The great improvement of Southern Soils during the past
25 years has been due principally to the use of the won¬
derful qualities of the various legume crops such as
Austrian Winter Peas, Vetch, Blue Lupines, hardy Les-
pedeza, Alfalfa and the several kinds of clover. These
crops all grow well during the winter season when other¬

NEW SANFORD Hastings' famous

Rust Resistant

WHEAT

The following information has been released
by Dr. H. P. Stuckev and Dr. R. P. Bledsoe
of the Georgia Experiment Station under
whose direction the variety was originated:
SANFORD WHEAT. A new variety of
wheat resistant to leaf rust and adapted to
Georgia conditions is now ready for dis¬
tribution to Georgia farmers. Four-year
trials of this wheat have yielded 6.4 bushels
tnore per acre than Gasta (a high-yielding
Bluestem selection). Sanford is similar to
Bluestem ( Purplestraw ) , except for having
somewhat more awns and greater resistance
to leaf rust. In years in which leaf rust is
prevalent, Sanford matures a few days later
than Bluestem, due to its superior resistance
to leaf rust.

Culture — Early fall planting is best. In early
seeding, plant one bushel of seed per acre.
After about November 15, it's better to use
1 1/4 to I V2 bushels per acre. Plant in drills,
using the "open furrow" method, the same
as for Oats. Easily grown in the South.

NEW CROP
GASTA WHEAT

Improved Blue Stem. Newest and finest
strain of Blue Stem, Beardless wheat, de¬
veloped by the Georgia Experiment Station
and being extensively planted now that it
is so well known. It has proven a heavier
seeder and with stronger stems than the
old variety. It better resists storms, seems
to be hardier and surely makes more grain
per acre. We recommend it for fall seeding
and our own recleaned special stock seed
will give you heavier yields because of
surer stands, deep rooting, heavy straw and

CULTURE — Prepare bed deeply and well. Soil
with leaf mold, peat moss and decayed cow
manure gives best results. Seeds germinate in
about 10 days and must not dry out during this
period; coating with peat moss over the bed
prevents drying out. Thin out or transplant to
six inches apart in rows and cultivate frequently.
During dry weather, water bed daily. July to
September, January to March are the best times
to plant, allowing plants to develop in vigorous
condition. They need only light protection to
stand our winters.
