Mitchell PREFACE OUR GOAL is to produce a useful and authoritative account of the plants of New York State. Our primary means is to publish a series of treatments of families and genera by taxonomists knowledgeable in those groups. Also basic to long-term needs, is the production- of checklists of plants known to occur in the State, so that specialists have a sound starting point for their monographic studies. A checklist of vascular plants is also in preparation. This publication is a revision of a 1957 list by the same author. It incorporates an additional 22 years of field knowledge and herbarium study, gained through the cooperative efforts of Edwin H. Ketchledge and Stanley J. Smith. The numbers of districts on this map correspond with those heading the checklist. vii INTRODUCTION This Revised Checklist of the Mosses of New York State is an update of the earlier State Checklist published as Museum Bulletin Number 363 in 1957. The new catalog of species represents our expanded understanding of the floristic diversity and distribution of mosses in the State after 22 years of further study. Release of the Revised Checklist now concludes the inventory phase of our preparations of a State Moss Flora. Nomenclature for Bryidae (453 species) and Andreaeidae (3 species), follows “A New List of Mosses of North America North of Mexico” by H. A. Crum, W. C. Steere and L. E. Anderson, THE BRYOLOGIST 76(1):85-130, 1973. Nomenclature of Sphagnidae (46 species) follows “Sphagnotheca Boreali-americana: A New Exsiccata of North American Sphagna North of Mexico,” THE BRYOLOGIST 78(l):64-66 and “Sphagnotheca Boreali-americana: Fascicle II, THE BRY- OLOGIST 80(4):645-647, both by Richard E. Andrus and Dale H. Vitt. All district records of Sphagna, both new records and verification of old ones, result from the research of Dr. Andrus, whose exclusive authorship of Sphagnidae is gratefully acknowledged. Comparison of the number of taxa herewith reported reveals only a slight change from the first edition. The number of families has increased by 2 (to 47 families now), the number of genera by 4 (to 151), the species by 22 (to 461) and the number of atypical varieties reduced by 19 (to 42). More importantly, 897 district records are new to the list, an increase from 4,035 to 4,932; the majority of these additions were discovered by the author and his students at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and by Stanley J. Smith and his colleagues at the State Museum and Science Service. Many other botanists collecting on their own joined in the search over the years. In all, the names of over 60 field investigators are found on the labels of these additions and on hundreds of duplicates, thereby reflecting the increasing interest in bryological exploration around the State in recent years. Even today, however, the district records are concentrated in the Adirondack (mostly Districts 3, 4, 10, 11) and Catskill (17, 18, 20) Mountains and in two western districts where professional bryologists have been most active, around Ithaca (District 15) and Buffalo (District 13). Smith and Richard E. Andrus to the new revised list, several other recognized bryologists provided assistance when called upon from time to time. Dr. William C. Steere, who greatly aided with verifications in the first list, continues to be an inspiration, certainly for his taxonomic insights but especially for his enthusiasm and high scholarship, which is the envy and the aspiration of us all. Howard A. Crum over the years helped both Stanley and me with difficult determinations, and was unstinting in his bryologi- cal-nomenelatorial services to us. Norton G. Miller has been our most talented field investigator, turning up many exciting finds, and whose absence from the State now is sorely felt. Gary L. Smith, with similar talents, lent his expertise to difficult determinations or nomenclatorial prob- lems, for which we are most appreciative. Both in the field and at the microscope, Nancy Slack was a stimulating associate, with discerning eyes for taxonomic subtleties and unerring “sense” of species identity. Babette Brown Coleman and her associates have been very helpful “filling in” the bryoflora of the Genesee region. And Richard Zander, in his monographic works, and Eric Randall, in his ecological studies, are now accumulating additional records from the western portion of the State.
