FOUQUIERIACEAR OF NEVADA

Spiny shrubs with erect virgate stoms; leaves caducous, fas-

ciculate; flowers thyrsoid=-paniculate, perfect, 5-mcrous; sepals

distinct; corolla united; stamens 10, inserted on the corolla;

styles 8, partially united; ovary l-cclled, 3=-valved.

FOUQUIERIA SPLENDENS Engelm. in Wisliz., Mem. North. Mex. 98. 18h8.

Stems several from the base, mostly simple, 1 to 7m. tall, distinctly furrowed and with stout divaricate spines; leaves fleshy, obovate, 1 to 2.5 om. long, usually dropping when the rains have ceased; panicles 10 to 25 cme long; sepals 4 to 6 mnie longs; corolla scarlet, tubular, 2 to 2.5 cme long, the lobes recurved; stamens exsertcd; capsule 1.5 cm. long; sceds fringed with white hairs.

Southern Nevada?: Widely dispersed in Arizona and south ern Utah and probably also in Clark and Lincoln Counties,
