Stems elongated, branching, leafy; leaves whorled, or the lower opposite, sessile, minutely serrulsate; flowers dioecious, from a tubular, eecleft spathe, the staminate sessile, early separating from the plant and floating on the surface of the water or longepedicelled and usually remaining attached, the pistillate sessile, with a long pedicel-like tube which reaches the surface;
