I I. CATALOGUE OF THE COLLECTION OF MAMMALIA and BIRDS IN THE MUSEUM OF THE ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT, AT FORT PITT, CHATHAM. PRINTED BY JAMES BURRILL, HIGH-STREET. MDCCCXXXVUI. Digitized by^hef Internet Archive in 201 5_J https://archive.org/details/b24758991 ADVERTISEMENT. The Museum of Natural History, as a distinct collection, may be said to have been formed in 1829, when the objects peculiarly belonging to it were separated from the Ana- tomical Collections. Twenty-three years ago the present Director-General of the Army Medical Department, on coming to office, called the attention of Medical Officers in all quarters of the globe where British Troops are stationed to Natural His- tory, and pointed out the advantages of collecting the pro- ductions of each country. Such collections accordingly were gradually made ; parts of them were sent to Chatham, and thus the foundation of the Museum was laid. As at present constituted the Museum of Natural His- tory consists of four great Divisions, including specimens, 1st. of Zoology; 2nd. of Mineralogy and Geology; 3rd. of Botany; and 4th. of Comparative Anatomy. The following is a numerical Return of the objects belonging to each : — 1st. Zoology 9386 Specimens. 2nd. Mineralogy and Geology 5749 do. 3rd. Botany 7966 do. 4th. Comparative Anatomy - 754 do. iv ADVERTISEMENT. The Committee of Medical Officers under whose super- intendancc this Museum as well as that of Patholo- gical and Natural Anatomy have been placed by the Director-General, in adverting to its progress, have great pleasure in referring to the labours of those Gentlemen doing duty at Fort Pitt, who have afforded their assistance in arranging systematically some of the more important branches of it; particularly the late Mr. Robert Jameson, prematurely lost to the service and to science, his brother Mr. Laurence Jameson, and above all Mr. Burton. Mr. Robert Jameson, whilst he had charge of the Natural History collections in the year 1833, commenced a Cata- logue of the first three classes of the Vertcbrata and of the Minerals. Mr. Laurence Jameson, during the last year, has made considerable progress in the classification of the Shells, Fossils and Geological specimens. Rut to Mr. Burton the greatest oljligations are owing. Since the com- mencement of the Museum it has been almost constantly under his immediate care : by him, the majority of the species of Mammalia, Birds, Reptiles and Fishes have been determined, and the arrangements connected with tlieir classification and cataloguing effected. The present Catalogue, including the Mammalia and Birds, is mainly the result of his labours. It is printed for circulation for the double purpose of making known to the Department and to Naturalists our possessions and our wants ; with the twofold hope of increasing the usefulness of the Museum and of promoting its augmentation. The species of which there are duplicates are marked by an Asterisk. These may be considered as offered for exchange, either with other Museums or with private collectors disposed to give in return specimens of equal value. All the collections in the Natural History Museum have ADVERTISEMENT, V been formed by donations : not a single specimen has been purchased. Mr. Burton has annexed to his preface of this Catalogue a list of the Donors, enumerated in the order as nearly as possible of the number and value of their respcq- tive contributions. In the Museum the name of the Donor is attached to every specimen, as >v ell as the locality when known. As in many instances several examples of the same species have been presented by difl'erent Gentlemen, the repetition of this in the Catalogue has been considered impracticable. It is contemplated with hope by the Committee,* that this Catalogue will prove the forerunner of others, till the series be complete ; to appear in succession as soon as the requi- site arrangements of classification have been made, and the funds disposable for the purpose will bear the expense required. Hitherto, it may be remarked, the funds applied to the printing of Catalogues, like the collections them- selves, have been contributed entirely by individuals, chiefly Medical Ofiicers, interested in the welfare of the Establishment, and placed at the disposal of the Director- General for its benefit. Through the liberality of the Government an additional building has been allowed for the use of the Museum. It is desirable that this should be known to the Officers of the Department generally, coupled with the assurance, that there being now space and accommodation for arrangement, every new object presented will not only be thankfully received, but will also, with as little delay as possible, be entered in the Museum in its appropriate place. Fort Pitt, March 20th, 1838. * Tlie Committee at present consist of Dr. Davy, P.M.O. As*. Insp. of liosp., Mr. Nicholson and Dr. A. Smith, Surgeons to the Forces. PREFACE. In the construction of this Catalogue the ordinary arrange- ment of the Mammalia has been adhered to. That of the Birds is founded on the system now generally in use in this country. The determination of the genera and species, always a work of labour, has been the more diffi- cult on the present occasion, because the authorities lie scattered through a multitude of works, many of them in foreign languages, quite inaccessible except in a metropolis, and too costly for purchase by an individual. And these difficulties are yet further enhanced, when it is considered that the science of Natural History is at present in a state of transition from the form in which it was left by the Linnean writers to another not yet fully developed. New genera and species are every day proposed, some probably on imperfect data, which may hereafter fail under a more accurate and extended observation of age, sex, manners and habits. In naming species the older denominations have generally been adopted, as matter of justice to the original describers ; and as the form of the Catalogue admits of it, the authority for the original specific name in addition to that for the new genus is usually given, the old genus being added as a synonym. Some of the PRKFACR. vii more common synonyms, as well as the native or colonial names, have also been occasionally introduced, where they seemed necessary to identify the species, or likely to be useful to those members of our department serving abroad, who can have access to comparatively few works of science. The Habitat quoted is that of the original specimens only, the introduction of the localities from whence all the duplicates were derived having been found inconvenient. This task has been undertaken at such broken and uncer- tain periods as his professional duties left at the disposal of its author. Errors, doubtless, occur in it; and these arc more numerous than they might have been, had not a final revision of the specimens been necessarily disturbed by the derangement of the Collection incident to its removal to the new building now appropriated for its use. It is not, how- ever, to be expected that an individual, even under the most favorable circumstances, should be able to compose so accurate an account of a great variety of objects collected from all parts of the world as the writer of a monograph. But it is hoped that, whatever may be its defects, this pub- lication will be beneficial, by assisting in the exposition of the riches of our Museum to the Department and the scientific world, as well as by aiding the younger students among us in the pursuit of these interesting sciences.
