The number éefore the name of a species or a subspecies indicates that it is mentioned in the appendix. The numbers which /od/ow the name of a group of islands indicate the different islands belonging to that group on which the species referred to has been taken; for example, Dendrotca dominica, Bahama Islands, 1-5, would mean that Dendroica dominica occurs in the Bahama Islands and has been recorded from Great Bahama and Eleuthera. Following this plan we separate the West Indies into three somewhat natural divisions or groups, in each of which the Islands are numbered as follows : — BAHAMA ISLANDS. 1, Great Bahama; 2, Abaco; 3, Biminis; 4, Berry Islands; 5, Eleuthera; 6, New Providence; 7, Andros; 8, San Salvador or Cat Island; 9, Exuma Keys; 10, Great Exuma; 11, Little Exuma; 12, Conception Island; 13, Watling’s Island; 14, Rum Cay; 15, Long Island; 16, Samana or Atwood’s Cay; 17, Crooked Island; 18, Fortune Island; 19, Green Cay; 20, Acklin Island; 21, Plana Cays; 22, Maraguna; 23, Miraporvos; 24, Great Ragged Island; 25, North Caicos; 26, Grand Caicos; 27, East Caicos; 28, Turks’ Island; 29, Little Inagua; 30, Great Inagua; 31, Cay Sal; 32, Anguilla (Bahamas); 33, San Domingo Cay; 34, At Sea. CHARLES BAGCORY. DEPARTMENT OF Birps, MusEUM OF THE BosTON SOCIETY or Natura. History, OcroBeER 1, 1892. INTRODUCTION. N preparing the present work it was found that much material for comparison was needed from a number of islands to satisfactorily determine the geographical distribution of many species. To obtain these the writer personally made three trips to the West Indies, and several trained collectors were sent to different islands to procure the needed specimens. All of the islands of any size, from the Bahamas to Tobago, which had not previously been collected upon, were visited and more or less thoroughly explored. Much valuable material was gathered together in this way, my private collection alone containing between fourteen and fifteen thousand specimens from the West Indian Islands, representing nearly all of the known forms, some of them in large series. In addition to my own collection, I have carefully examined the West Indian birds in the museum of the Boston Society of Natural History, which contains among other rarities a fine specimen of the Ava fricolor from Cuba. Some of the insular species are fast disappearing, which at one time were comparatively abundant. The Jamaica Petrel (4strelata caribea) is now claimed by some of the inhabitants of the island to be entirely extinct. The disappearance of this bird may be attributed to the introduction of the Mongoose (Herpestes), which animal, it is claimed, is proving very destructive to the bird life on many of the islands. It is very probable that several species have become extinct during the present century, for very little was known about West Indian ornithology up to the year 1850 and even later. How little, is shown by an able paper published in 1847 by Dr. Hartlaub, in which he gives a most interesting account of the work done up to that time. 8 INTRODUCTION. we Wallace, in his “ Distribution of Animals*,” states that no less than six species of parrots were said to have been formerly found in Guadeloupe and Martinique ; but at the present time not a single species of that family is known to inhabit either of those islands. Ledru, in his “ Voyage aux iles Teneriffe, La Trinite, St. Thomas,” etc., published in Paris in r8rot, mentions several birds which are now unknown, among them a green pigeon from St. Thomas. A species of Ps¢/facus is included in a manuscript lst of Guadeloupe birds compiled by Dr. L’Herminier about the year 1844. This list was first published by Mr. George N. Lawrence in the proceedings of the United States National Museum for 1878. There are at the present time 293 known species and subspecies of birds which are peculiar to the West Indies, comprising 107 genera. Of these the Bahamas possess 25 peculiar species and subspecies of 18 genera, the Greater Antilles, including the Caymans, Virgin Islands and St. Croix, have 149 species and races peculiar to them belonging to So genera, and the Lesser Antilles, com- prising all the islands from Sombrero south to Grenada and Barbados, have 53 peculiar species and subspecies of 27 genera. There are 38 genera peculiar to the West Indies, of these one is peculiar to the Bahamas, 24 peculiar to the Greater Antilles, and eight to the Lesser Antilles. * Wallace, “ Distribution of Animals,” vol. 2, p. 67, 1876. The species prob- ably does not occur in the West Indies. Dr. Gundlach writes me that it is not found in Cuba. (123) 124 BIRDS OF THE WEST INDIES. 9. BUCCO CAYENENSIS. This supposed species was given by Mr. Salle in his list of San Domingo birds, P. Z. S., 1857, p. 234; but he does not remember the bird which he identified as that species, and it passed out of his hands many years ago. In 1889, when in Paris, | asked him if he remembered the speci- men; but he could not do so and did not know what had become of it. Brisson refers to a Bucco cayenensis and a Bucco cayenensis navius (Vol. IV., Plate 7, Figs. 1, 4, pp- 95,97), and Buffon (Hist. Nat. des Oiseau planches enluminées, Plate 206, Fig. 2) gives Bacco cayenensis in the letterpress, ? but calls it “ Barbu de St. Domingue” on the plate. ‘The plate shows the San Domingo bird to differ from the continental form, and seems to represent a species of Cafzéo and not a Lucco ; but there isno known species of Capito in San Domingo. Sclater, in the Catalogue of the Birds of the Brit. Museum, Vol. XIX., gives “ Barbu de St. Domingo” as a synonym of Cafiéo niger with a query André Pierre Ledru, in Voyage aux iles de Ténériffe, La Trinité, St. Thomas, Sainte Croix et Porto Rico (Paris, 1810), gives Bucco cayenensts, var. B. from Porto Rico, calling it Le samata de Saint Domingue, Vol. 2, p. 201, and refers to Planche enlum. Plate 206, Fig. 2. We know of no species from San Domingo which at all resembles Buffon’s plate. 10. TYRANNUS SULPHURASCEUS Wurrr. An undetermined species, the whereabouts of the type of which is unknown. It is probable that several Cuban species may occur on these islands, and perhaps one or two novelties to reward the naturalist who would systematically explore them. Eleuthera, San Salvador, and Watling’s Island have not been as thoroughly investigated as we could wish. The large island of Inagua has been visited by at least a dozen collectors, and as there are no pine woods in the interior it is probable that very littke remains to be done on that island. We know at the present time twenty-five species and subspecies of birds which are peculiar to the Bahama Islands. ‘They are as follows : — GREAT BAHAMA ISLAND. MELANERPES BAHAMENSIS. Cory. ABACO. MELANERPES BLAKEI Ripeway. ELEUTHERA. SPINDALIS ZENA STEJNEGERI Cory. GEOTHLYPIS CORYI Ripeway. WATLING’S ISLAND. MELANERPES NYEANUS Ripcway. INAGUA. MIMUS POLYGLOTTUS ELEGANS Snarpe. DORICHA LYRURA. All of the large islands which comprise this group have been more or less carefully explored ; but undoubtedly much yet remains to be learned regarding their avifauna. The birds of Cuba are quite well known, thanks to the energy and ability cf Dr. Gundlach ; but some portions of that island would still prove interesting to the naturalist. The rare Ara ¢ricolor still inhabits the Isle of Pines, although it has practically disappeared from the mainland, and Agelatus assimilis also occurs there. The Cayman Islands have been very well explored. Most of the species peculiar to this group are confined to the wooded portions of Grand Cayman, and some of them are even now comparatively rare. Jamaica is better known ornithologically than almost any other West Indian Island. The island of Haiti and San Domingo has not been well explored. ‘The country to the northwest of San Domingo City, known as the San Juan country, is practically unknown, and would probably well repay investigation. fo) 128 BIRDS OF THE WEST INDIES. Mona has no peculiar species, although at one time a Paroquet was described from that island, which has since proved to be the San Domingo form. Porto Rico has been but partially explored ornithologically, and much yet remains to be done in the interior. The islands of Culebra and Vieque are practically unknown as far as their avifauna is concerned, although it is probably the same as in Porto Rico, The islands of St. Thomas, St. John, Portola, Virgin Gorda, and Anegada, have been well explored, as has also St Croix. There are one hundred and forty-nine species and subspecies of birds belonging to eighty genera which are peculiar to the Greater Antilles. They are as follows :— CUBA.
