BOSTON: STEREOTYPED BY SAMUEL N. DICKINSON, No. 52 WaSHINGTON STREET. ADVERTISEMENT. In presenting the public with this Stanparp CaTaLocuE oF Rosss, we need hot spend a moment in recommendatory remarks. From time immemorial, the rose has been a favorite, and still continues to hold the proud distinction of ‘ Queen of Flowers,’ with which it was crowned centuries ago. The gifted of every age have loved to sing its praises, and still have left the half unsung. Its universal cultivation, alone, speaks volumes in its favor. It alike decks the garden of the humble cottager, and the parterre of the rich; and, while it crowns the modesty of the one, it loses none of its transcendent beauties amidst the splendor of the other. Notwithstanding the universal praise and favor it has received, it is comparatively but a few years since florists have allowed it its due share of attention; but the rapid increase and surpassing splendor of the varieties added to the Catalogues of France and England, since 1840, induces the Rose-growing community to believe that its latent beauties are but in the bud — beginning to unfold themselves — and; that others ‘Still fairer found, where all is fair; will soon be produced, that shall infinitely surpass any of the present known varieties. This Catalogue contains the greater part, if not all of the present.esteemed varieties ; and, whatever future valuable sorts may be raised, either in Europe or in this country, will be published in a Supplement. To varieties in families, which are not generally fragrant, F. is affixed, for fragrant; and E.F. to those which are so ina remarkable degree. The Provence, Moss, French Roses, Hybrid Provence, Damask, Sweet Briers, Damask Perpetual, and Tea-scented Roses, require no such mark, as they aré all fragrant, more or less. Those marked P. aré strorig growers, adapted for pillars. The following Abbreviations are used to express the form of the Flower: — Glob.; globular. The outer petals encircling the flower, till fully blown, in the manner of the common Cabbage, or Provence Roses. Exp., expanded. The flower rather flat, petals open, in some varieties showing the central stamens. Cup., cupped. The outer row of petals erect, rather incurved, inclosing numerous smaller petals. The crimson Perpetual Rose, when first opened, will illustrate this term. Cupped Roses often become compact after the first day of expansion, as the outer row of petals is displaced in very double Roses. Comp., compact. Petals stiff, close, and upright, resembling a Double Ranunculus. Price. The size of the plants, and the rarity of the varieties will govern us in our charges for the new sorts. All the old Roses will be supplied at the lowest Boston prices. ” By the dozen, in families, in assortments, or in large quantities, 4 liberal deduction will Sime 4 ADVERTISEMENT. be made. To furnish all the superior varieties, as they shall appear in Europe, will be our constant aim; to enable us to do so, we shall import from the best cultivators of the Rose in England and France, and make selections from the best and most exten- sive collections in this country. All new and beautiful sorts, which may be deemed worthy of cultivation, will be published in our Supplement, and sent out to order at fair prices. : Plants of the climbing, and of the Bengal, Tea, Noisette, Bourbon, Hybrid perpetual, and all the tender Roses, are kept in pots, and can be packed and sent away with safety at any season of the year. The hardy kinds of Roses may be safely removed, either in the autumn or spring. For planting out the Bengal, Tea, Noisette, and Bourbon kinds, the months of April and May are the most favorable.
