LIFE SCIENCES OCCASIONAL PAPERS, a numbered series of original scientific publications, pri- marily short and usually of taxonomic significance. LIFE SCIENCES MISCELLANEOUS PUBLICATIONS, an unnumbered series of publications of varied subject matter and format. All manuscripts considered for publication are subject to the scrutiny and editorial policies of the Life Sciences Editorial Board, and to review by persons outside the Museum staff who are authorities in the par- ticular field involved. Most of the specimens in the collection were donated by Dr. A. G. Hunts- man. Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto from 1927 to 1954. The Class Ascidiacea was one of the many groups of marine animals in which Dr. Huntsman was interested. Most of the specimens are from Canadian shores. The main collector of the Pacific and of the Atlantic specimens was Dr. Huntsman himself. The specimens from Hudson Bay and from James Bay were col- lected by Frits Johansen of the Department of Marine Fisheries and Mines at the time of the Canadian Arctic Expedition between 1913 and 1918. The origin and history of the specimens are substantiated by letters, field books, notes, and drawings filed in the department. This catalogue is an annotated list of the Huntsman types in the col- lection. Characteristics of the Catalogue The type Oholotype] is the first entry for each catalogue species. All type [ = holo- type] entries follow the same format with the information given listed in the following order: species name, author, year, synonym (where applicable), type designation, catalogue number, locality, collector, date, condition, remarks (where applicable), and information from publications. Pertinent cotypes [ = paratypes] are listed after the first entry and follow a modified format to avoid repetition. Species name, author, year, synonym (where applicable), and information from publications are omitted and the type designation is listed for the first cotype [ = paratype] entry only and is omitted in subsequent entries for the same species. Most of the information for the entries was taken from the specimen labels. Entries appear in alphabetical order by genus and species. Species names are written as shown on the original labels with the author's name and year of publication next to them. Frequently, the designations on the labels are obsolete according to the Interna- tional Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (1964). Designations accepted at present are set in square brackets after the label designation. 1 Each catalogue number consists of six upper-case letters and of one to three digits. The first three letters stand for Royal Ontario Museum; CN stand for catalogue number and P is the identifying letter for the Catalogue of Invertebrate Chordates; the numeral identifies the specimen(s) and the jar in which it is (they are) shelved and is identical with the numeral on the label in the jar. Where insufficient data is shown on the original label the information is supplemented from pertinent literature (Hunts- man, 1912b). Supplementary information from Huntsman 1912b is given in square brackets. Condition indicates whether a specimen is dissected or intact. Notes on the nature of the substrate, preservative (where other than alcohol), depth, and other per- tinent information are listed under remarks. A cknowledgements I am indebted to Dr. Ian Ball for the suggestion that an ascidian type catalogue be pre- pared and for providing me with an example (Van der Spoel, 1969). I wish to thank Dr. David Barr for reading the manuscript and suggesting a suitable format.
