Kirkbride, Jr. and John H. Wiersema The Bean Bag (BB) is designed to promote communication among research scientists concerned with legume systematics. To achieve this goal the BB is issued in May and November of each year and features six columns: From the Editors, News (meetings, major events, announcements, etc.), Latin American Legume Report, Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation (new nodulation records), New Readers, Gleanings, and Recent Legume Literature. Data in the Gleanings column are derived from questionnaire sheets which Readers complete and return. If you have news about legume systematics, send it to us for this column. The Recent Legume Literature column contains published research papers of specific interest to BB Readers. Recent is defined as one year old. We rarely will publish a citation that is more than one year old. Specific interest to BB Readers is defined as research papers of interest to a worldwide group of legume systematic botanists. We encourage BB Readers to send us notices, observations, etc. Diacritical marks can now be placed in the BB. If such marks should be placed in your name, address, publications, etc., please let us know. We are especially interested in correcting our Directory. Electronic copies of the BB and the Directory can be obtained from TAXACOM or through Internet at HUH.HARVARD.EDU. TAXACOM is a free online service for biosystematics and biogeography at the Buffalo Museum of Science, Buffalo, New York, USA. The system operator is Dr. Richard H. Zander. TAXACOM is available 24 hours daily at telephone number 716-896-7581 using 2400/1200/300 bps, 8 data bits, 1 bit stop, and no parity. Outside of the USA use CCITT at 2400 bps, otherwise use Bell protocols. HUH.HARVARD.EDU is a free service on Internet maintained by Dr. James Beach at the Harvard University Herbaria, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Connect to HUH.HARVARD.EDU via FTP using the name FTP and the password FTP, and copies of the BB and the Directory are in the subdirectory /PUB/NEWSLETTERS/BEANBAG. It involved 52 participants from 22 botanical institutions of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, England, Mongolia, Poland, and Vietnam. The meeting was chaired by Prof. G.P. Yakovlev with Yuri Roskov and A. Sytin acting as secretaries. The meeting was honored by the presence of Prof. I.T. Vassilczenko who has published numerous works on legume systematics and was a co-author of "Flora URSS," "Flora Partis Europaeae URSS," "Flora Tadzhikistanica," "Flora Turkmenii," and "Flora Iranica." The participants offered him their warmest congratulations on his 90th birthday and 70th anniversary of scientific activity. The Workshop was devoted to an introduction of the ILDIS Project to former-USSR botanists and the first demonstration of the database "Legumes of East Europe, North & Central Asia." Frank Bisby described the ILDIS Project, its recent progress and developments, and demonstrated the International Legume Database. Yuri Roskov presented the results of two-years work on the database "Legumes of East Europe, North & Central Asia," which was carried out by G. Yakovlev, A. Sytin, and Yuri Roskov. The database includes ILDIS Phase 1 data for 2,175 legume species of the former USSR and Mongolia. In addition, the two-day program included 13 reports on taxonomic, floristic, and morphological studies of legumes. A summary of legume research was presented for the following regions: Russian Far East, by N. Pavlova (Institute of Biology & Soils FED RAS, Vladivostok, Russia); Russian Siberia, poster by A. Polozhij (State University, Tomsk, Russia); Kaliningrad Region, by I. Gubareva (State University, Kaliningrad, Russia); Middle Volga Region, by N. Lodzinya (Biological Institute of the LRAS, Salaspils, Latvia); Azerbajan, poster by A. Askerov, V. Kazanfarova, and P. Garahani (Institute of Botany of ARAS, Baku, Azerbajan). Professor Yakovlev (Pharmaceutical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia) summarized modern legume literature. N. Tzvelev (Komarov Botanical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia) described taxonomic problems for critical groups of genera (Genista, Chamaecytisus, and Vicia) in the flora of Eastern Europe with special attention on the theories of supraspecific and generic structures for these taxa. In other reports the following topics were briefly considered: V. Bochkin (Main Botanical Garden, Moscow, Russia), on adventive plants of the Fabaceae in the flora of the former-USSR; T. Kuznetzova (Moscow State University, Russia), on possible approaches to the analysis of flowers-arrangement in legumes; S. Ponomarenko (Russian University of People Friendship, Moscow, Russia), on the significance of seed microsculpture for the definition of the level of species specialization; A. Magulaev (Pedagogical Institute, Stavropol, Russia), on caryology of North Caucasus legumes; L. Semerenko (Institute of Experimental Botany, Minsk, Belarus), on some results and perspectives on the caryology of wild-growing legumes of Belarus; B. Kurlovich and S. Repiev (Vavilov Institute of Industrial Plants, St. Petersburg, Russia), on the VIR Gene bank in the solution of problems in the breeding of grain legume crops; and, S. Gostimski (Moscow State University, Russia), on the creation of the genetic collection of peas (Pisum sativum) and its utility in scientific and educational work. Also excellent posters were presented by T. Kramina (Moscow State University, Russia), Ch. Sanchyr (Botanical Institute ANM, Ulan-Bator, Mongolia) and T.
