COMPILED BY ERNEST INGERSOLL New York 1916 HISTORICAL NOTE ^7)IRD-LORE began publication on January 1, 1899, as "An jD Illustrated Ri-Monthly Magazine Devoted to the Study and Protection of Birds." The title-pages of the first five volumes show that it was edited by Frank M. Chapman (its originator), assisted, as to the Audubon Department, by Mabel Osgood Wright. On the title-pages of Volumes VI to XII Mrs. Wright's name is ac- companied by that of William Dutcher as co-editor. The title- page of Volume XIII reads: "Edited by Frank M. Chapman. Contributing Editor, Mabel Osgood Wright. Audubon Depart- ment edited by Alice Hall Walter and William Dutcher. In Volumes XIV and XV the name of T. Gilbert Pearson appears in place of that of William Dutcher. From the beginning to the end of Volume XII the magazine bore the imprint of the MacMillan Company of New York ; since that time (1911) it has been published by D. Appleton & Company of New York. It has always been printed, however, at the Mount Pleasant Press in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The magazine has continued from the first to be published only SIX times a year, and the price (one dollar a year, fifteen cents a number) has remained the same, although the size of the volumes has been increased from 206 pages in Volume I to 498 pages in Volume XV. Its publication and popularity still continue and are likely to do so for many years to come. The Editor. New York, July 1, 1916.
