FULGHUM EARLY OATS

The best early oat with exceedingly heavy straw. A three-
year test by one of the Southern Experiment Stations
shows that It is eight days earlier than 100 Bu., and the
yield per acre was 8 to 10 bushels less than 100-Bushel
Oats.

Its greatest value is to prolong harvest season, where
there is limited machinery equipment, and earlier harvest¬
ing allows your summer crop to be planted in time to make

crop relished by all kinds of stock, but prin¬
cipally planted for hogs and poultry. It is
also popular for "greens” on the table and
is a fine substitute for turnip or spinach
greens. Rape is hardy, standing any ordinary
cold in the Cotton Belt or farther South. It
is ready for grazing in 8 to 10 weeks from
planting, with its broad, succulent leaves,
and we know of no crop planted during fall
and winter that will bring as great returns
for such a little expenditure of time and
money for seed.

Culture — Plow and harrow your land down
fine. Plant any time from August to April.
10 pounds broadcast or 3 to 4 pounds per
acre if planted in drills like turnips. If
broadcast, cover the seed by a light harrow¬
ing. If there is a showery season Rape may
be planted between the corn rows at the last
working.

Here's How to Hove a Real Lawn

When to Plant

Our finest lawns are made during cool
months. As soon as weather cools off
until early spring is time to sow seed.
Allow grass to become established
without freezing weather if you can.
Where there are trees, establish grass
before or after leaves fall. Lawn
grasses, except Bermuda, may be
planted all fall and winter until late
spring — the earlier the better. Ber¬
muda Grass will start growth only in
warm soil and weather. Plant it from
May through August.

Prepare Soil Well

Spade or plow soil 12 in. deep. Remove
rocks, roots and litter. Where shady
there is frequently moss, showing acid
condition. To correct this, apply 100
Lbs. of Hydrated Lime per 1,000
square feet and rake it in 2 or 3
weeks before planting seed.

Grass needs food and water. For soil
to hold water and food, there must be
plenty of humus or vegetable matter
in the soil. For poor, sandy or heavy
clay soils we must haul in woods
earth or rich garden top-soil or we
must add humus to the soil we have.
Granulated Peat Moss and Peat Humus
are the best and purest forms of
humus. Soak good. Let soil settle be¬
fore planting.

Apply 100 Lbs. of Pulverized Sheep
Manure and 50 Lbs. of Bone Meal to
each 1,000 square feet (60x20 ft.).
Rake thoroughly, mixing fertilizer
with soil and working the surface
smooth and level.

Seed Sowing

5 Lbs. of seed will plant 1,000 square
ft. (50x20 ft.) of lawn with most
grasses. Rye Grass takes 10 Lbs.
Plant a plenty of seed to have a thick,
velvety lawn. Sow seed carefully so

not to skip spots. After broadcasting
seed, roll the seeded surface with a
roller, or firm the surface In some
other convenient way. Grass seed
needs only to be pressed into a firm
seed bed — not covered with soil.

Bermuda Grass

The best summer grass in the South
is Bermuda and it should be seeded
in the summer in sunny places. Ber¬
muda grass is brown in winter, so for
a year-round green lawn with Bermu¬
da, merely scratch Sheep Manure and
Bone Meal into Bermuda sod in the
fall or winter and broadcast Evergreen
Mixture, Rye Grass or Kentucky Blue
Grass over the closely mowed Ber¬
muda sod, scratch it in with a sharp
rake and roll it firmly and soak thor¬
oughly. Green grass quickly appears
and lasts until summer, when Ber¬
muda crowds out the winter grass.

Hastings’ Bulbs are produced in the famous hyacinth soils of Hillegom,
Holland, known the world over for healthy bulbs, easy to force and
earliest to bloom.

Culture — These exhibition or artificially fed, extra large sized, bulbs are
for growing specimen flowers in water indoors, for show competition and
for the largest spikes and biggest flowers. For exhibition purposes use
only deep, so-called Azalea pans or pots. Add some sheep or well rotted
cow manure at bottom of pots. Bury pots in prepared trench of ashes
outdoors or keep in cool dark place for 12 weeks and then about BO de¬
grees for a couple weeks until top growth develops. After this, bring
to sunny window, give plenty of fresh air, and force growth as fast as
you like. Use old or soak new pots in water 2 months before using for
hyacinths; 5 in. pots for single bulbs.
