Newsletter of the Colorado Native Plant Society . . dedicated to the appreciation and conservation of the Colorado native flora” Volume 27 Number 3 ANNUAL MEETING EDITION August 2003 WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE PLAINS The 2003 Annual Meeting will focus on the narrow band along the Front Range at the intersection of the lower montane and prairie ecosystems that includes the lower foothills, hogback and western edge of the prairie. This transition zone contains a mixture of mountain and prairie plant communities, including ^relict xeric tallgrass prairie and other uncommon com- munities. Rare plants and animal species, such as Preble's meadow jumping mouse and American cur- rant, are found within this narrow band. Humans have heavily impacted this transition zone by suppressing fire and changing the characteristics of the forest, pro- moting weeds, and changing large portions of the prairie to urban landscaped lawns. ANNUAL MEETING SILENT AUCTION There will be a silent auction this year at the Annual Meeting, starting at 10:00 a.m. The Annual Meeting committee is soliciting donations for the auction as well as volunteers to help with set up and monitoring the auction during breaks. The Board of Directors requests that the donations be related to native plants. Suggestions for donations include the following: Books - new, old, out of print, signed by author, etc. Posters Seeds for wildflowers and other native plants ^Propagated or donated native plants Pictures - preferably in a mat or framed Botanical native art - preferably in a mat or framed Dried flowers Dried flower arrangements Other art using dried flowers Jewelry Clothing Any of the above that touches on preservation and con- servation. If you have a suggestion for anything else, please call Pat Ploegsma at 303-229-3007. Donations from busi- nesses or organizations are welcome. Intent to donate should be sent to Pat Ploegsma no later than the end of August. Intent can be communicated via email and should include the item, name of the donor, suggested minimum bid and some comments or history of the item. Field Trip Report Fifth Annual Weed Survey Backpack, 2002 Pat Butler — ^ ^ Once again last year, seven weedwackers representing the Native Plant Society, the Colorado Mountain Club, and the U.S. Forest Service backpacked into the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area along Middle St. Vrain Creek on August 24, 2002 to survey and pull sev- eral infestations of Canada Thistle {Brea arvensis, Asteraceae) that we had been tracking over the previous 4 years and one veiy high altitude population of yellow toadflax {Linaria vulgaris^ Scrophulariaceae ). We hiked five miles and set up camp west of the junction with the Red Deer Lake trail, observing on the way two of our native cirsiurhs (C. centaureae and C eatonii) and a small population of tiny lanceleaf moonwort (Botiychium lauceo- latum, Ophioglossaceae). On a leisurely hike to Lake Gibraltar, despite the drought, a number of late summer flowers were still blooming, including arctic and bottle gentian {Pnemnonanthe affi- nis and Genfianodes algida, Gentianaceae) yellow monkey flower {Mimiilus floriimdus, Scrophulareacea), alpine avens {Acomastylis rossi, Rosaceae), and ground-pine {Lycopodium annotiniim, Lycopodiaceae). Fading fast were Senecio triaugidaris and S. spartiodes (Asteraceae) and cow parsnip {Heracleiim sphondyli- um, ssp montanum, Apiaceae). We pulled toadflax and Canada thistle on our way back to camp. Sunday morning we hiked out, pulling thistle near our campsite and'nt the other locations down the trail and meeting up with tw other CoNPS members and two more CMC member. Perhaps to the drought (but also, we hope, to our previous efforts), we observed that the infestations were not as populous as in past years. Unfortunately, we did find another small stand of thistle that we had not seen before, making a total of 7 we'll be working on in August, 2003. Colorado's Wild Plants and Ecosystems Denver Botanic Gardens Learn about the diversity of Colorado's native and rare plants, while discovering how physical environment, time, plants, and ani- mals (including man) interact to define these ecosystems. In addi- tion to the major plant communities, you will learn the tools for field identification of native plants and basic soil types. The class will also include a visit to the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium at Denver Botanic Gardens to learn about accepted practices of col- lecting and preserving the defining characteristics of plants and a field trip to practice field identification in a variety of ecosystems.
