Ohio Beetles Bulletin Occasional Publication of the Ohio Coleopterists Edited By: Ken Karns Species@columbus.rr.com Issue Number: 16 May 2015 CEROPHYTIDAE (Rare Click Beetle) Cerophytum pulsator (Haldeman) The Ohio Beetles Bulletin (OBB) was developed to provide the Ohio Coleopterists membership a means of communication in conjunction with the Ohio Coleopterists Newsletter. It is hoped the OBB will provide an informative and enjoyable means of sharing information on the fascinating world of Beetles. “When we have experienced the atavistic joy of collecting in the open air and the manipulative pleasure of setting and mounting our chosen beetles there follows the refined intellectual delight of naming them with precision”. Quote by G.B. Walsh taken from the first edition of the Coleopterists Handbook. W.J.B. Crotch, General Editor London, December 1953. OHIO COLEOPTERISTS Field Trip SHAWNEE STATE PARK & STATE FOREST JUNE 12-14, 2015 The OC will be descending upon Shawnee State Park and Forest for a camping and collecting trip June 12-14, 2015. Shawnee is situated in the SW corner of Scioto County. I have reserved campsite number 72 for both Friday and Saturday nights with reservations for 6 people. I will be arriving at the site hopefully by 6:00 pm Friday. I will set-up my pop-up camper as the base camp which sleeps 5-6. A couple of tents can also be set-up on site. Go to Shawnee State Park on Goggle and pull up a site map of the campground. Google Earth gives you some idea of the location as well. We can discuss collecting strategy Friday night over a cold beer or Saturday morning over a hot cup of coffee, for those that can’t make it Friday. This site has electric. Please RSVP to Ken Karns if you plan to attend. Sounds like a blast to me.. Date: Time: Place: Directions: Lodging: Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June14. We used Ken’s mercury vapor light and a black light set over a white sheet on the deck. In the course of the night (up to 10:30 PM) we collected a few beetles including a single specimen of the seldom collected Cerambycidae, Tessaropa tenuipes (Haldeman, 1846). This is a new beetle for Ken and L He graciously let me keep it! In my defense, it was a communal sheet and I did ask if I could have it. I had no idea what it was then, but Ken e-mailed me to say it was probably Tessaropa tenuipes. I mounted the specimen and agreed that it is indeed Tessaropa tenuipes. I am grateful for being able to collect at such a wonderful place full of such a large variety of beetle species! Thanks again to Ken and Cathy Karns for their hospitality. This species flight period is April and May and the host plants are Fagus grandifolia, Carya, Juglans nigra, Quercus, Castanea dentate, Cercis canadensis and Prunus. This information is from E. Gorton Linsley’s The Cerambycidae Of North America. Steven W. Lingafelter’s Illustrated Key to the Longhorned Woodboring Beetles of the Eastern United States says that it is an uncommon beetle. Juglans nigra Specimen and Photo: Ken Karns New Host and Collection Record for the Cerambycidae: Grammoptera exigua (Newman) By: Ken Karns I decided to cage up some dead branches of Black Walnut ( Juglans nigra) that occur near my home in Fairfield County. This material was caged during late February 2015, and upon checking the cages for emerging beetles, a series of 6 specimens of the small Lepturinae; Grammoptera exigua (Newman) were collected 13-May-2015. This is the first time I have collected this species. In their work: The Cerambycidae of North America. Part VI. No.2. Taxonomy and Classification of the Subfamily Lepturinae (1976) Lindsley and Chemsak list the only host records for Grammoptera exigua as Populus and Tilia (Basswoods) species. Yanega (1996) follows suit with host records as “dead branches of poplar and Linden”. Lingafelter (2007) in his Illustrated Key to the Longhorned Woodboring Beetles of the Eastern United States does not include G. exigua in species accounts for the Eastern US. Four (4) New Ohio State Record Beetle Species (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Tachyporinae) By: Ken Karns I and co-author and fellow OC member Mark Behrendt recently published accounts of 4 species of Staphylinidae of the genus Lordithon Thomson, not previously recorded from Ohio: Lordithon axillaris (Gravenhorst) Lordithon quaesitor (Horn) Lordithon thoracicus venustus (Melsheimer) Lordithon facilis (Casey) All specimens are in the collection of the author and detailed accounts can be reviewed in Volume 69, No. 1 March 2015 issue of The Coleopterists Bulletin.
