Key to System of Hive Numbers.

For the convenience of our customers, we have used for a-number of years a system whereby the wording
of hive orders is greatly simplified and the liability of error lessened. Each hive and part of a hive is known by a
certain letter or number, and any combination of hives may easily be designated by the proper group of letters
and numbers. In ordering and billing goods this saves a great amount of writing. For instance, suppose a cus-
tomer desires to order five ten-frame hives with old-style % inch bottom board, metal-roof cover, and metal bound
super-cover, with frames having foundation for one-inch starters, a super with inside fixtures complete, taking
4x5x1% sections and one-inch foundation starters, the item would~be ‘‘5BRc64M—10.""_ If, instead of the old-style
bottom, he wanted the Danzenbaker bottom it would be “SARc64M—10.””

, In most cases the letter is suggested by the name of the article for which it stands, while in some itis simply
arbitrary. Forinstance: B for bottom, C for combination, C for cover, D for Danzenbaker, EK for Excelsior,
F for flat, G for gable, P for plain, S for slotted, W for winter, etc. he great majority will easily understand
the numbering scheme, and will be saved a lot of unnecessary labor in describing what they wish to order, while
those who do not understand it do not need to use it. ' They may describe the articles wanted if they prefer to do
so.. In the table of prices we describe each hive as regularly furnished, giving the designating letters and figures
in the first column to the right. If you wantsome other kind of cover or bottom than the regular style, change
‘the letter in the regular designating numbers to the one which stands for your choice: as shown in the example

above. .

We take great pleasure in presenting this 57th annual price list of Bees, Queens, and Bee-
keepers’ supplies ; the goods offered you in this and the accompanying 64 page catalog of Root’s
‘Goods for 1917 will completely supply your wants for the season at very reasonable prices if
you consider quality and our facilities for serving you, which is unequalled. By carefully read-
ing these catalogs you will find if yow are not already posted in progressive Bee-keeping, much
that will be to you both instructive and interesting. We handle Root’s goods in car lots which
enables us to offer these goods at manufacturers’ prices ; this makes a saving to the purchaser
in time and transportation charges, and entitles you to the best that money can buy.

BEES. Ofall the different races of bees yet brought to America there are none that can
equal the Italians. In 1860 Wm. W. Cary, Sr., went to Flushing, Long Island, and cared
for the first successful importation of Italian bees to America. It was from the original im-
portation that he made a selection of ten nice coloniés and brought them to Lyonsville into
the apiary we purchased and they have proven the superior qualities claimed for by German

Beekeepers before their introduction to America or here.

DO BEES INJURE GRAIN OR FRUIT? Many people contend that bees are an
injury to Buck-wheat by taking away the substance that would be formed into grain. What
are the facts? The flowers open.and honey is secreted, if the bees do not gather it, it is
wasted. Now what is the difference to the plant whether, the honey is lost in this way or it is
collected by the bees? If there is any difference the advantage appears to be in favor of col-
lection by the bees for the reason that it thus answers an important end to the economy of
nature consistent with ‘bee provisions in ten, thousand different ways in adopting means to
end. Abundant authority may be cited to show that instead of being a hindrance to the per-
fect development of grain or fruit, bees are indispensable i in the aid they give in fertilization.
The man with a fruit farm or green house, andthe gardener can nolonger get along without
the busy bee.

BEES FOR PROFIT AND PLEASURE. If one is situated in a locality where the
wild bees are in the woods, their fruit blossoms will be visited more or less by them, but one
that is fore-sighted will readily see the advantage of the honey bee to the fruit blossoms and
will have a few Italians in his back yard or green- -house, and he will find that they are not
only a source of profit financially but the pleasure alone derived from watching the busy
workers will pay him for all the trouble he has been to in caring for them.

NUCLEI We can furnish bees in one, two, three and five-frame nuclei, and full col-
FULL onies in Cary Simplicity, Langstroth Simplicity, eight and ten frame Dove-
COLON- tailed or Danzenbaker hive, also in pound and half pound packages. The nu-
clei are put up in light shipping boxes made of basswood, the top and bottom
IES are covered with wire cloth ; this makes a very light package, with plenty of
ventilation and strong enough to stand shipment any reasonable distance. They invariably
go through with little or no loss. Bees by the pound are shipped in light wire covered Pac«
kages, which enables the purchaser to secure a minimum express charge.

QUEENS Of all the different races, we know of none better. Since 1866 this strain
‘ has been used in preference to any other in the apiary we have purchased.
3 BANDS For our New England climate they are universally recommended. We have
ITALIANS one of the best locations in the country for purely mating queens. We have
either bought or Italianized all the bees within mating distance of our apiary and we now sel-
dom have one mismated, as there are few bees in the woods in this locality.
HIVES The simplicity hives are made in two sizes known as the Cary Simplicity and
Langstroth Simplicity, for short Cary Sim. and Lang. Sim. The Cary Sim. is 16 in. x 17 in.
x 11% in. deep and takes a brood frame 1034 x 14 outside dimensions. The Lang. Sim. is 16%
in. x 20 in. x 9% in. deep and takes a brood frame 9% x 17% outside dimensions. These
hives are equipped with metal spaced, Hoffman end spacing, or free hanging frames and metal
roof covers, and % in. metal bound super cover, designated Rc. ~
HIVES For the convenience of our customers, weare listing the Simplicity hives
and supers in the table form, using letters and figures in describing the same ;
AND each hive or part of a hive is known by a certain letter or number as described
SUPERS in the KEY TO SYSTEM OF HIVE NUMBERS found on inside of front
cover, with the description and cuts of each hive and super. We feel sure that no one will
have trouble in ordering by numbers and letters. The customers may describe the article
wanted if they wish. The Simplicity hives which have been on the market for over 50 years
are as yet preferred by many, particularly the Cary size, which is more especially adapted to
our New England climate, for successful wintering of the bees. These hives are made in the
most thorough manner and of the best white pine, supers are fitted to take the beeway or plain
sections. Each super is rabbited to fit the hive, which is a special feature of this outfit. By
this you are able to hold several supers to each hive without danger of their being easily
knocked out of place as is apt to be the case with the flat surface super.
All goods will be packed and delivered to the railroad station free of
SHIPPING charge. Our Railroad Station is Brattleboro and is a Union Station of
FACILITIES the B. & M., also the C. V., which means a prompt and direct freight
to you. Letters may be addressed to Guilford or Brattleboro as one may prefer.
SPECIAL. Parties in ordering or asking information should exercise great care to
specify which style and size of super, brood-frames, section holders, foundation, etc., as it is
frequently necessary to hold orders two or three days and write the party in regard to the size
or style of some article before we can ship the complete order ; also give specific directions on
order blank provided for same.

ITALIAN BEES AND QUEENS.

The wild bee has become a thing of the past and is considered by most people as inferior.
Among the other races, the Italians are universally recommended. They are certainly finer,
stronger, more active, and are noted for their clever disposition and superior quality as honey
gatherers. They are also less liable to contract bee disease. If youdo not already have the
Italian bees: we urge you to procure pure bred Italian queens and Italianize them. We will
breed the Domestics and Imported Leather color strains this season and develop the honey
gathering qualities of these strains. Our stock is selected because of the uniform marking
and the working qualities. You will find our stock unsurpassed for gentleness, industry and
hardiness.

A good laying queen is included in the above prices. If tested queen is wanted add $1.00.
All bees will be shipped on good straight worker comb built from full sheets of foundation, in
wired frames.

Nuclei.

We can furnish one, two, three, and five frame
nuclei. The nuclei are put up in light shipping
boxes made of basswood, the sides of which are
only 3-16 inch thick, and the end % inch. The
top and bottom are covered with wire cloth. This
makes a very light package, affords plenty of ven-
tilation, and is strong enough to stand shipping.
The bees so put up almost invariable go through
in good order with little or no loss.

Any of the nuclei, even the one frame, will
make a good strong colony if conditions are favor-
able. If the three or five frame nuclei are proper-
ly managed one will be surprised at the results

Fig. 1 that can be attained in one season, and further you
will have a stock of the choicest Italians.

Not Responsible

We can assume no responsibility if any of the nuclei should develop disease, owing to the
fact that foul brood already exists in a good many localities and is liable to break out in others
from infection already present in such localities. Our bees are under constant inspection. We
take extraordinary precautions and guarantee that no disease is present in any of our yards at
time shipment is made. In addition to this will say our bees are inspected each year by our
State Foul Brood Inspector or his deputies. According to our Vermont State law we are
not allowed to ship bees from any yard until it has been given a clean bill of health by State
Inspector. To those who desire further precaution we would advise them to purchase bees by
the pound after June Ist.
Bees by the Pound

We have been having an unusual large call the
past few seasons for bees by the pound and half pound
packages, and it is a very good way to get a start, if
you have old combs or odd size frames you wish
to use. The express charges are small in comparison
to express charges on nuclei or full colonies. We
have spared no pains to get as light a package as pos-
sible and yet strong enough to stand shipping. We
cannot take a pound of bees from a colony in May
or fore part of June without ruining the whole colony,
consequently we cannot ship bees without comb be-
fore June 1.

N. B.—Queeuis sent in neucleus colonies and packages of bees by the pound will usually be caged to prevent
injury in transit or danger of loss in removing from the shipping box tohive. Remove all queen cells that may
be started before liberating the queen.

Italian Queen

We are breeding only from the best strains of three banded Italians in an endeavor to de-
velop a strain of bees that are gentle and also possesses marked honey-gathering qualities.
The greatly increased demand for our queens and the large number of pleased customers war-
rants us in stating that the queers we are now breeding are noted for prolificness and honey-

gathering qualities.

Our stock is selected because of the uniform marking and the excellent working qualities
of the bees. We do not aim to rear queens that will produce light bees, but for gentleness,
industry and hardiness. We have procured queens from the apiaries of many prominent
breeders to cross in with our old strain to avoid in and in breeding and shall spare no pains in
rearing the finest queens thit can be reared,

We shall breed the Domestic and Leather Color Queens this season and shall endeavor by
careful selection from year to year to improve the honey gathering qualities of these strains.
We wish to say that our queen rearing yard is situated:in one of the finest localities for purely
mating our queens as we have either bought or Italianized all of the bees within mating dis-
tance of our apiary, and we seldom have one mismated as there are few wild bees in the woods
in this vicinity. All queens are reared in strong prolific colonies and mated in strong nuclei,
and laying before they are sent out.

Our hives are all numbered and duplicate numbers put on each package, and a record kept
of all queens sent out. If any prove impure we shall know before the purchaser, All queens
sold by us are warranted fertile. Safe arrival by mail guaranteed. In order that persons may
avail themselves of this guarantee in case of accident, they must in all cases notify us by re-
turn mail and return dead queen.

All complaints for impure queens must be made within thirty days of receipt of queens.
We shall commence shipping queens June Ist to 10th. We cannot raise them earlier in this
locality and get good ones only in very favorable seasons. Directions for introducing queens
will be found on back of queen tag.

Dark Leather Color Queens. These are raised from Queen Mother’s Imported
from Italy and are very prolific and gentle. Theyare usually quite dark in color, but some
are quite yellow and will send these to those who prefer this kind.

Domestic Queens. [hese are raised from a selected Breeder from Root’s Domestic
strain and noted for their gentleness and Honey gathering qualities.

Untestéd Queens. These are shipped as soon as they begin to lay with no guarantee
to replaee if they prove impurely fertilized.

Warranted Queens. These are reared and shipped same as above, with additional
guarantee to replace them if not purely mated.

Tested Queens. These are taken from full stocks where there are plenty of hatching
bees and are known to be purely mated and prolific.

Selected Tested Queens. These are selected from tested queens and are the very
best we have and are suitable to breed from as mother queens. ;

We aim to fill all queen orders by return mail, unless the weather is alt. gether too unfavorable we are usually
able todo this. For all early orders customers will please state just when delivery must be made or how many
days you can possibly wait for the queen, this will often save further correspondence and annoying delays. On
account of the heavy demand for early queens, and our inability to produce large numbers of these we are obliged
to advance our early prices slightly in order to be better prepared to supply our customers who must have early
stock. Even at the prices quoted it is very hard to supply queens during April and May.

One Story Simplicity Langstroth Hive.

This hive fig. 335 is one of.the best styles in the
market today andis preferred by many. It is similar
in construction to the dovetailed style, comprising all
of the important features, and has the additional ad-
vantage of the rabbets which enables one to tier up
the hives or supers without danger of their being
easily knocked out of place. The body is 16%x20x
9% deep and is strong in construction, the corners
being grooved and rabbeted so as to be nailed both
ways. Cement coated nails of proper sizes are in-
cluded to nail material. This hive body will take
plain Langstroth, Hoffman end spaced, metal spaced
and thick top stapled spaced brood frames. The
cover is the new metal roof, telescoping the body a
little, including a metal bound super cover. If this cover has occasionally a coat of our hive
paint it will last a long time and positively no leaking, which is a great advantage over the old
styles that are frequently leaking and soiling the comb-honey sections. The bottom board
regularly furnished with this outfit is the old style B bottom board of % inch stock, with cleats
running crosswise as shown in the cut and for the average beekeeper it equals new style Dan-

zenbaker Bottom which can be used by removing the rabbets at bottom of hive.

This hive is the same as shown above with
the addition of one or more supers as you may
order. One super is furnished with 1% story
hive, two supers with two story hive. The
supers fit upon the body upon each other, and
are interchangeable, furnished regular depths
to take either comb honey sections or shallow
extracting frames as ordered. Comb honey
supers are fitted to take 44%x1%, 4%x 1% or
4x5x1% honey sections, with section holders,

tracting supers take the shallow extracting taking 44x44x1} Plain Sections :
frames, 534x17%. This super is especially
adapted for extracting honey produced in localities where the honey flow is short and the col-
onies are of moderate strength, as a full story added to such colonies at the start would make
it too cold for the bees to do good work, as with the 4 story you can add more room from
time to time, as the strength of the colonies will permit. For most parts of our State we
strongly recommend the extracting super for honey production. These supers can be slid on

Byard’s Universal Foundation Fastener.

We are now able to offer a machine for fastening foundation in either 44%x1% or 4x5
sections ; known as the Universal Flexible-Plate Foundation Fastener. This is by all odds
the best ever put on the market for fastening foundation starters into sections. We feel free to
say this as it has given perfect satisfaction in our section room for the past four seasons and is
also endorsed by the largest honey producers in New England besides being the favorite
among a great many of the smaller users of foundation machines. It has a great many advan-
tages over other machines now in use. In most
machines a flat plate that comes either in direct
contact with or is suspended directly over the sec-
tion is used. From this plate dripping wax or soot
is sure to soil the section. In some machines the
block entering the starters is near the heat of the
lamp and often gets so hot that it becomes
necessary to suspend operation until the block has
been cooled.

With this machine all wax adhering to plate is
deposited on the inside of the section where the
foundation starters is fastened. This makes a
brace that you cannot get with other machines,
besides the wax is not dripping and wasting.
When the section is brought into position to re-
ceive the starter the flexible plate comes in con-
tact with and heats the wood a little where the

tened the block that centers the starter falls back
in position away from the heat, keeping it cool at
all times. A small kerosene lamp with metal chimney is placed under the large plate. A
lamp thus equipped will heat the plate without depositing soot. Both top and bottom starters
can be fastened in sections without removing the section from the machine. For those who
use both top and bottom starters in sections will find this alone worth the price of a machine
in one season. This machine can be fastened to the front of your bench with two screws in
such a position as to make it convenient for one to operate the machine handily when sitting
in a chair, and this leaves the whole top of the bench for sections, foundation or any thing you
may choose to use it for. With this device you can prepare more sections per hour, and it
is plain to be seen that the work will be stronger and cleaner.
