NEWS FROM INDIVIDUALS ARNE ANDERBERG, Institute of Botany, University of Stockholm, S-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden, is working on revisions of the genera Grantia, Hirschia and Iphiona (Inmuleae - Inulinae), and making morphological and taxonomic studies of Inula grantioides and Pulicaria phillipsiae. BOOK REVIEW SYSTEMATIC BOTANY MONOGRAPHS: VOLUME 1, TAXONOMY OF LYGODESMIA (ASTURACHAN), by A. Spencer Tomb. American Society of Plant Taxonomists, 1980. Synantherologists (and of course others) now possess a mass of data enabling virtually a cell by cell account of each organ of a plant under study to be siven. For example, the pappus of members of the tribe Lactuceae has characters which may be described and illustrated, such as the number, arrangement and heterogeneity of tne oristles, their composition in terms of numbers of cells in cross-section, the shape and size and direction of lateral projections on those cells and the manner of deniscence or breakage of the bristles; or corollas may be treated as to their 3-dimensional cell structure, the reflection and absorption spectra of the pigments and walls of each vart of the petal, and so on. This maximal information is available (because of time and expense) only to the mono- grapher but is often significant to the biolegy and classification of the plants. ‘The transfer of this information via the printed page in recent times has become a compromise between exhaustive and expensive descriptive monographs and a formal taxonomic treatment of nomenclature, keys and descriptions. The present work, the first in a new series of botanical monographs, takes a middle coursee It incorporates a comprehensive revision with keys, descriptions, drawings, distribution maps, cited specimens and comments on ecology and pollination biology. This will provide users with an excellent guide to the genus as well as insight into its relationships within the tribe. In addition to this it picks out particular characters such as karyotypes, pollen morphology and pappus structure for detailed presentation, while casting a briefer glance over corollas and achenes. The result is a volume of very manageable size, attractively printed, with photographs reproduced satisfactorily on the same paper as the text. A few misprints were spotted, and a reference missing from the bibliography, but these points do not detract from the competence of the taxonomic revision and the satisfaction of having another small part of c 20 the still poorly known tribe Llactuceae presented in an authoritative fashione FeGe DAVIES ARTICLE GENERIC NAMES OF COMPOSITAE C.
