. ■ NEWSLETTER tsing un ___ VOLUME XXXI SUMMER-FALL, 1985 NUMBER 2 & 3 NEW OFFICERS ELECTED AT ANNUAL MEETING Officers elected at the annual meet- ing of the Carolina Bird Club held May 11, 1985 at Winston-Salem, NC were: JOHN WATSON, Southern Pines, NC, President; MARCIA PERDUE, Arden, NC, Secretary; ZACK BYNUM, Winston-Salem, NC, Treasurer; CHRIS MARSH, Myrtle Beach, SC, Vice-Presitent-SC DR. KEITH BILDSTEIN, Rock Hill, SC, Member at Large-SC; STEVE COX, Greenville, SC, Member at Large-SC. A revision of the CBC By-laws was adopted with minor changes. However, the provisions of Article IV which increase the terms of several officers from one year to two years was delayed for one year since the nominees had not been advised of the proposed changes when agreeing to serve. Left to right: John Watson, Zack Bynum, The Winston-Salem meeting was not Marcia Perdue, and Steve Cox limited to business as the host Audubon Society of Forsyth County had planned an outstanding program. We all know about parasitism involving Brown-headed Cowbirds leaving their eggs in the nests of other species, but we were surprised to learn from Dr. Patricia Gowaty that the aggressive behavior of female Eastern Bluebirds may be because they are trying to prevent other females of their own species from mating with their mates and laying the adulterous eggs in their nest. The extensive banding and genetic studies conducted were very impressive. Equally impressive was the slide illustrated program on the history, people and animals of Amboseli Park, Kenya given by Dr. Jeffrey Walters. One of the best Winston-Salem birding areas, Tanglewood Park, was preempted on Satur- day by a steeplechase, but excellent birding in other areas turned up 117 species for the .day. Many of us also got to see the famous "dump" where Ramona Snavely sees her rarities. ! ! ! FALL MEETING IN BOONE ! ! ! See you in Boone! PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE When I took office at the spring meeting in Winston-Salem, I mentioned that the Carolina Bird Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 1987. Feeling that we should observe this event in some special way, I asked for suggestions for this observance. Already I have had several fine suggestions and now would like to invite all who were not at the Winston-Salem meeting to send me ideas for such a celebration. You may write to me at 208 Rob Roy Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387. Now to get to a matter which is giving me, and others, a great concern. The member- ship of the Club has fallen off rather markedly. For example, the paid memberships so far this year are less than 650, down from 1200-1300 just a few years ago. Compare this with the membership on the Club’s 10th anniversary of 700. There must be something we are either doing wrong or not doing at all, because we should be attracting many more members now than in 1947. I would appreciate comments on how we can improve ourselves in order to attain the membership we should have. Particularly, I would hope that some of our members who have been associated with clubs or ornithological societies in other states could give us new ideas . We need members not only to strengthen our club in terms of people but also to provide funds for the continued high publication standards of The Chat, publishing bird counts and other areas of interest to the membership from time to time. I urge you to express yourselves to me or to other members of the Executive Committee on this important matter. Looking forward to seeing you at Boone. ****** JOHN WATSON ****** MEET YOUR OFFICERS JOHN WATSON, President, was born and reared in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Duke University with a degree in chemistry and was employed in the textile industry for six years until World War II. John served in the Navy and was discharged as a Lieutenant. Taking a new direction, John and his wife, Libba, went to Boston where he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and served as soloist in several area churches. However, in a couple of years John gave up an operatic career and returned to North Carolina where he became a hospital administrator for the next 30 years until retirement in January, 1984. John and Libba are active in the Moore County Bird Club and became involved in CBC when a meeting was held in Southern Pines in 1975. He has previously served as Treasurer of CBC. John continues his interest in music as a soloist and past president of the Moore County Choral Society. John and Libba now make their home in Southern Pines, NC. MARCIA P. PERDUE, Secretary, lives in Arden, NC with her husband Miller. She is a graduate of East Tennessee State University (B.S.) and Western Carolina University (M.S.). Marcia is employed as an Instructional Resource Person for the Chapter I Reading Program in the Henderson County elementary schools. She is active in the Blue Ridge Bird Club in Asheville and currently serves as their co-program chairperson. ZACHARY T. BYNUM, JR., Treasurer, is a native and resident of Winston-Salem, NC. He grad- uated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served three years in the Navy during World War II. Zack married Flora Ann Lee of Raleigh, and they raised four children who are now grown and out on their own. A partner with the international accounting firs of Ernst & Whinney, Zack retired in 1982. He is a member and past president of the Audubon Society of Forsyth County. BIRDERS FLOCK TO JORDAN Birders from all over North Carolina have been flocking to Jordan Lake in Chatham County, North Carolina since 32 Bald Eagles were reported in a census conducted by members of the New Hope Audubon Society and staff of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Melinda J. Welton, endangered species project leader for the NCWRC indicated that it was the largest number ever spotted in the state. Kathy Kuyper, president of New Hope Audubon, has been seeing good numbers on the lake for months but decided that it was time to get an accurate count after seeing six at one time while k^aking in June. The birds are believed to be temporary visitors from Florida. The recommended point for observing the birds is the NC Highway 751 bridge which crosses the Northeast Creek arm of the reservoir. Binoculars and preferably a scope are required. Membership Application and Order Form Name Address City State Zip.
