qH JOURNAL ilix ; THE EAST AFRICA NATURAL HISTORY ™ SOCIETY AND NATIONAL MUSEUM is uecember 1981 No. 174 EASTERN AFRICAN BIRD RINGING REPORT 1977-1981 G. C. BACKHURST P. O. Box 24702, Nairobi, Kenya This report covers the four ringing years between 1 J uly 1 977 and 30 J une 1 98 1 . The number of birds ringed in 1979-80 was the highest ever (25 738, see Table 2); the totals for the other three years were average. The number of recoveries of ‘Nairobi’-ringed birds was disappointingly low: only 27 showing a movement of over 1 00 km are listed in Table 3. The minute number reported in 1 980 and 1 98 1 is especially puzzling. An examination of the Marsh Warbler figures is interesting in this regard: between 1967 and 1978 7744 were ringed; so far these have generated 10 long-distance recoveries. However, the 9493 Marsh Warblers ringed between the autumn of 1978 and the spring of 1981 have resulted in none, although two foreign-ringed birds were controlled during this time (see Table 3). Still not a single Whitethroat from eastern Africa has been recovered anywhere, even though over 16 000 have been ringed, but recovery rates for some other species, for example Great Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Blackcap and Red-tailed Shrike, have been high. Most ringing during the period has been done in Kenya, especially at Ngulia Safari Lodge in Tsavo National Park (West), around Nairobi and at Mida Creek on the coast. Very little has been done in Uganda but in Tanzania there has been a considerable ringing effort, mainly in forested areas by S.N. Stuart. The arrival of N. Baker at Dar es Salaam augurs well for the future. In 1977 ‘Nairobi’ rings were first used in the Sudan by G. Nikolaus and M. Raguschat; previously British Trust for Ornithology rings were used, mainly around Khartoum by A. Pettet; Prof. Pettet’s totals are not included in Table 1 but will be given in the next report. The northward extension of the East African ringing scheme to the Sudan has resulted in an increase in the number of Palaearctic, and to a lesser extent Afrotropical, species ringed. At first most ringing was done in the south of the country but in 1980 work started along the Red Sea coastal strip during the southward migration and a further expedition to this area is planned for the 1981 autumn. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Ringers gratefully acknowledge the help given them by various people in granting permission to ring birds in certain areas, $uch as National Parks and private land. We are also grateful to the Administrative Director of the National Museums of Kenya for allowing the Museum’s address to appear on rings. We are also most grateful to the Head Postmaster in Nairobi for forwarding a number of recovery' letters to the Museum and to the Museum staff, especially to the Head of the Department of Ornithology, for further forwarding recovery letters and information to the Ringing Organizer. ■Scientific names are given in Table 1. Page 2 G.C. BACKHURST No. 174 A number of other people have been of tremendous help and 1 should like to thank especially Roger and Jan Chambers for everything they have done to assist ringers working at Ngulia Lodge. Special thanks too go to Bill Woodley, Warden of Tsavo National Park (West), for allowing ringing in the Park and for his support. Finally, I should like to thank officers of certain foreign ringing schemes for their co-operation with recoveries, and Mr George Vamos for help with translations.
