Copyright :—Council of the South African College) ICONES ORCHIDEARUM AUSTRO-AFRICANARUM EXTRA-TROPICARUM ; OR, FIGURES, WITH DESCRIPTIONS EXTRA-TROPICAL SOUTH AFRICAN ORCHIDS BY HARRY BOLUS, F.L.S., Hon.D.Sc. (Cape) VOLUME III. London: WILLIAM WESLEY & SON, 28, ESSEX STREET, STRAND 1913 Vay Has Vaws 4 - 2 - ™ 4, ‘te a ae h oF 7 yi ae, 1 = - - + = ey PREFACE The publication of the present volume represents the fulhlment of some portion of the trust bequeathed to me by _ the late author. Thirty-six of the hundred plates have already appeared in the “Orchids of the Cape Peninsula,’ published in 1888, and now out of print. In addition to these nine were drawn from the living plants by Mr. F. BOLUS and bear his name. The remaining fifty-five are the finished, or more or less finished drawings left by the author. In the latter cases additions of various kinds were made to complete the plates by Mr. F, BOLus, to whom I am also greatly indebted for his help in the correcting and revising of proofs and for a general supervision of the whole work. Besides the old friends whose help has been acknowledged in the prefaces to the previous volumes, | specially wish to thank Mr. A. G. MCLOUGHLIN, of Engcobo, whose specimens carefully enclosed in several layers of brown paper saturated with water arrived after a journey of five or six days looking as if they had just been gathered; also Mr. T. R. Sim, of Pietermaritzburg, and Mrs. T. V. PATERSON, of Redhouse, daughter of the late Mr. RUSSELL HALLACK, in whose honour Satyrium Hallackii was named. It is our intention to proceed with the drawing of African Orchids, and in order to achieve this end we must rely very considerably on those who are interested in this study and have opportunities for collecting and transmitting living specimens. These will be most gratefully received, and labels for free postage can be sent to all who desire them. H.
