440 --> 08:02.720 strength because he replunged that crowbar down into the ground with a 08:02.720 --> 08:06.000 mighty thrust but it bounced right back and almost made him look like one of 08:06.000 --> 08:10.080 Talbert's hired hands with a broken tooth that is. Well that 08:10.080 --> 08:13.120 crowbar was pretty hefty. When it did the same thing again 08:13.120 --> 08:17.520 he was through for the day. Boss Manberry happened by just about that time and 08:17.520 --> 08:20.080 when the Mexican explained what had happened 08:20.080 --> 08:24.480 he didn't seem to mind too much. Told the Mexican he'd quit the job if he liked 08:24.480 --> 08:28.000 and sent him out rounding up the remutative, the horses that is. 08:28.000 --> 08:31.520 Now it seemed very strange to the Mexicans seeing that they just got through 08:31.520 --> 08:34.400 rounding up the horses, had picked out the ones they wanted and 08:34.400 --> 08:38.080 set the others loose again. But Berry hustled him off anyway and then 08:38.080 --> 08:41.440 the boss man waited until all the others hanging around the ranch house were deep 08:41.440 --> 08:45.360 in their respective siestas. Then Berry slipped off his spurs which 08:45.360 --> 08:49.200 was a rather strange thing to do. They made a right cheery sound and then 08:49.200 --> 08:53.120 he went back to the third post hole. Instead of working on the hole itself he 08:53.120 --> 08:56.960 began to dig around it making the hole much bigger than you'd ever need for a 08:56.960 --> 09:01.040 post. And when he got down about the depth of the crowbar 09:01.040 --> 09:05.200 he struck something that didn't seem to surprise him but it surely made him smile. 09:05.200 --> 09:08.400 Then he started to dig with his hands and the first thing he came up with was a 09:08.400 --> 09:12.400 stack of gold pieces, 18 high, held together by something that had 09:12.400 --> 09:16.160 mostly rusted away. But after that he ran in spongy dirt and 09:16.160 --> 09:20.240 gave up when he didn't find any more gold. Of course he was happy to get the money 09:20.240 --> 09:23.200 but it certainly didn't pay him for all the work he'd done. 09:23.200 --> 09:27.840 You remember it was a hot day. Well Berry had plenty to say about old Hallbert 09:27.840 --> 09:31.120 as he went back to the ranch house because as you've guessed Berry thought 09:31.120 --> 09:34.240 he was going to find all the money old Hallbert was supposed to have buried 09:34.240 --> 09:37.440 somewhere. Well for days Berry was the bad temper and 09:37.440 --> 09:40.480 everybody gave him a wide berth. They didn't know what had happened down at 09:40.480 --> 09:43.680 that post hole. Now Buckaroo from Berry was more like 09:43.680 --> 09:47.360 himself again and got to thinking about it the more important those 18 pieces of 09:47.360 --> 09:50.720 gold became. Especially they're being rusted together 09:50.720 --> 09:54.000 like that. It wasn't like anybody to bury money that way. 09:54.000 --> 09:58.400 Sure it might be in a sack or a pot or a box but not the way he found it. 09:58.400 --> 10:02.240 And then he began puzzling about the spongy dirt that had stopped him and 10:02.240 --> 10:05.040 right then and there he decided to have another look. 10:05.040 --> 10:08.880 Of course by that time the Mexican had the hole all filled in again and Berry 10:08.880 --> 10:12.240 had to start from scratch. When he got down to that spongy soil 10:12.240 --> 10:14.960 again he kept going and this time it paid off. 10:14.960 --> 10:18.640 For his spade ran into the most delightful jingle an old treasure hunter 10:18.640 --> 10:23.040 would ever want to hear. You see Buckaroos the combined diggings 10:23.040 --> 10:26.080 of the Mexican and Berry had caused the original chest that 10:26.080 --> 10:30.160 Talbert had buried to break away from the place it was wedged and to sink out of 10:30.160 --> 10:34.160 sight in the spongy soil. Leaving those 18 pieces behind is a 10:34.160 --> 10:37.840 sort of a teaser. The chest itself had mostly rusted away 10:37.840 --> 10:40.880 and that's what held those 18 coins together. 10:40.880 --> 10:46.320 Well Berry banked the $75,000 he found. Yes he put it in a much safer place maybe 10:46.320 --> 10:50.080 than where he found it but you can feel certain that he was happy they didn't 10:50.080 --> 10:54.400 have places like safes in the early days otherwise he never would have had the 10:54.400 --> 11:00.000 legal right to break into Talbert's bank. Gosh Ken that was really an exciting 11:00.000 --> 11:03.920 story and you know when you finish a story I 11:03.920 --> 11:08.720 just keep wishing there was more because I really go for a good western story 11:08.720 --> 11:13.200 especially one about buried gold and I'll bet you young buckaroos listening 11:13.200 --> 11:16.400 feel a lot like I do.
