J UN 118 1990 NiW YORK Volume 18 December 1989 99 News and Views Clyde Bramblett (18950 SW 136th St., Miami. FL 33157) sent us xeroxed information on Florida's laws for protecting native plants. The article is in Plant Industry News, vol. 31, p. 6-9, 1989. The article features a photo of one CP species, Sarracenia leucophylla. The article summarizes the provisions of Florida Statute Sec. 581.185. The law is supposedly designed to protect native plants and at the same time encourage their propagation by nurserymen and landowners. The law has the usual “endangered" and “threatened” categories, and a “commercially exploited" as well. It is illegal to harvest or destroy an endangered plant unless you have a State permit and written permission of the landowner. However, permits may not be issued for plants listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Threatened plants require only landowner permission. In the case of commercially exploited plants, landowner permission is required to harvest one or two plants of a species in this category (which may include above); if three or more are to be harvested or destroyed, then a State permit is also required. Of course, there are exceptions which about completely negate the law's intent as far as protection or encouraging propagation and sales by ethical nurserymen goes, except to the most dreamy-eyed observer. The rules do not apply in land clearance or other disturbances related to agriculture, forestry, fire control, mining, development of private properties into shopping centers or anything else. The provisions also do not apply to road building, ditch clearance, canal work, and clearing by a public agency or utility company. Of course, one can to anything he or she wishes with plants on one's own property. So, a land owner or the State or a quasi-public agency can bum, bury and bush-hog CP to your heart’s content — But an outside individual had better not try to save any of those plants, especially if they are on the Federal list and a State permit cannot even be issued! Joe Mazrimas reports that the 2nd annual CP meeting at the home and greenhouse facilities of Peter D’Amato in Guemeville, CA in May of this year was a great success. Joe talked about Darlingtonia and Chuck Powell talked about the tuberous Drosera showing slides of many species growing in cultivation and in nature. Plants were traded and sold and everyone who attended had a good time viewing Peter's plants. The San Francisco Flower Show held in the end of August was really spectacular this year due to the untiring efforts of Tony Rea and Allan Ber who set up the exhibit. The theme looked like a cross between a Mayan ruin with large slabs of stone inscribed with pictograph writings, hanging moss, red backlights with steam rising from vents and the top of a Venezuelan Tepui with several waterfalls. Everyone commented on how neat it looked especially with the prize plant of Heliamphora minor sitting on top. This year with 66 plants exhibited, the growers were: Lori Sarosi, Geoffrey Wong, Calvin Pon. Larry Logoteta, Richard Goodwin, Larry Parish. Barbara and Charles Powell, Kathy and Joe Mazrimas, Gregory and Glen Lum, Kirk Henderson and Thomas Koerber. The best plant in the show was won by G. Wong with his beautiful Heliamphora minor and the best Australian plant award of Cephalotus was again won by G. Wong. A video of "Deathtrap" was shown periodically during the show. The large crowds of people appreciated looking at the plants and getting answers to all types of questions regarding the plants. THE CONTRA COSTA HOME and GARDEN SHOW will take place April 6, 7 and 8, 1990 at the Concord Pavilion. We are all invited to show our plants and bring plants for sale as well as promote our CPN Newsletter. I'm happy to report that Michael Woodring, 4773 Laura Dr., Concord, CA 94521 will be in charge and so contact him for any good ideas on display and details for the show. 100 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Barry Mevers-Rice (Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721) came across an interesting illustrated article while going through some very old issues of Scientific American. The issue was December, 1909, p. 469. The author was Leonard Bastin who actually showed surprising knowledge of CP considering the year of publication. His premise was that over time CP might become gigantic and that in a sense the man-eating plant of Madagascar might actually come to pass. He copiously illustrated his article with various photos (apparently) and pretty good drawings with various animals and hapless people entrapped in CP. One shows a ladder standing against the petiole of a Cephalotus pitcher rising somewhat above the ground and a man at the brim of the pitcher lending a hand to pull another careless naturalist out. I think that was my favorite. Another shows a woman and a man in separate (of course — it was 1909!) traps of Dionaea, waving their arms and screaming. “A great bladderwort” is swallowing a reptile, and a large Drosera has captured several swans (swans?). Goats are trapped on leaves of butterworts. 1 think the author was quite serious. All in all, lightly enjoyable — And just when you thought it was safe to go into the greenhouse again ... Gordon C. Snelling (329'/’ W. Palm Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016) writes: The Seed Bank monthly update project is working fairly well now. I would like to emphasize that I handle the listing only and so please don’t send me seed or money for seed since Pat Dwyer still handles this part. I know that the production of seed from some species of CP can be a chore, but it’s one that is really worth the extra work required. There are some other species of seed I’d like to see in the Bank such as Genlisea, Aldrovanda, and Heliamphora but I know those few lucky enough to obtain seed are hanging on to it. I hope that seed like the Mexican and European Pinguiculas, Byblis gigantea, tuberous and Pygmy Drosera, tropical Utricularias and Nepenthes will be a common sight on the seed bank updates. An additional option on the updates is that if I receive an update request and the most recent update is nearly a month old, I will hold onto the SASE for the new one. Please be patient and 1 will see to it you receive the most recent list. To all of you who have used the service, a big thank you for your support, and if you haven't yet, it’s waiting here for you. And now on a completely different subject. As you may recall from my biography. I’m also interested in entomology. I would be very interested in contacting individuals who would be willing to collect and trade insect specimens for CP specimens. Anyone who might be interested in such a deal, contact me for further details. Bill Webber (109 Irene Dr., Vinton, VA 24179) has sent in a reminder of the color poster Wildflowers of the Southern Pinelands (#WN 1 ). The poster has been mentioned before in CPN, but perhaps new readers would be interested. It is 24 x 31” and features several southern pinelands trees and native plants as well as the following CP: Sarracenia flava, S. minor, S. psittacina, S. leucophylla, Pinguicula planifolia, Drosera capillaris, D. filiformis var. tracyi, Utricularia purpurea and U. radiata. The poster is available by direct order from United Communications, 644 Merrick Rd., Lynbrook, NY 11563, for $10.95 US plus $3.00 postage. In place of a frame, a "poster hanger” can be obtained for $4.00. (We have also seen the poster advertised in many natural history catalogs, Carolina Biological Supply Co., and for sale in many natural history museum and botanical garden gift shops). It is very attractive and worth having. Call for Papers The Co-Editors would like to extend a call for papers, cartoons, poems, a few well-conceived short stories, illustrations, jokes (corny and good), and possibly a crossword puzzle. The theme would be “Legends of CP." Please submit all material to Joe Mazrimas. Volume 18, December 1989 101 The Story of Tom Darling and Bear Lake By Phil Sheridan (Rt. 2. Box 2120, Woodford. VA 22580, USA) Introduction Bear Lake is a glacial lake at an elevation of one thousand eight hundred and ninety one feet above sea level in Lackawana County, Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1930 a number of plants from the eastern U.S.. especially Pennsylvania, were introduced to the North Cove Bog at Bear Lake by Thomas Darling. The results of these introductions after sixty-nine years are discussed. Discussion The Bear Lake Association was formed in the late 1800's as part of a ninety-nine year lease from the state of Pennsylvania for a summer resort. This is where young Tom Darling spent many summers roaming and exploring the Pocono woods and developing his interest in botany. These explorations in Mr. Darling's youth led to a lifelong love of botany and a willingness to try experimental plant transplants at Bear Lake. Additionally Tom Darling discovered many rare ferns in Florida and published several papers on these rarities in the early 1960‘s. Having visited many unique areas in Pennsylvania and the southeastern United States. Tom Darling decided to attempt the introduction of a variety of plant species to the North Cove Bog at Bear Lake. Prior to this decision the North Cove Bog was a rather botanically mediocre glacial sphagnum bog with the following species: Calth palustris L. (Water Arum). Chamaedaphne acalyculata (L.) Moench (Leather Leaf), Decodon verticillata (L.) Ell. (Swamp Loosetrife), Drosera intermedia Hayne (Spathulate leaved Sundew), D. rotundifolia L. (Round Leaved Sundew), Dulichium arundinaceum L. Britton (Three Way Sedge), Gaultheria hispidula L. Muhl. (Creeping Snowberry), Eleocharis acicidaris (L.) R. & S. (Needle Spike Rush), Eriophorum virginicum L. (Virginia Cotton Grass), Kalmia angustifolia L. (Sheep Laurel), Myrica gale L. (Sweet Gale), Osmunda cinnamomea L. (Cinnamon Fern). Rhododendron canadense (L.) Torn (Rhodora), Rhynchospora alba (L.) Vahl. (White Beak Rush), Sagittaria latifolia Wi lid. (Arrowhead), Sarracenia purpurea L. (Purple Pitcher Plant), Thelypteris simulata (Davenp.) Nieuwl. (Massachusetts Fem), Utricularia purpurea Walter (Purple Bladderwort). Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait. and V. oxycoccos L. (Large and Small Cranberry respectively). The area surrounding the bog harbored hemlock, white pine and mountain laurel. Other plants found at North Cove Bog are detailed by Darling and Shetler in a 1972 Castanea paper. (Darling and Shetler, 1972). Below is a list of those species introduced to North Cove Bog at Bear Lake by Thomas Darling starting in approximately 1931. Also listed are the original collection areas. # Species Location 1 . Andromeda glaucophylla Link. (Bog Rosemary) 2. Arethusa bulbosa L. (Bog Rose or Swamp Pink) 3. (Meadow Beauty) Grassy Lake, Pa. Volume 18, December 1989 103 22. Sarracenia flava L. (Yellow Pitcher Plant) Wilmington. N.C. 23. Sarracenia rubra Walt. (Sweet or Red Pitcher Plant) Wilmington, N.C. 24. Woodwardia virginica Peat Bog near Pocono (L.) Smith. (Virginia Chain Fem) Manor, Pa. 25. Woodwardia areolata (L.) Moore. (New-Veined Chain Fem) Coastal area. The results of these introductions have been mixed. Some of the species were able to survive and flourish, others perished early, and some have spread very little or barely maintained their original planting. The most successful in order of colonization were Menyanthes trifoliate/, Woodwardia virginica, Rhe.xia virginica. Pogonia ophioglosoides and Habenaria blephariglottis. In the sixty- nine years since these plants have been introduced they have filled all available habitat. The Virginia Chain Fern, Meadow Beauty and Buckbean have spread by means of thick runner roots, seeds or spores. The orchids have spread by budding and seeds to sphagnous hummocks and open grassy patches. Early casualties were Andromeda glaucophylla, Arethusa bulbosa, Calopogon pulchellus, Cypripedum candidum, C. calceolus, C. reginae, Drosera filiformis, Habenaria ciliaris. H. cristata, H fimbriata, H . integra, H . nivea, Linnaea borealis, Lygodium palmatum and Woodwardia areolata Reasons are not clear for their demise but apparently they were not able to compete in the succession of this bog. Darling (Darling, 1989) states that "there was a large area of open sphagnum (with hummocks) between the original S.flava colony and extending south to ... several all-green leaved 5. purpurea. Here it was that I planted literally dozens of Arethusa from Mt. Lake Bog in N.J. (near Del. Water Gap), Pogonias and Calopogons. ... all now covered with dense shrubbery." Thus in less than sixty years the open sphagnum bog habitat required by some bog species has disappeared at North Cove Bog. Subtle microhabitat differences may also have excluded many of these plants thousands of years ago from establishing themselves at this site. Today Linnaea borealis and Calopogon pulchellus can be found in suitable sites approximately twenty miles from Bear Lake. Some species, such as Drosera filiformis. prefer open moist sand habitats to survive and flourish. This type of habitat was lacking in the peat bog at Bear Lake. Deer and rabbits were also responsible for eating the flower stalks of pitcher plants and many orchids. (Darling. 1943). This may have prevented some of the introduced plants from seeding and becoming established. Succession in North Cover Bog at Bear Lake is further illustrated by the disappearance of the native bog species Car ex baileyi Britton, Drosera intermedia and Gaultheria hispidula. Herbarium collections were made of D intermedia by Tom Darling in the early 1900's at Bear Lake. The Labrador Tea ( Ledum groenlandicum ) has managed to survive and spread several times. Only one new colony, however, was able to survive. Without human intervention the original colony of Labrador Tea would be in poor health today. Tom Darling has had to prune invading shrubs which threaten to overtake this shrub. Strong competition probably explains the natural lack of this species in North Cove Bog. The Labrador Tea is found in abundance sixteen miles away at Lehigh Pond where it is flourishing in an expansive kettle hole bog. The species seems to require open bog for survival. Labrador Tea apparently cannot compete well with other shrubs. The same applies to Kalmia polifolia (Bog Laurel), which is struggling for survival at North Cove Bog but is not uncommon at Lehigh Pond. 104 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter The transplant of Dionaea muscipula lasted for nineteen years. Of four plants one survived the first few years and continued to flower and produce vigorous leaves. No seedling activity was observed and the plant finally succumbed in 1960 to one of the more severe winters. The winter of 1960 was one of the coldest on record with lows of 24 degrees below zero. Snowfall was within one inch of an all time record and snow covered the ground until the first of May. My impression is that the Dionaea probably rotted out due to the extended snow cover. Snow would be an effective protection in winter but protracted cover without growth could result in the plant rotting out. This indeed was a remarkable survival record for this southern herb. S. rubra has continued to flower over the years but has only spread once. This new colony failed to survive. Hybridization with S. purpurea has also been limited by the later flowers of S. rubra and the tendency of deer to eat the tender flower stalks. No hybrids have been found between either S.flava or S. purpurea with S. rubra. S.flava has been the most successful of the southeastern pitcher plants in the bog. The original planting is now seventy inches long and a foot wide! Three other clumps of S.flava managed to become established within fifty feet of the original planting but only one has survived. One of the limiting factors in the spread of S.flava is the early flowering time of this species. Although this favors hybridization with S. purpurea it also exposes the flowers to frost damage. Late frosts and lack of suitable soils, as well as other environmental factors, have probably limited the spread of S.flava to other parts of the bog. Over the forty nine years that S. flava has been at Bear Lake a number of hybrids have occurred with S. purpurea. Below follows a list of the occurrence of the hybrid S. ,y catesbaei Elliott at Bear Lake. 1. 1961. Found near the original colony of S. flava and survived without flowering until 1966. Hybrid station 1 . Discovered by Dr. and Mrs. A. Gerard DeVoe, Chappaqua, N.Y., who called it to the attention of Tom Darling. Tom Darling confirmed its identity with botanists at the National Herbarium of the Smithsonian Institution. 2. 1965. Found 200 meters across the cove from the original S. flava with a barrier of 100 meters of open water. Survived one season without flowering. Hybrid station 2. Discovered by Dr. and Mrs. A. Gerard DeVoe. 3. 1969. Found 3 meters east of the original S.flava colony. Survived till 1970. Hybrid station 1A. Discovered by T. Darling. 4. 1970. Found 15 meters east of the original S. flava colony growing between S. purpurea and a new elump of S. flava. Survived till 1986. Hybrid station 3. (See figure 1.) Discovered by T. Darling. 5. 7/15/86. “A group of botanists from Morris Arboretum. Philadelphia, under the supervision of Dr. Ann Rhoads, discovered a thriving colony of S. x catesbaei near the water’s edge on the N.W. side of N. Cove, about 100 meters due east of the original colony of S.flava. There were no flowers at this time. However, just one year later, on 7/18/87, I discovered 4 flowering stalks in evidence amidst many leaves. In 1988 there were no flowers, but the number of leaves had increased to about 27 and the plant was evidently thriving. This is hybrid station 4.” (Darling, 1989). (See Figure 2.) 6. “On 8/15/87 a 5th location for the hybrid [S. x catesbaei] was found by Philip Sheridan of Arlington Co., VA. There were only 2 leaves and no flowers. (About 5 meters S. of station 4. This is hybrid station 5.” (Darling, 1989). 7. “On 8/6/88 Phil Sheridan discovered still another hybrid [S.x catesbaei] several meters northwest of the original S. flava colony. Two leaves and no flowers. This is hybrid station 6.’’ (Darling, 1989). This hybrid was growing on the side of a small hummock in the midst of the original S. rubra colony. 8. 8/6/88. A small clump of the hybrid [S. v catesbaei] was found by me about 15 meters north west of the original S. flava colony and approximately five meters west of the original S. rubra station. This is hybrid station 7 which did not survive to 1989. Volume 18, December 1989 105 Figure 1 : S. x catesbaei Hybrid station 3. Photo by Tom Darling Thus since 1961 there have been eight occurrences of S. x catesbaei. One clump has flowered and the longest period of survival for the hybrid is sixteen years for station 3. 5. x catesbaei seems to be more successful in colonization than either 5. flava or S. rubra. There have only been three new stations for S. flava, one for S. rubra, but eight for S. x catesbaei\ This greater survival and colonization of the hybrid is probably due to the fact that S. x catesbaei possesses enough of the characteristics of the native S. purpurea to give it a competitive edge over the introduced S. flava. Since it is an intermediate, it is able to exploit an ecological niche which neither of the parent species are able to capitalize on. Stations four, five and six continue to survive through 1989. Conclusion Twenty five plant species were introduced to North Cove Bog at Bear Lake starting in 1930. Sixteen species were unable to survive due to succession, competition, lack of suitable soils, severe weather, animal predation or unknown causes. Nine species were able to survive. Of the nine surviving species Menyanthes trifoliata, Woodwardia virginica, Rhexia virginica, Pogonia ophioglosoides and Habenaria blephariglottis have spread and flourished. Sarracenia flava has spread and maintained one colonization and Sarracenia rubra. Ledum groenlandicum and Kalmia polifolia have spread once but not maintained their settlement. The hybrid S. x catesbaei has occurred eight times and survives in three stations. The hybrid flowered once in 1987. 106 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Figure 2: S. x catesbaei. Hybrid station 4. VA 24301, USA CPN readers will recall our article in the September, 1988 issue describing the building of the Luqua Conservatory in the Atlanta Botanical Garden, including a photo of work in progress (CPN 17:73-75). Well, they finished on time, and what a beauty it is. Figure 1 . Fuqua Conservatory from front. All photos by author. 108 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter In July, 1989, while botanizing in the south, Brenda and I stopped by to see the new Conservatory which had only been open for about three months. Knowing the Fuqua Conservatory Superintendent, Ron Dettennan, and being supplied with updates from Lisa Frank of the Garden, we expected something excellent, but we were still taken back by what had been accomplished. The Conservatory was built on a multi-habitat plan in which tropical, desert, temperate, etc. areas would be featured and climate-controlled using the most modern and least obtrusive devices. You have to really look for the mist nozzles and tubes. When they go off in the tropical section, they do not drench you as is the case in so many conservatories, but just fill the air with a very fine mist of humidity. The general design is quite attractive and inviting as one approaches the front door (Fig. 1 ). The tropical dome is most prominent, and off to the right (Fig. 2) are the extensive working (sometimes known as “prop”) houses. On the far left corner of the Conservatory is a neat little cupola (Fig. 3), and there will be more about that later. I could go on about all the fine plantings, but must restrict myself here to CP. One thing that we immediately noticed was that the Conservatory did not look like it had only been open for three months; it looked quite mature in that most of the plants were full size. It looked as though it had grown there awhile, but not to the point that plants were all pressing against the glass everywhere as in a conservatory sadly neglected in another large southern city. In the lobby is kind of an electronic table of contents and index. This consists of two CRT screens. The smaller is a touch active computer screen listing a menu of short programs describing various areas, displays and plant groups (including CP, of course) in the conservatory. One simply makes a selection by touching it on the screen, and the program appears in color with music and narration on the larger screen. The magic of computers and video disc is at work here. , The paths lead one quite naturally through all of the Conservatory and are so constructed that one does not really have to worry about missing anything if he or she wants to take the full tour. CP are scattered in various suitable niches of the temperate and tropical habitats, and labeling and Figure 2. View of working greenhouse off to right. Volume 18, December 1989 109 Figure 3. Exterior of CP room cupola. descriptive signs are excellent (Fig. 4-7). One simply does not read genus and species on a hastily scrawled tag, but in appropriate areas there are little transparent plastic signs describing what is unique about the plant or plants (Fig. 4). Now, back to our mysterious little cupola. This is the CP room, in addition to the plantings elsewhere in the Conservatory. It is very well lit (two major US botanical gardens persist in hiding CP away in little displays in dark foyers between major rooms). Hanging about from the ceiling are many baskets of Nepenthes (Fig. 8), and in the center of the room is an open terrarium (Fig. 9) which must have 30-35 species of CP planted in it, nearly all genera represented, including Heliamphora in an open (yes, open!) display where one can get close. It was in the CP room that we ran into Ron Detterman whom I had not seen for about ten years. Ron is not a behind-the-desk superintendent. He wears blue jeans and the standard Garden employee green T-shirt with the Garden monogram on it, and talks about getting down on his hands and knees and weeding. From this point, Ron took us back to the growing houses, usually off limits to casual visitors. I always look for ways to get into the growing or prop houses of botanical gardens, saying as I do, “That’s where the good stuff is!" This is not to detract from the public displays, particularly this superior one, but botanical gardens do tend to keep their more rare and newly acquired material in the security of the growing houses. In the growing house were several rolling tables covered up with CP, many cuttings and seedlings as well as full-grown and nearly full-grown plants. The new rolling bench system in greenhouses is nice since you do not waste space with an aisle you are not in at the moment; you roll a balanced table effortlessly against another and make the aisle you need at the moment. After seeing what was going on in the growing houses, Ron led us out back outdoors again. The Conservatory area is nicely landscaped and includes tiers of grass, plantings, strategically placed and attractive stone and walkways, and several ponds. One of the ponds has native US CP 110 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Figure 4. Figure 5. Figures 4-7. Nepenthes plantings out in main Conservatory. Figures 6. Figures 7. Ground-level CP wilh large Dionaea grown from seed Volume 18, December 1989 113 growing very exuberantly along an edge of it (Fig. 10-1 1). Again the plants are quite mature, including some especially large Dionaea (Fig. 12) raised originally from seed. The plants had mostly been crowded in Ron’s own greenhouse until it was time to move in. The pond area had been planted the summer before while work on the Conservatory was still in progress and they had nicely survived the winter. The growing medium along the edge of the pond is actually a fill of peat and local river sand in a portion of the pond with a structural band to hold up the shoreline. This places the water table only about 6-8 inches beneath the surface. During the winter, Ron protected more tender plants such as small butterworts, sundews and Sarracenia psittacina (Fig. 13) with a mulch covering of pine needles. Given the success so far with this outdoor planting, he plans to expand it into unused parts of the planting area of this pond which will nearly triple the CP planting. He weeds fairly frequently by cutting unwanted herbs off just below the surface. He feels that this is less disturbing than pulling weeds by the roots which come up with adherent growing medium and often smaller CP as well. The cutting technique is of course exactly what a farmer does with his cultivator, and most often the roots eventually die. We bade Ron farewell and thanked him for taking a great deal of time showing us around and talking with us. and went off to look at “ordinary” plants elsewhere in the Garden. We will certainly be back. In the eastern United States at least, this is undoubtedly the CP display and genestock for other gardens, including many older ones, to emulate. If you are passing near or through Atlanta, or can make a trip there specifically, by all means stop by and look this entire Garden over. The Atlanta Botanic Garden is in Piedmont Park on the Piedmont Avenue side; the Park is shown on all sidebar maps of Atlanta on southeastern or Georgia roadmaps and is easily accessible from either 1-85 northeast, or 1-75/1-85 passing through the city. Dream and the Reality By “Mr. Smith,” Australia When I first heard the CITES regulations were coming in I wondered if they would prove a valuable conservation aid or just another lot of red tape. Unfortunately the case is the latter. In Eastern Australia Sarracenia species and hybrids tlourish and flower and set seed freely. Because of CITES regulations I cannot send Sarracenia seed to C.P.N.'s seed bank. Just how is this helping preserve them in their natural habitats? Three Sarracenia species are on Appendix I, they being S. oreophila, S. rubra ssp. jonesii and S. rubra ssp. alabamensis. The latter two are given a rather artificial specific status for CITES purposes. I received 3 small rhizomes of all 3 about 20 years ago in the case of S. oreophila and S. rubra ssp. jonesii and of S. rubra ssp. alabamensis about a year after its discovery. I received seed of the albino form of S. rubra ssp. jonesii a few months after its discovery. All have flourished under my conditions and have been divided many times. Most of the divisions have been sold or given away within Australia with the result that within this country they are easier to obtain than some colour forms of S.flava and S. purpurea fma. heterophylla. I have on at least 6 occasions sent plants of the three Appendix 1 Sarracenias to collectors in U.S.A. The most recent two times were after the CITES regulations were in and I used false names. Why I have had to do this is that by sending these plants I was discouraging the people they were going to from being tempted to try and illegally collect their own. What has happened to reduce the Appendix I Sarracenias to an endangered situation? (1 ) They originally had small habitats. (2) Destruction of habitats through activities of man. - Agriculture, artificial lakes, draining of swamps, golf courses, etc. 114 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter (3) Illegal collection. - not significant until populations were so small because of habitat destruction. Where do these illegally collected plants go? The only country that sells wild collected Sarracenia rhizomes is U.S.A. In Australia it is easier to propagate our own as imported plants take at least 2 years to fully reverse seasons and quarantine house conditions often cause losses. The only times I have imported is to get varieties I could not get in Australia. Few if any illegally collected rare Sarracenias ever are sent out of U.S.A. Now Nepenthes. Under my conditions many of these will grow out of doors and most of these flower freely. 1 have about 30 large seedlings of our Appendix I N. khasiana. I also have a cutting grown plant that a friend gave me. It has flowered and is a female. Presumably one at least of my seedlings will be a male and I will be able to produce plenty of seed of it. What will I be able to do with it? Everyone who grows Nepenthes in Australia has it. I can't legally send it overseas without a lot of fuss and red tape. How does this help conserve the species in its natural habitat? I imported 12 Nepenthes plants last year. The friend sending them could not get his CITES pemiit in time so he sent them to another friend who he thought could get one sooner. He could not so they finally went via a third person. The permit was a very restrictive one only allowing certain named plants in. Curiously N. khasiana was on it but had been crossed out. With a few adjustments my plants fitted the permit and so they came here. The quarantine here managed to get some of the names wrong, but I was still able to know which was which if I consulted my lists. One time the quarantine inspector carefully looked at each plant but if all had been Sarracenias he would not have know the difference. Just what was all this great fuss over? Not it was not N. rajah or N. khasiana or hybrids of them. Ten were hybrids and the other 2 were one each hirsuta and ventricosa (speckled form). I want them for breeding and expect eventually to have spare seed from them and guess what I won't legally be allowed to do with it. If the aim of CITES was to accelerate the extinction of endangered species, its present regulations would assist this. Tepuis The Lands Unknown By Jeffrey Gold, 2560 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, California 94704 (415) 540-5400 FAX (415) 540-54 1 5 On the evening of January 24, 1990, I will arrive in Caracas, Venezuela to begin a project that I have been dreaming about for the past ten years. I will study the delicate ecological balance of the northernmost reaches of the Amazon Basin of South America, where nature has carved over 100 fantastic table mountains, or tepuis, as they are called by the Indians. In September of 1979, I first learned about the tepuis of Venezuela upon reading an illustrious description by Joseph Mazrimas within the pages of CPN. 1 dreamed of someday visiting this region that has proven to be nearly inaccessible to mankind. Today that time has come. I will soon leam the hidden secrets of the tepuis. I have organized a nonprofit corporation called TEPUIS to conduct and publish ecological research. TEPUIS is coordinating efforts in Venezuela which will last a minimum of six months or, more likely, as long as several years. Offices are located in Berkeley, California and a research facility will be opened in Venezuela to coordinate South American expeditions. TEPUIS’s expeditions are largely funded by private and institutional donations. TEPUIS provides photographic portfolios and live botanical specimens in return for contributions that support our research efforts. You will see many of the results of our expeditions illustrated and described within the pages of CPN in the coming months. TEPUIS researchers have been trained to take great care not to disturb the ecological balance of any region when obtaining specimens from the field. Our efforts have the support of the Volume 18, December 1989 115 Venezuelan government which is providing the necessary permits and guidance for our efforts. Collected specimens will be propagated through tissue culture for further distribution to scientists around the world. TEPUIS will publish a scientific journal four times per year, as well as operating seed, plant, photo, and movie banks. TEPUIS will also sponsor guided expeditions through the tepuis of South America. You can become a member of TEPUIS and receive the TEPUIS newsletter by making a contribution of $25 - $500 to support our research efforts. Contributions of $100 or more will entitle you to one free plant specimen for each $10 donated ($100 = 10 plants, $250 = 25 plants). It is not our goal to become a commercial supplier. The aforementioned prices are only a guide to help us solicit funds to continue our research in South America. TEPUIS will also donate plant material to universities for research, and to commercial growers for further propagation and distribution. As I depart for Venezuela, I would like to thank all of the members of ICPS who have already pledged their moral, monetary, and scientific support for our projects in South America. I look forward to sharing our results with you soon. Insectivorous Flora of Sequoia National Park By Thomas L. Engelhardt, P.O. 281, Lodgepole, Sequoia National Park, CA 93262 For the past seventeen years I have been actively involved in my advocation, growing carnivorous plants; but throughout this time have never had the opportunity to observe and study them in the wild, until now. When I became a naturalist for the National Park Service, one of the first things I did was begin the search for these marvelous plants. I received a few tips from the veteran rangers on the staff, and utilizing many botanical references, tried to determine possible species diversity, distribution and localities. Research has shown that in or in close proximity of the boundaries of Sequoia National Park there is one species of the family Droseraceae and four species of the family Lentibulariaceae. In the family Droseraceae, Drosera rotundifolia is the sole inhabitant of this 630 square mile preserve. From the family Lentibulariaceae it has been established that four species of the genus Utricularia are present: Utricularia gibba, minor, vulgaris and intermedia. In mid June, after only a 15 minute search. 1 came upon Drosera rotundifolia in its moist, acidic, niche, within the Montane Meadow Community, surrounded along the perimeter by giant sequoias ( Sequoiadendron giganteum). How exhilarating it was to see Drosera rotundifolia in its native habitat, hidden under a canopy of Sierra wildflowers and meadow grasses at an elevation of 6600 feet. The healthiest population of these glistening gems was in the wettest region of the meadowland, where some plants actually established themselves in a small tributary beneath two centimeters of water. In order to gain access to the sundews I utilized a fallen sequoia that traversed the bog as an observation point. Thus the fragility of the meadow was preserved and no damage to the delicate ecosystem could occur. Plants growing in the full sun develop tight, robust, basal rosettes approximately 3.1 centimeters in diameter and dark crimson coloration. Plants hidden from the direct rays of the sun under taller vegetation, were lighter in color, and interestingly, possessed significantly longer petioles of approximately 4-5 centimeters. At the end of the month I returned to find the same population covered with an array of attractive, white inflorescences and by the first of September, most of the Drosera rotundifolia had gone to seed and will begin the dissemination process. Though a four month period of dormancy is quickly approaching, winter hibemicula were not observed as of the printing of this article. My search for members of the genus Utricularia was, at first, futile. For days I explored numerous Sub- Alpine Meadow localities, at an elevation of 7680 feet, until one morning I came 116 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Figure 1. Exploring the native habitat of Drosera rotundifolia in Sequoia National Park. Figure 2. Dense populations of Drosera rotundifolia flourish in Sequoia National Park. Note: Scapose white inflorescence. Figures 3. Drosera rotundifolia stalking its prey! Figures 4. Utricularia intermedia are highly visible during early July. Note: The emergent inflorescence and the submerged trapping appendages. Volume 18, December 1989 117 upon an odd looking assortment of aquatic vegetation. Under closer scrutiny I had discovered a cornucopia of Utricularia intermedia (Flat-Leaved Bladderwort). Emergent flower scapes, with brilliant yellow corollas and possessing 8-10 distinct crimson markings, were present, but not numerous. The identification of this species is not difficult, (unlike most members of this genus!). There are two distinct types of leaf morphology: one without bladders, very much crowded on the stems, two-ranked and 2-3 times divided with linear flat-leaves, and a second type with separate, colorless, leafless branches possessing bladders 2-5 millimeters in length. The leafless branches prefer to embed themselves in organic sediments, making the trapping mechanisms difficult to distinguish below the water surface. A winter, resting bud at the posterior end of the stem is also evident. I located Utricularia intermedia in two ecotones: open meadows, which were exposed to direct sunlight and tranquil tributaries under aquatic vegetation. In some locals the water level was less than 2.56 centimeters and the temperatures exceeded 3 1 degrees Celsius. Severe drought conditions have been evident all summer long across the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Since early June only .02 of an inch of measurable precipitation has occurred; thus when I returned to the locality in late August, I was not surprised to find the bogs completely dried up and the distribution of Utricularia intermedia completely absent. Four kilometers down the road I found a small creek containing coffee-tinted waters indicating high levels of acidity. 1 decided to explore further and to my surprise, I located a free-floating species of bladderwort in a semi-shaded, quiet spot, dammed off by fallen trees. I identified it as the species Utricularia minor, an uncommon aquatic in the Sierra Nevada mountains, according to Munz, 1959. The Lesser Bladderwort is slender stemmed, about 1-3 decimeters long, with few divisions and bearing 1-5 trapping mechanisms per petiole. Utricularia minor appears to have a few large leaves with flatten segments and no bladders, alternating among branches containing bladders. No flower scapes were present which would have helped taxonomic verification a great deal. Although the literature states that both Utricularia gibba and vulgaris are also native to this region, 1 found no evidence to support that conclusion throughout my three month investigation. For many millennia the giant sequoias have stood guard at the perimeter of these meadowlands. These inconspicuous little marvels, the insectivorous plants, are in my estimation just as inspiring as the three thousand year old giant redwoods that attract 2.5 million visitors to Sequoia National Park each year. Belanger, 988 Brightwood Dr., Toms River, N.J. 08753 Use of leaf cuttings is a method employed for the propagation of many carnivorous plant genera. Drosera, Dionaea, Pinguicula, Cephalotus and even Sarracenia, Darlingtonia, and Heliamphora can be propagated successfully by leaf cuttings. Accidentally, and then through experimentation, it became evident to me that it is possible to propagate Utricularia by leaf cuttings. It is especially effective when more than one species of Utricularia share the same pot and they need to be separated. I should also say that U . suhulata has the annoying habit of popping up in the greenhouse in undesirable places. If more plants are desired than can be supplied and the mother plant should be saved it is easier to take a leaf cutting of that particular Utricularia species than to divide a beautiful clump of Utricularia. These are reasons enough to try taking leaf cuttings for the propagation of Utricularia. I have found propagation of Utricularia by leaf cuttings to be very simple. Fill a pot w ith the usual medium in which the mother plant grows. For terrestrials it is a mixture of Sphagnum, peat moss and sand, and for the epiphytes it is a mixture of Sphagnum, peat moss and cypress mulch. The plants which give the best results are those that have young, fresh growth and the plant should be mature. The leaf is planted in the soil with its base well covered with the desired medium (in the case of U. longifolia it is necessary to cut the leaves into pieces about 1 inch in length). U. nephrophylla, and probably U. reniformis, must be taken and placed flat onto the soil with as much of the petiole covered horizontally as possible. U. reniformis may have to be experimented with since I do not grow that species. Leaves of U. monanthos, U. pubescens and similarly small species are taken and half covered, leaving the rest exposed to the light. The light level should be about half of what Drosera receive. The temperature should be between 68 and 86 degrees F (20 to 30 degrees C) and the humidity should be very high. It takes varying lengths of time for the different species of Utricularia to show results. Under my conditions the average length of time is about 3 weeks. It takes U . longifolia, U. calycifida and a species from Venezuela about two weeks. A well established plant becomes available in about 2 months. U. nephrophylla and a species received from Rio de Janeiro take about 4 weeks for growth to be visible; a plant is available the next growing season. U. monanthos and U. pubescens take about 6 weeks for noticeable growth. A time period of 6 months is necessary for the smaller species to become well established. I have not yet tried U. asplundii, U. humboldtii and U. quelchii but I have a feeling it might work. The only way to determine whether the plant is established well enough to transplant is by using your best judgment. I use this propagation method commonly for the rarer species since I do not wish to divide a beautiful clump. Want Ad Charles Sadler (8447 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 424, Beverly Hills, CA 9021 1). Univ. of Wisconsin, Dept, of Botany, Madison, W1 53706. This selection resulted from crossing Nepenthes glahratus X Nepenthes veitchii during 1986. The overall appearance of ‘Joanne Holland' is intermediate between the parent species. Plants are vining and branched like N. glahratus, but with larger pitchers with broadly flaring peristomes like A. veitchii The distinctive pitchers are colorfully red-flecked. The cultivar is named for Dr. Joanne Holland of Madison, Wisconsin. Nepenthes mirahilis ‘Greenhorn' Designated by Miloslav Studnicka, Sc. Museum, Leninovall, 460 01 Liberec, Czechoslovakia. This selection is characterized by having uniformly green pitchers. The rim is also pure green, while the wild type usually has a purple to chestnut rim. Pitchers are up to 14 cm. high, 3 cm. w ide, with two conspicuous nerves instead of wings; and with a round lid. Foliar part of leaf is about 22 cm. long, 6 cm. wide, thin, pale green and slightly hairy, with bristled margins. The cultivar has not been seen in flower. N. mirahilis 'Greenhorn' was acquired by the Botanical Gardens in Liberec on two occasions. It was donated by the Botanical Gardens in West Berlin in 1980 and by the Botanical Gardens in Halle, East Germany in 1987. It is sometimes mislabeled “A. vieillardii" in European Botanical Gardens. A voucher specimen for this cultivar has been filed in the herbarium of Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia. 120 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter On the Cultivation of Drosera Linearis Part II By Richard Shomin, 983 Barney, Flint, Ml 48503 Since my last article, (CPN 17:114-117), l have made improvements in my growing system and revisions with some good news on growing this challenging little sundew on a long-term basis. I made the improvement of getting rid of the siphon and putting a rot-proof material (fiberglass) in the bottom of a plastic pot to hold the fine native marl. This improved the water flow through the culture. Once again the hibemacula started growing in the spring, but two weeks later the plants waned and died. 1 figured that a build up of nutrients was occurring due to evaporation of water out of the culture. By late spring I planned on building a solar still and gathered materials for a modified apparatus. Figure 1 shows distilled water flowing through the marl into the reservoir and out of the reservoir purge port to prevent mineral concentration. After setting this up and letting it run for a few days, I collected some plants and subjected them to a very meaningful test. I put fresh plants into the same marl that killed the previous plants. How cruel! Deliberately sending sundews to their seemingly certain doom. Definitely not a test for the faint of heart. Week after week I checked the culture and was greeted by their fully adorned glistening tentacles, just like the wild plants. The culture plants formed their hibemacula at the same time as the wild plants in early September after a cooler than normal August. Just as in a natural habitat this apparatus closely mimics the natural purging process of the seeps of a marl fen. Cultivation apparatus for D linearis . Photos by author. Volume 18, December 1989 121 In a solar still diameter of 24" (61 cm) I had a yield of 297 mL of distilled water after a sunny day. The still seemed most active in late afternoon when it yielded one drop every five seconds. The solar still tends in part to play the role of my early flotation device. For this reason I removed the bicycle inner tubes and downsized the reservoir. Downsizing the reservoir is not only for simplification, but it is important that the condensation rate of the still is greater than the evaporation rate of the culture and reservoir if the purging process is to be effective. I am using a 5 Vi (14 cm) diameter pot for the plants that is working well. The culture support plate not only supports the pot but reduces evaporation from the reservoir. The reservoir is necessary to keep the water level in the plantings nearly constant as well as providing a backup supply of water on cloudy days. What is nice about this setup is that the plants do not require attention on a daily basis. The garden hose is not used as a hose at all in the still. The convenience of a readily available flexible material to line the inside of the still is the reason for it. Condensate is collected between the wall of the still and the top part of the hose. Then the condensate flows out of a small hole and through a small tube to the culture. A silicone sealant was placed around the contact point of the garden hose and still wall as well as around the rim of the still where the glass goes on. Better still yields can be obtained if the still container is insulated and the glass allowed to cool by wind. Drosera linearis transplants easily during the growing season if there is no delay. I am not sure the plants will hold out if mailed. The plants transplant most readily after the hibemacula form in the autumn. Here the plants resist coming out of dormancy during warm periods in the autumn. TAPWATER IN SUNLIGHT s s / j INSTILL WALL PAINTED WITH FLATBLACK CONDENSATE OUT (TYGON TUBE) RESERVOIR PURGE PORT RESERVOIR GLASS GARDEN HOSE CULTURE SUPPORT PLATE FIBERGLASS POT-^ FIG 1 Drawing by Frank McLanghlin 122 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Summary on the Cultivation of Drosera Linearis Dormancy - Drosera linearis goes into dormancy by mid September to early October in this location. To imitate the dormancy period if you cannot expose the plants to winter, put the plants in a refrigerator at a temperature of 34° - 39°F ( 1° - 4°C) after the hibemacula form. I would place the pot in another reservoir so that water just covers the hibemacula and is cone shaped so it does not crack during freezing. Put plastic wrap over the reservoir. Using fungicide as a precaution is fine, but I never use them. By late December, 1 put the hibemacula into the freezer at 0° - -25°F (- 18°C - -4°C). I have good reason to believe that the hibemacula will survive temperatures even lower than those of more northern locations. For January and February i would put the hibemacula into the refrigerator at least once a month for a thaw and then back into the freezer. This freezing and thawing might be important for biochemical reactions that are needed for the active growing season. This might also be important for many seeds of the temperate regions of the world (stratification). Place the hibemacula into the refrigerator by March. When mid-April comes around the hibemacula can come out of dormancy. Drosera linearis grows best in full sunlight for the entire day. I have never found plants that were shaded for the morning or afternoon by trees When properly established, Drosera linearis thrives in a wide range of temperatures and humidities and is not adversely affected by any extreme. Drosera linearis will survive hot muggy weather without much relief in the evening for days or even weeks and still bear its white flowers and glistening tentacles. It also does not mind cool, dry weather after the passage of a cold front. For the planting medium I prefer marl over milled peat-sand mixtures. The short root system anchors better in marl. I can conceive growing the plants in milled peat-sand mixture in a greenhouse with this system if the still will work there. Milled peat spatters in the rain, and I do not care for seeing peat particles sticking to the Sundew’s leaves. Any evidence of moss growth indicates the total nutrient concentration of the medium is too high for D linearis. Marl is rot- proof so that there is no chance of nutrients being released by fungus or by any insect that abandons it when it finds it inedible. The only disadvantage with marl (calcium carbonate) is that it is slightly soluble in distilled water. This means adding marl to the culture once in a great while. This basic apparatus with modifications might be useful for Heliamphora which also grows in a nutrient-purged habitat. (Ed. Note. In a North American marl bog, the soil substrata is not pure marl (calcium carbonate) except possibly in the upper 1-2 mm. The “marl soil" is actually a mixture of marl, peat and sand in varying proportions). D. linearis in cultivation. Volume 18, December 1989 123 D linearis in habitat growing in shallow water. Wildlife in North Carolina 53:10-16. This article by staff writer Earley (excellent color photos by staff photographer Ken Taylor) discusses boglands in the North Carolina mountains primarily, but does also refer briefly to 124 Carnivorous Plant Newsletter piedmont bogs, particularly in this reviewer's old home of Iredell County (see comment below). The main thrust of the article is frustration of two ecologists trying to solve the riddle of why the bogs are declining so rapidly, and trying to classify them and determine why certain species favor one bog over another. The bogs of the northern North Carolina mountains are devoid of CP. Between these bogs and those of the southwest counties (where Sarracenia rubra ssp . jonesii and Drosera rotundifolia are found) is a break area at least two counties wide where no bogs are recorded. While peat and sphagnum are predominant, these are not the typical sphagnum bogs of the northeast or midwest in that they are fed by groundwater and more typically fit the definition of a modified fen. All are on seep slopes. Aside from rapid disappearance due to farm pond and golf course water hazard conversion, along with drainage and building of factories, apartment complexes and shopping centers, those bogs undisturbed are also rapidly becoming “shrubbed in.” (Reviewer’s note — In addition to mountain bogs, the best of the Iredell County bogs, well known to this reviewer, was also mentioned. 1 had the opportunity of following this bog closely for fourteen years, during which the central pond containing the rare bog turtle, and surrounding open sphagnous/peat area, gradually dried and shrubs and trees crept in along the margins. My observations indicate that primarily a fall in the water table as well as absence of natural clearing events such as fire, contributed to the bog’s demise. The present ecologists of the article found the bog — now twenty years since I first saw it — totally in shrub and trees with only frail, scattered etiolated pitcher plants scattered about. The author of the article did not mention water table decline primarily and strongly enough in my opinion, both in the mountains and piedmont. Also, the species of sphagnum in any bog and disbursement flow patterns during the uplift likely account for disparity of species from bog to bog). DES NELSON, E. CHARLES. 1986. As a result of ignoring these publications, incorrect typification and credit were given by American authors. The two hybrids were originally produced artificially. The hybrid S. flava L. x S. leucophylla Raf. is correctly designated S v moorei Masters rather than S. x mooreana Veitch. A neotype is designated. S. x popei Masters is correctly named but the previous neotype is not acceptable so a lectotype is designated. DES WISSE, DAVID F. 1989. Michigan’s meat-eating plants. Michigan Natural Resources Magazine 58:34-39. This is a popular article with the information level at beginner’s. However, it is well-written at that level with accurate information and none of the cuteness that tends to ruin such articles. Of main interest to more experienced CP enthusiasts is the seven color photos of Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea (3), Drosera rotundifolia( 1), Pinguicula vulgaris ( 1 ), Utricularia vulgaris ( 1 ) and a general bog scene. ZAMUDIO, SERGIO. 1988. Dos nuevas especies de Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) del centra y none de Mexico. Acta Botanica Mexicana 3:21-28. In Spanish. The author describes two new species from Mexico: Pinguicula crassifolia and P gracilis. Both species are quite disjunct from each other as well as P. macrophylla which the author defends as being different from P. crassifolia. P. gracilis is a rather small plant with a white flower, and there is extensive discussion of ecologic differences as well. The paper includes a province dot map and two excellent line drawing plates, one dedicated to each new species.
