NAMES LOCAL ADDRESS POSTOFFICE STATE Your New Deal Is Here — It’s Planting Time! 1 1 Fall Garden to 5 Spring Gardens Friends, that’s a dead wrong condition for us here in the South, when most years three or more kinds of vegetables can be taken from a good fall-planted garden every day during the winter months. Five times as many folks making spring gardens as make fall gardens may surprise you but its true. Our records for the nearly forty years our business has been located in Atlanta prove it. Between January 1st and May 1st we send out five times as many garden seed orders as we do from August 1st to December 1st. What's worse is that one-third or more of these fall garden orders are for turnip seed only. Now I know very well that the turnip patch for either salad or turnips is not to be “sneezed at.” They are fine and have a proper and important place. But why limit the fall planting to turnips? Why do not as many people here in the South have fall gardens as spring gardens? You may know the answer. We do not unless that most of us have never realized the fact that the fall garden can be made almost as im¬ portant as the spring garden if we will just give it a fair chance. Just look at the vegetables besides turnips that come in for late summer and fall planting: Beets, Italian Sprouting Brocoli, Col- lards, Cabbage, Carrots, Kale, Mustard, Lettuce, Onions, (both sets and seed). Radishes, Tendergreen and Spinach. All of these are largely hardy, will stand plenty of frost and freezes. In fact, it takes an unusually hard winter to kill out most of these easily grown vegetables anywhere in the Cotton Belt, while they regu¬ larly go through most winters in the Gulf section, Florida, South Atlantic States and South Texas. Further, if there is enough rainfall or moisture in the ground, both Bush and Pole Snap Beans can be planted up to September 1st in the Atlanta section and still later further South. Same is true of Bush Lima Beans (early), Cucumber, Okra, Garden Peas and Squash. In South Florida one can plant both hardy and tender vegetables almost any time during fall or winter. Gardens, both spring and fall are money-savers and health build¬ ers. One cannot stay in good condition of health without plenty of vegetable food. Every disease that holds our people back such as pellagra, forms of indigestion, poor blood and a lot of other ail¬ ments that could be mentioned are almost always caused by lack of vegetable food. The bigger and better the garden is kept, the smaller the store bill, the drug bill, the doctor's bill. City folks on an average are in better health than the folks living on our farms. Why? Largely because city folks eat plenty of veg¬ etables and fruit daily, the folks on our tarms and in our smaller towns do not. The city markets are piled high with fruit and vege¬ tables from all parts of our country every day in the year. City folks are buying and eating more and more vegetables and fruit, buying and eating less and less meat and bread and other things of that kind. Result, better health and stronger people in the cities; poorer health in the country and small towns. Is such a condition necessary? No! The answer to it is both spring and fall gardens with plenty of different kinds of vegetables kept going in them just as near the year round as possible. Piece out with home canned vegetables and fruits from home acres. Your closet or pantry shelves should be full of cans or jars that you have or will put up this summer and fall. If you question these statements as to the health and money¬ saving value of the garden ask your County Agent or even better, your Home Demonstration Agent next time you see her. She can give you facts that we cannot, because of lack of space. Take your garden seriously. Give it a “square deal" this fall. While you are about it give thought to the home fruit orchard as well. It’s also well worth your while. H. G. HASTINGS. READ DIRECTIONS FOR ORDERING SEND ALL ORDERS DIRECT TO H. G. HASTINGS CO., ATLANTA, GA. WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO AGENTS. Giant Zinnia 24 The Sweetest Flower That Grows HASTINGS’ SWEET PEAS Are The Finest Sweet Peas In All The World This is probably the most popular flower grown today and more improvements have been made than on perhaps any other flower. In the lower South, Sweet Peas are grown through the winter. In the upper South plantings are made from November to March. Experts’ opinions declare these the very best of each color in existence. Plant from December to March in rows. Stake or run vines on wires. For long flowering, dig rows out 12 inches deep, fill in 6 inches with well-rotted manure and soil mixed, drop seeds and cover 2 to 3 inches, gradually filling trench as growth starts. Be sure to plant at least a few rows and keep on cutting the flowers as they open so they will keep blooming longer. To grow the largest flowers, plant early in good soil worked deep, run rows north and south if possible, remove the early growth of all but two branches and thin plants to at least 6 inches apart. Water thoroughly when needed. Culture directions are on each package. One ounce plants 50 feet of single row. LATHRYUS — Hardy Perennial Sweet Pea. See page 26. EARLY FLOWERING SWEET PEAS greenhouse culture and outdoor winter planting in the lower South. They bloom about two weeks sooner than Spencer Sweet Peas planted at the same time, and bloom almost as free¬ ly. Try some along with the regular Spencers. Flowering earlier, they have that much longer to bloom before hot weather, an advantage over regular Spencer Sweet Peas. The Early Flowering type or race is the newest thing in Sweet Peas. (2535) Laurens Koster (2590) Double Phoenix These Are The Largest, Finest Hyacinths Grown 29 HYACINTH BULBS Hyacinths do best in a rich, light loam but do well *^uiiuac jn any good soil. For bedding and other outdoor planting, set bedding bulbs 6 to 8 inches apart each way and 10 inches apart for the selected exhibition varieties. Cover each bulb about one and a half times its own depth. For pot culture with the exhibition varieties the most beautiful spikes are made with only one bulb to each 5-inch pot or three or four in a larger pan. It is essential for blooming indoors that the growth be started in the dark. A frequent mistake is made by bringing the bulbs into the light too soon, resulting in a failure to bloom or weak spikes. Potted bulbs may be entrenched or heeled in the garden and cov¬ ered with. six inches of ashes or gravel for moisture and to prevent frost damage. A bed of ashes should be beneath the pots too, to keep out worms. They may also be kept dark and well watered in a cold-frame or cool cellar. Keep them dark for 12 weeks and then keep in low temperature (about 50 degrees) for 2 weeks until top growth is well developed. Then you may force them as rapidly as you wish. You will have strong, compact spikes by keeping close to the glass or window and giving plenty of air. Plant September to December.
