University of Illinois Library APR 9 AUG 1 7 264 L161 — H41 CATALOGUE OF TYPE SPECIMENS OF FISHES IN CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM MARION GREY FIELDIANA: ZOOLOGY VOLUME 32, NUMBER 3 Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM JUNE 27, 1947 CATALOGUE OF TYPE SPECIMENS OF FISHES IN CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM MARION GREY Associate, Division of Fishes FIELDIANA: ZOOLOGY VOLUME 32, NUMBER 3 Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM JUNE 27, 1947 THE LIBRARY w »*• JUL211947, PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM PRESS INTRODUCTION The list recorded in this catalogue comprises all types, cotypes, and paratypes of fishes in the reference collection of Chicago Natural History Museum. About one-third of these types came from the collections of Central American fresh-water fishes described by Meek, and the Panama fishes described by Meek and Hilde- brand. The types of the fresh- water species in the Panama collection are deposited in Chicago Natural History Museum, and the types of marine forms are in the United States National Museum. Paratypes of both marine and fresh-water species were divided equally between the two institutions. A few type specimens in Dr. Meek's material either cannot be found or cannot be determined, and some of the paratypes are accompanied by contradictory labels. A careful attempt has been made to straighten out the Museum records, but an apology is advanced here for errors of omission or commission. The Museum collection also contains a scale from the type speci- men of Latimeria chalumnae Smith, recently acquired through the kindness of Dr. J. L. B. Smith of Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. The scale comes from the lower side of the caudal peduncle between the anal base and the anterior principal ventral caudal rays. Species are listed in alphabetical order. The name of each species is recorded as it was given in the original description, followed by a reference to the place and date of its publication. The current name is preceded by the sign of equality (=). The Chicago Natural History Museum catalogue number of the type specimen is followed by the locality. The data for parafypes and the number contained in the Museum collection are also given. In the case of defective specimens the condition has been stated, but no mention has been made of broken caudal fin tips. A number of species not previously figured are illustrated in the present paper. Lines under figures represent one inch. The drawings are the work of Peggy Collings Brown. Thanks are due to the following people: Mr. Karl P. Schmidt, without whose encouragement this list would never have been 109 110 FIELDIANA: ZOOLOGY, VOLUME 32 • completed; Mr. Alfred C. Weed, who segregated most of the types and paratypes during his twenty-one years as Curator of the Division of Fishes, and who has been kind enough to read the manuscript and to offer suggestions; Dr. S. F. Hildebrand, who has given both material assistance and generous advice; Mr. Loren P. Woods, who has made helpful suggestions; and Mr. Isaac Ginsburg, Dr. Reeve M. Bailey, Mr. John T. Nichols, Dr. Leonard P. Schultz, Dr. W. M. Chapman, Dr. George S. Myers, Dr. A. W. Herre, Dr. Carl L. Hubbs, and Dr. E. S. Herald, who have supplied information on various specimens. I also wish to express my gratitude to Miss Pearl Sonoda and Mrs. Peggy Collings Brown for help with innumerable routine details. Eigenmann's original description of this species was based on one of three specimens reported by Meek (Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Zool. Ser., 7, p. 145, 1907) as Astyanax oerstedii Kroyer. In 1921 (Mem. Mus. Comp. Zool., 43, pt. 3, p. 290) Eigenmann published a more detailed account of the species, mentioning the type and a paratype (both F.M.N.H. No. 6241) and four addi- GREY: TYPE SPECIMENS OF FISHES 121 tional specimens. Of these fishes only the type, the specimen on which Eigenmann based his report in 1908, belongs to the original lot that Meek identified as A. oerstedii. The so-called para type and the specimen from Siguiares (F.M.N.H. No. 6361) were originally identified by Meek as A.aeneus. Meek (Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Zool. Ser., 10, p. 106, 1914) afterwards re-iden- tified one of these as albeolus. The other three specimens from Chitaria, named by Eigenmann in 1921 as A. albeolus (F.M.N.H. No. 6267) were listed later by him as Bryconamericus peruanus ricae (?.».). Of Meek's original specimens, the only A. oerstedii entered in our cata- logue is No. 6022, the specimen from Turrialba, not mentioned by Eigen- mann either in 1908 or in 1921 and so, presumably, never sent to him. The specimen catalogued as No. 6241 agrees with the original description of the type. Some confusion in this entry is evident, but it is now impossible to clarify the record. These specimens are accompanied by a variety of labels, some of them contradictory as to number of specimens, date, or locality. Catalogue entries for these numbers are also somewhat confusing, In his original description Meek states only that the species is based on specimens, 120-140 mm. in length, from the Virginia River. The ten specimens from Zent are evidently paratypes, in spite of Dr. Meek's published statement that the species was known only from Victoria. He stated that he had eleven specimens from that locality, collected April 13, 1912. The original label, in his handwriting, lists one (the type) from Victoria, and ten from Zent. It seems probable that these eleven specimens are the ones he had in hand when he wrote the original description. [A. C. WEED] Cichlasoma tenue Meek Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Zool. Ser., 7, p. 94, 1906. We have a specimen, No. 7734, accompanied by a typewritten label reading "Cichlasoma tuba(l) Paratype(?)." A tag sewed on the fish reads "7734, Victoria, Costa Rica, Meek, April 13, 1912." Three-quarters of one side of the specimen has been dissected away and the tip of the caudal is broken. Its standard length is 129 mm. Since Meek published the type length as 222 mm., this specimen is probably not the type, nor can we determine now why it was thought to be a paratype, since the name C. tuba does not appear on the tag. The type was entered in the catalogue as No. 7681, the published number (7581) being a misprint. Cichlasoma tuyrense Meek and Hildebrand Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Zool. Ser., 10, p. 89, 1913.
