A newsletter to promote communication among research scientists concerned witn the systematics of the Leguminosae/Fabaceae Number 34 November 1991 From the Editors Charles R. Gunn and Joseph H. Kirkbride, Jr. The BB is designed to promote communication among research scientists concerned with legume systematics. To achieve this goal the BB is issued in May and November of each year and features six columns: From the Editors, New-s (meetings, major events, announcements, etc.), Latin American Legume Report, Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation (new nodulation records), Gleanings, and Recent Legume Literature. Data in the Gleanings column are derived from questionnaire sheets which Readers complete and return. If you have new-s about legume systematics, send it to us for this column. The Recent Legume Literature column contains published research papers of specific interest to BB Readers. Recent is defined as one year old. We rarely will publish a citation that is more than one year old. Specific interest to BB Readers is defined as research papers of interest to a world wide group of legume systematic botanists. We encourage Bean Bag (BB) Readers to send us notices, observations, etc. Diacritical marks can now be placed in the BB. If such marks should be placed in your name, address, publications, etc., please let us know. We are especially interested in correcting our Directory. Thank you. A electronic copies of The Bean Bag and the Directory can be obtained from TAXACOM, a free online service for biosystematics and biogeography at the Buffalo Museum of Science, Buffalo, New' York, USA. The system operator is Dr. Richard H. Zander. TAXACOM is available 24 hours daily at telephone number 716-896-7581 using 2400/1200/300 bps, 8 data bits. 1 bit stop, and no parity. Outside of the USA use CCITT at 2400 bps, otherwise use Bell protocols. Bean Bag address: SB&ML, Bldg. 265, BARC-East Beltsville, MD 20705-2350 USA 2 Bean Bag Number 34 The Wingfield Report Robert Wingfield The world distribution of The Bean Bag copies seems in some respects considerably worse in 1990 than in 1989. Thus Africa’s share fell from 8.4 to 5.9%, Latin America’s from 17.8 to 14.6%, and the tropical share from about 21 to 18.5 %, while Europe, United Kingdom, and Maryland rose to 30, 10.1, and 4.5% from 24, 8.4, and 3.3% respectively. Interestingly, Brazil’s share rose from 4.2 to 7.9% while Argentina’s fell from 7.6 to 3.9%. Tropical America, outside of Brazil and Mexico City, now has only 2.2% (8 copies of which half go to people whose names suggest that they are probably Europeans or North Americans), an ill augur for the proposed "Latin American Legume Report" column. Asia, Australia, and USA remain with about the same share: Asia was 11.4, now 11.5%; Australia was 4.9, now 4.2%; and, USA was 31.6, now 30%. The Bean Bag is no longer sent to 11 countries (6 in Tropical America: Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, and Suriname; 2 in Africa: Algeria and Ivory Coast; New Zealand; and, Portugal), and is now being sent to 4 other countries (3 in Europe: Greece, Hungary, and Sweden; and, Taiwan). The turnover rate of recipients in some leguminously important countries seems high, e.g., the percentage of disappearances from 1989 to 1990, 30.3% of 33 recipients for the United Kingdom, 32% of 132 for USA, 37% of 19 for Australia, 50% of 14 for France, 52.4% of 21 for Argentina, 61% of 18 for India, and 100% of 6 for Colombia. One of the recipients with a European-looking name, formerly receiving The Bean Bag in Colombia, reappears under Italy, and two new readers, also with European-looking names, now receive The Bean Bag at his old address and are the only "Colombian" recipients, perhaps similarly temporary there. Of course some of these changes may be transitory fluctuation of little import, and if current readers are more useful than previous ones to The Bean Bag's aims, change is good. Why do I waste time on trivial distribution analyses, instead of publishing important legume research worth listing in the "Recent Literature" section? In my opinion these easy analyses, which no one else bothers to do, are worthwhile attempts to improve future legume research by drawing attention to areas of the world needing it. I have the necessary equipment ( The Bean Bag, pocket calculator, world map, and typewriter), funds (the price of a letter to USA), and experience, whereas for my typification studies (which are progressing slowly), I, like many tropical colleagues, lack necessary and (for us) expensive literature, equipment, transport, postage, etc., and spare time.
