Baone, P.R.5 MOST ZEALOUS PROMOTERS OF EVERY LAUDABLE ATTEMPT TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF NATURE; THIS DESCRIPTION OF THE MINUTE AND RARE SHELLS, LAITELTLY BIS COVERED ERN eee SEA QUASTIOF SANDWICH, AND ODHER AD LOINING PARTSIN THE COUNTY OF KENT: IN TRSIDLMONY OF AN HEART-FELT GRATITUDE FOR THE VERY OBLIGING ATTENTION AND GENEROSITY THEY HAVE BEEN PLEASED TO BESTOW Wee hts, PaO AT LON; IS MOST HUMBLY DEDICATED BY THEIR EVER DEVOTED, AND MOST OBEDIENT SERVANT, GEO. WALKER. THE INIRODUGTION HE firft difcovery of the curious minute Shells, exhibited in this i5 collection, originates with that inquifitive naturalft William Boys, Efq; F. S. A. of Sandwich, in the county of Kent; who, by his unremitting refearches into the works of Nature, was happily induced to examine with his glaffes the Sand of the adjoining fhore, whereby he di(- covered a confiderable number of minute Shcils, altogether new to him, lodged therein. Information of this having been communicated to my worthy friend, Edward Jacob, Efq; F.S. A. Mr. Boys was earneftly preffed by him to profecute the difcovery, with the offer of procuring affiftance in the purfuit, if his other neceflary avocations would not permit him to employ it fo clofely as Mr. Jacob wifhed: The propofal being readily accepted by Mr. Boys, Mr. Jacob was pleafed to make an offer of the employment to me, which I entered upon moft willingly ; and, upon receiving feveral parcels of Sand from Mr. Boys, I purfued the following method in examining them :— Firft, I placed ímall portions of it when dry under Dr. Withering's botanical Microfcope, in order to feparate the Shells from the Sand, and afterwards: proceeded to enlarge every fingle Shell with the greater magnifiers of Cuff's. Microfcope for opaque objects, and Wilfon’s pocket one ;. and by thefe aids. I drew them as exhibited in the plates. And: INTRODUCTION. ii And here it may not be unacceptable to inform future Inquirers that, in order to facilitate the more eafy difcovery of thefe minute objects, after the Sand was perfectly dry, I put a handful on an open fheet of paper, and gently fhook it from fide to fide, by which means, the minute Shells being lighter than the fand, were feparated from and lay above it, and were thereby much more expeditioufly procured, than by any other means I could think of. It is alfo advifeable to place the objects for infpection in a fituation where no fudden blaft of air can come, otherwife, being very light, they may be unexpectedly blown away, as I have too frequently experienced thereby the lofs of feveral rare fpecimens ; indeed a carelefs breathing or cough, while they were under examination, hath been attended with the fame difagreeable accident. I beg leave to obferve to Gentlemen, efpecially to thofe who have read Flancus's treatife, that, although the Sand of our coaft contains fo great a variety of fpecimens, yet it is by no means fo productive as the Sand at Rimino, leaft, defpairing of fuccefs in their firft trials, they may be induced to lay afide their further inquiries ; they cannot fail however of finding fome of the moft common in every parcel of it. The undertaking to make the enlarged drawings by the Microfcope exact, from my want of practice, and the fmallnefs of the objects, was a matter of more difficulty than I was aware of, and required much time and patience to overcome.——-Perfeverance however hath enabled me to reprefent the objects, not only to the fatisfaction of my two worthy friends, Mr. Jacob and Mr. Boys, but alfo of that moft noble Lady her Grace the Dutchefs Dowager of Portland, who hath been pleafed to accept of feveral of the minute Shells here engraved, and whofe generous approbation and affiftance in this publication can never be forgotten: without the higheft ingratitude. To this noble patronage I am happy to add, that of the very refpectable and con- fummate naturalift Sir Jofeph Banks, Bart. Prefident of the Royal Society, who hath condefcended, not only to compare the drawings with a confiderable number i INTRODUCTION. number of the Shells here exhibited, but alfo to approve, and very generoufly to promote the undertaking, for which fingular favors I can never be fuffi- ciently thankful. The approbation of two fuch very eminent perfonages, I flatter myfelf, cannot fail to enfure a favourable reception of my endeavours from every curi- ous admirer of the wonderful works of our benificent CREATOR! efpecially thofe of our own ifland, as fo large a number of Shells, heretofore unknown, are hereby added to the Britifh Conchology, fufficient to fhew the path is now laid open, and made eafy for (till greater difcoveries to be made by inquifitive naturalifts, in the different parts of the kingdom. Whata number of minute Shells, equal to a moiety of the engraved Englifh feries, hath now been di(- covered in fmall quantities of Sand from an inconfiderable part of our coafts ! Surely this is encouragement, and will be an inducement to Gentlemen of a philofophical turn of mind occafionally to employ their leifure hours in fimilar refearches ; nor can they fail of making difcoveries that will amply repay them for their inquiries. Indeed it is fomewhat furprifing, that the Authors of our own country, who have fo advantageoufly applied the Microfcope to a variety of objects of the animal kingdom, fhould totally have neglectél to examine the fhores of our own feas, crouded as they are with objects, equally worthy their attention, and yet it has not been for want of hints. The account of the minute and rare Shells difcovered at Rimino, on the coaft of the Adriatic Sea, was publifhed by Plancus in the year 1739 ; and Mr. Paker's obfervation, in page 244, of his treatife on the Microfcope, publifhed in the year 1742, deferved more attention than has been paid to it. Shell filh, fays he, ** Are objects that have as yet been very flightly examined by * the Microfcope, and therefore the ferious imquirer into Nature's fecret ** operations may here be certain of difcovering beauties, which at prefent ** he can have no conception of." But thus it is, Nature opens her rich and inexhauftible treafures flowly and cradually to the inquifitive mind of man. The fa& is, different obfervers 1 have LN T,RO.DUCG.T.ION; iv have generally different purfuits, otherwife thefe objects would fcarcely have efcaped the attention of many other Gentlemen, as well as of the quick- fighted Mr. Ellis, a juftly celebrated Author, who hath fo clearly inveftigated and defcribed the corals and corallines of the adjoining coafts. To Mr. BOY'S, all praife is juftly due from every lover of natural fcience, for his happy and fuccefsful inveftigation of this part of our natural hiftory, which hath fo long continued unexplored. Being anxious of adding (till more to this elegant collection, than the Sand from Sandwich had afforded, I have examined the fediments of various parts of the fhores, from thence up to Faverfham, and the ifle of Shepey, as well as the banks of frefh water ftreams and ditches, the boggy places, and the woods in this neighbourhood, whereby very. confiderable additions have been made, which are noticed in the explanatory index. When the drawings were finifhed, there remained an almoft infurmountable difficulty in my properly arranging and defcribing the Shells ; thro’ my fmall acquaintancewith Conchology, neverthelefs this was overcome, by the obliging affiftance of my antient friend Mr. Jacob, who always willing to inftruct me in my weak refearches in natural hiftory, moft kindly engaged in the tafk, tho’ fo liable to cenfure. The Claffification is agreeable to that of the greateft illuminator of natural hiftory the Sun ever fhone upon the illuftrious Linneus however, in a retrograde couríe; as that feemed more fuitable to this collection—if the defcriptions fhould be deemed fomewhat imperfect, and not fafficiently clear, a reference may be had, for further fatisfaction, to the engravings, which may be depended upon as very exact copies of the originals, altho’ fo much enlarged. Their natural fize may be known by the fmall figures at the bottom or on the fide of each enlarged fpecimen; and where there is no mark or minute figure fubjoined, that is of the real fize or notice, will be taken of the omiffion in the index. The v INTRODUCTION. The afligning adequate trivial names to the fhells, except in a few inftances, hath been omitted, through the fear of giving fuch as might any way inter- fere with thofe already given by Linnzus, to Shells of the fame kinds, the principal aim has been to give concife and accurate defcriptions of them ; how they may be approved, is fubmitted to the public. As it is an allowed difficulty to determine where one clafs of Shells ends, and another begins, a liberty is taken of placing all the compreffed Snails under the title HELIX, and thofe with a produced clavicle, whether lefs or more, and whether the aperture be. round or oval, or tending to either form, under the title T U R BO, which it is hoped will be pardoned by the Critics in Conchology. It having been fuggefted that many of thefe Shells may prove to be the fry of fhells heretofore publifhed, great care hath been taken to obviate that idea, feveral fpecimens fufpected to be fuch, have therefore been laid afide for future inveftigation. The Author begs leave to inform his readers, that he will continue his refearches ; and if he fhould be fo fuccefsful as to procure a fufficient num- ber of Shells for another plate, it fhall be publifhed feparately, as an appendix, to accommodate the prefent purchafers, without putting them again to the expence of the whole: And that he fhall think himfelf much obliged to any Gentleman who will favour him with any minute Shells here unnoticed, with an account where difcovered, or any other obfervations tending to illuftrate this part of our natural hiftory FAVERSHAM, GEO.
