Zbe Bible Slanguage of flowers “ Consider tbe lilies of the field.”—M att. vi. 28. “ The flower fadeth : but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Isaiah xl. 8. The Bible Language of Flowers BELFAST AND NEW YORK 6S (c(o^ J %%0 I PREFACE EVER, perhaps, was there a time when Flowers were more loved and prized than at the present day. “ They seem intended,” as Ruskin has beautifully said, “for the solace of “ordinary “ humanity.” There are few who have not felt something from time to time of the feeling towards them to which Keble gave expression— “ Ye dwell beside our paths and homes, Our paths of sin, our homes of sorrow, And guilty man, where’er he roams, Your innocent mirth may borrow. The birds of air before us fleet, They cannot brook our shame to meet— But we may taste your solace sweet, And come again to-morrow.” And thus, to the devout and thoughtful mind the flowers, which have a message for all, speak a language of deeper and more spiritual import: they speak of God, His beauty and His love and the perfection of His works. Fair and beautiful indeed they are in themselves, but they are more than this to those who have eyes to see. “ I am the “ Rose of Sharon,” says the heavenly Bridegroom in the Canticles, “and the Lily of the Valley.” All the beauty of Nature is but a faint reflection of the ineffable beauty of Him who is “ the fairest among ten thousand and altogether lovely ; ” and, hence, the flowers that deck our meadows and our hedge rows, and make even the solitary wilderness to blossom as the rose, become a ‘ ‘ wayside sacrament ” to the pure in heart. As they speak to us of His beauty, so they manifest His love. “ God added the flowers over and above,” it has been beautifully said, “ when He had formed alj things for our use, just to show “us how much He loved us.” It is no bare, dull world in which He has placed us, but one in which we are surrounded on all sides with proofs of His loving care. And hence, it is not strange that flowers have ever been associated with the tenderest feelings of the heart. So delicate in tint, so varied and beautiful in form, it seems only fitting that many of them should have been chosen to convey the language of affection. The same loving God who gave them to us, and who Himself “is Love,” has given to His children as His highest gift the capacity of Love. “ Love is of God, and every one that loveth “ is born of God, and knoweth God.” “ By this shall all men “ know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.” And thus the old familiar language of the flowers may be translated into a higher and more divine language, and may tell us the story of the love of God with all its kindred lessons. The Snowdrop, so dearly loved in the early spring-time, may speak to us of Hope and of Purity, and be the fitting emblem to remind us that “every one that hath this hope in him purifieth “ himself even as He is pure.” “ The violet by a mossy stone, “half hidden from the eye,” may teach us the sweetness and preciousness of Humility, as seen in Christ, and cultivated in His true followers. The Forget-me-not may remind us of Him who has promised never to leave us or forsake us ; and the lovely Rose, so dear to all, may tell us of His unfailing Love. Thus we shall learn more and more to “look through Nature up to “ Nature’s God,” and ever cull afresh from the pages of God’s Green Book the lessons of His Inspired Word. For every reason, therefore, let us cherish our love of God’s Flowers, and strive to drink in the countless influences which they may bring to bear upon us. He misses much who passes through life with eyes and ears closed to the sweet lessons of Nature. “There is many a road into our hearts,” says Kingsley, “ besides our ears and brains : many a sight and sound “ and scent, of which we have never thought at all, sinks into “ our memory and helps to shape our character; and thus “ children brought up among beautiful sights will often show the “fruit of their training in fair faces and noble thoughts.” And if there is this subtle sympathy between the beauties of Nature and man’s natural frame, surely the spiritual affinities are no less real. Every Flower that blows may have a voice to him who has ears to hear, and a revelation of eternal verities to him who has eyes to see. “ Every leaf in every nook, Every wave in every brook. Chanting with a solemn voice, Minds us of our better choice.” It only needs that we should “ lift up our hearts,” and pray with the Christian poet, “ Thou who hast given me eyes to see, And love this sight so fair, Give me a heart to find out Thee, And read Thee everywhere.” REV.
