Barrier-Free Access Guide For Provincial Parks and Recreation Areas JUL 861994 /dibcrra ENVIRONMENTAL PROTE'^TION Alberta Parks^-^i^ Digitized by tine Internet Arcliive in 2015 littps://arcliive.org/details/barrierfreeaccesOOalbe Barrier-Free Access Guide Feel the warmth of the sun on your face and listen to the sound of the loon's call while you take in the splendour of Alberta's landscape. These sights and sounds are there for everyone to enjoy in one of Alberta's provincial parks or recreation areas. Exploring the great outdoors can be challenging for someone in a wheelchair. To help disabled visitors enjoy Alberta's provincial parks and recreation areas, the Government of Alberta is committed to improving access to park facilities and services. There are currently a number of parks and recreation areas that provide some level of barrier-free access. Existing facilities in some parks are being modified in order to make them barrier-free, or to update old barrier-free facilities to current standards. As major facilities are upgraded and new facilities are developed, specific "barrier-free" standards will be incorporated to ensure that barrier-free access is provided to a wider range of facilities. What is meant by barrier-free access? Buildings are considered to be accessible if they meet the standards contained in the "Barrier-Free Design Guide" produced by the Building Standards Branch of Alberta Labour. Currently there are no established "barrier-free" standards for some facilities, such as trails or campsites. In these cases, park staff consulted with local interest groups to determine the needs of disabled visitors in order to develop appropriate standards. The level of accessibility varies between parks. Some parks will have a number of "barrier-free" facilities, while other parks may have only a wheelchair accessible washroom. Additional services may also vary from one location to another. For example, some parks may also have barrier-free access to facilities such as fishing piers, viewpoints, amphitheatres, garbage containers, and firewood enclosures or have specially designed stoves and tables. Provincial parks and recreation areas that provide a higher level of barrier-free access to services or facilities will be identified by this symbol on highway signs. This symbol means that there will be wheelchair access to a washroom facility, campsites designed for wheelchair use ( except in parks which are day use only), a drinking water source and a telephone which are accessible, plus a barrier-free path of travel to these facilities. The following parks and recreation areas have been designated as providing a higher level of accessibility: Aspen Beach, Big Knife, Chain Lakes, Cold Lake, Crimson Lake, Dunvegan, Fish Creek, Floatingstone Lake, Franchere Bay, GregoireLake, JarvisBay Long Lake, Midland, Miquelon Lake, Park Lake, Pembina River, Pigeon Lake, Queen Elizabeth, Red Lodge, Rochon Sands, Strathcona Science Park, Sylvan Lake, Thunder Lake, Tillebrook, Vermilion, Wabamun Lake, William A. Switzer, Whitney Lakes and Wyndham-Carseland. Other parks and recreation areas not identified by a highway symbol that are listed in this guide, generally have more limited access to services and facilities. A detailed listing of wheelchair accessible facilities and services in provincial parks and recreation areas is found in this guide. Parks and recreation areas with no wheelchair access or difficult access have not been included. Kananaskis Country...
