The male nciiitalia have a shori. somewhat Imokeil uncus, a lonu.'. moderately
hroad. ratlier rect.aiisiular teiiumen with the valves broadly attai'hed r-o that the
liase of the costa is close to the li.ase of the siiiathos: the valve armature consists
of spines arisinu: from the apex of a thickened saccuhis: at times it i< asymmetri-
cal, the left liiinch of spines developing into a Ion;: rod-like, free-projecting strnc-
ure of varialile length even in the same species. The ha-e of the costa is clothed
with spine-like hairs, willi a tuft of lonu: fine hair arisinu,- from a projecting: area
near its ha-r. The siiiathos i> liroail v.ith a tendency for the lateral edye- to lie
produced into jioints; the aedoeayus is lonu. narrow, sharply pointed apically.
Hepresentatives of this ^eniis occur in practically every portion of North

The tteiiitalia are <iuite distinct from those of the I^astern species, the liarpe
consisting: of a very stronj; liwnch of spines symmetrically placed on hoth valves.
Ill coloration there is considcralile variatioii in the species, northern specimens
(Ketchikan. .Vlaska) and those from hi<:h southern a.titudes ('I'ulare Co.. ( "alif. )
heinn '|uite pale compared with Vancouver Island specimens which are con>ider-
ahly tinncil wi'li purple. Inland records of the species include P'riesl Hiver,

Mddiioliiphiii. the sacculus has lieen somewhat reduced and the liarpe consists
of a rounded raised patch of spines situated i;i a similar position to that of
Mrliniiiliiiiliia species: the jinatlios is liroad, rounded and scol>i|iate: the aeiloea-
Kus is armed either with a luindle of spines or wi,h a siiijile stout cornulus.

Members of this jieiius only occur in the South Western States anil prolialily
extend down iiiti) .Mexico. Nothimi is known of the early st;iu:es liul it is not
improlialile that the larvae will he found to feed on conifers.
