A Few Hints on the Culture of Dahlias

HE Dahlia will thrive and give an abundance of bloom by giving ordinary garden care, and will repay for any extra cultivation.

Prepare the soil by plowing or digging the ground as deep as possible, working in some sheep manure or bone meal. Plant the bulbs in hills or drills, about five or six inches deep, laying the tuber flat on its side, with “eye,” or sprout up. The Dahlia is essentially a Fall flower, so we think it is better to plant during the month of June, so that the best flowers will come during September and October, and by planting late the plants will not exhaust themselves by early blooming. Cultivate constantly, to conserve the moisture and keep weeds down. When the plant is six or eight inches high, pinch out the top, which will throw the strength back into the plant, and cause it to grow into a bush, producing more and better flowers. It is well to stake up the plants, to keep them from breaking down during storms, and this will also give the garden a better appearance. If you prefer large flowers to quantity, it is best to disbud them when the buds are quite small, leaving the largest one on each stem.

Gladioli

LADIOLI have come to be accepted as the most satisfactory of the summer flowering bulbs. Their price is within the reach of every garden

maker and the ease with which they are grown as- sures success to all. If cut when the first flower opens, their mission seems to be to pour out more and more of the hidden wealth and beauty they em- body, as the flower stalk expands and opens up.

CULTURE

Bulbs can be planted any time after the ground is open in the spring. They should be set upright in drills or holes and covered from four to six inches deep, according to the nature of the soil. To have a succession of flowers, it is a good plan to divide the bulbs and make several plantings dur- ing the season about two or three weeks apart. Cultivate well and keep free from weeds.

Peonies

HE best time of the year to plant Peonies is during September and October. Give them a good location, free from the roots of large trees

and shrubs. Prepare the ground by deep digging, adding some bone meal or wood ashes. To get the best results do not cover the eyes more than three inches deep. It takes a Peony root about three years to become fully established so that it. will bear its finest flowers.
