THE CURRANT GALL-MITE {Eriophyfs ribis Nalepa). T'iE currant gall-mite, or, as it is sometimes called, the "black currant bud-mite " or " big bud." was imported into the Province of British Columbia in loog on infested bushes from England and Scotland. Its presence was first reported to the Government in the spring of 191 5, and has since been observed in the neighbourhood of Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Station, Hillbank, Koksilah, Duncan. Somenos, Deerholme, Maple Bay, Quamichan. Westholme, and Chemainus— all points on Vancouver Island. During the early spring seasons of 1916 and 1917 a close inspection for the presence of the mite was made, resulting in a considerable number of infested black- currant bushes being uprooted and destroyed. This mite still exists at points between ^'ictoria and Nanaimo, in small quantity and at isolated points; hence every householder and fruit-grower should exercise the closest watch over currant-bushes, particularly black currants, for suspicious signs of its presence. If infestation is present or believed to be present in currant plantations at any point on the Island, such infested bushes should be immediately destroyed by burning. It is false economy to allow such bushes to remain in the ground to continue and distribute the infestation. The Importance of the Mite. All fruit-growers from Great Britain will recognize the importance of this pest. F. V. Theobald, Professor of Economic Zoology at the South-eastern Agricultural College, Wye, England, has stated that • (luring recent years the mite has become one of the worst pests with which the fruit-growers have to reckon ; the damage done is enormous, and no means of extermination has yet been found." I 1 Si , ti^t'"?'i^fA^u^'' ^"""'°" E"'°"'o'«P •• Ottawa, has stated that m England this mite is one of the most s,;rious fruit pests, and the damage it has done has been so great that the growing of black currants has been rendered impossible in some districts. Its rapid spread during recent years has been due to the fact that no reliable method of eradication has been discovered." i'i?iSrt!.?5r „°/ JJlll'=''_J?L-*.«'? currant^^all-mlte: , J— — -«"-«v"o "«. niiacK Dv me currAi (After th!^ i jI T^'t f^ "^^"^^^••y to emphasize the importance of this mite. It should be sufficient to request growers to exercise the greatest care and to assure themselves that their bushes and the bushes on vacant lots are free from infestation. Symptoms of Attack. The presence of the mite is most easily observed on infested bushes m the early spring, in March. April, .nd May, before the leaves develop. Individual mites are approximately y.oo inch in length, and they occur in large numbers, often in countless numbers, in the unopened or opening buds. The irritation caused to the tender plant- tissues within the bud produces an abnormal swelling and a premature bursting; whence the common name "big bud" fs given for this affection. If such abnormally swollen buds are cut open with a knife the mites become apparent to the naked eye as minute white specks capable of slow movement. 2 Infestation may be spread from bush to bush or from plantation t< plantation by propagation of cuttings, by wind, by human agencies, b\ insect visitors, by cultivation, and by direct migration of the mite itself. Currants of all varieties, including particularly the Baldwin. Black Xaples, Black Dutch, Lee's Prolific, Carter's Champion, Boskjop Giant, are liable to attack. It is possible also that a native shrub for British Columbia, Ribes bracteosum, may become infested— a ix)ssibility which makes it essentially desirable that growers take proiwr steps to eradicate the mite. Conclusion and Recommendation. Watch the bursting buds of currants in the early spring. Examine carefully buds showing a degree of abnormal swelling. If small white mites are observed within the buds, destroy the plant immediately. Doubtful cases should be submitted to the Department of Agriculture. Victoria, B.C., issued March, igtS.
