As a new feature of our newsletter we offer the following question and answer column for Carolina Bird Club members. Persons with questions about North or South Carolina birds can send them to the Newsletter editor. We are fortunate to have Ms. Uropygial to answer reader's questions. Ms. Uropygial is a North Carolina native and the author of three books (one of them was even about birds and one of the others may some day be published). If you don't have questions send answers and she will write the questions. Our column editor reserves the right to edit to the point that your questions may not be recognizable. Space does not allow for questions about Christmas or spring counts. Dear Ms. Uropygial: Everyone always wants to find a bold face bird. Well, I've looked everywhere for one and no soap. I can't even find them in my field guide. Still Hunting Dear Hunter: Bold faces are hard to find. The darn things are never where you expect 'em and almost always at an odd time of year. * * * Dear Ms. Uropygial: I don't have a Limpkin on my N.C. list. Where can I find one? 310 and Counting Dear Counting: You need a new list. The 1979 NC list has it on page 15. * & 5*C Dear Ms. Manners: For the last four years I have been putting dead cats and dogs out on my vulture feeder. Well, the problem is that I now have so many vultures (both species) coming to my feeders that I spend most of my time driving looking for road kills. My family life is going down hill and so is my gas budget. Any suggestions? Gassed out in Charlotte Dear Gassed: Even though you sent this to the wrong column, I will answer it anyway. Like most birds it is not necessary to feed them during the summer. Let them pay you back by catching bugs and insects. Dead animals found in the summer can be kept in your freezer until November. * * * Dear Ms. Uropygial: Which field guide is the best? I can't find anyone who agrees as to which one I should ’ A New Birder Dear Birder: Birders are no longer using field guides. Buy a life list and simply check off each bird as you see it. For North Carolina get a NC list, for North America I recommend the ABA Checklist, for Wednesdays get a Wednesday list, etc. •A. * * WATCH FOR MORE LETTERS TO MS. UROPYGIAL IN THE NEXT CBC NEWSLETTER FALL MEETING REPORT The Days Inn in the heart of the beautiful historic district of Savannah, GA was the gathering place for 130 CBC members January 31-February 2, 1986. Louise Lacoss of Hilton Head helped with refreshments and Libba Watson and Marcia Perdue did their usual super job with registration. Dr. Bradley Gottfried of Armstrong State College almost had his doctoral study ruined by nest predators. However, he turned adversity into further research on the responses of breeding birds to nest predation. He reported on the results of this interesting study on Friday night. Dr. Chris Marsh of Coastal Carolina College (Conway) took us on a birding tour of Oregon Saturday evening through slides and facinating commentary. The field trips on Saturday produced 142 species and a variety of adventures. One group was verbally assaulted by a local resident for walking through the dunes at Savannah beach. They had been directed on their route by Corps of Engineers personnel who were blasting on the beach. They also had to wonder a little bit about whether she had developed her envi- ronmental concern after her condo on the beach had been built. Another group at the Savannah NWR were treated to the sight of a beaver luring an alligator away from its home. Wonderful seafood, excellent birding, interesting historic area, and good friends made for an outstanding fall meeting. RARE BIRDS Did you hear about the Say's Phoebee near Lillington? No? Well, you haven't been check- ing the CBC Rare Bird Alert. The number is 704/875-2525. A quick summary of sightings is given at the beginning. Following the detailed reports opportunity is given for you to report on your sightings. For reports only you may call 704/875-6521 and Dick Brown or one of the Raptor Center volunteers will take your report. * * * ft * ft ft ft >'c ft ftftftft ********* ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftft REGISTRATION & RESERVATION FORM Carolina Bird Club Spring Meeting, May 9-11, 1986 (MUST BE RECEIVED BY HEADQUARTERS SECRETARY BY APRIL 28) NAME ( S )_ ADDRESS CITY STATE ZIP The charge of $40.75 per person per day includes accomodations and meals Friday dinner through Sunday lunch.
