COMPILED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES BY GEORGE ROBERT GRAY, ORNITHOLOGICAL ASSISTANT, ZOOL. DEPARTM., BRITISH MUSEUM ; AND AUTHOR OF SEVERAL WORKS ON ENTOMOLOGY, ETC. PRINTED BY RICHARD AND JOHN E. ASa rearrangement of the Ornithological collection of the British Museum is about to take place in the new and splendid gallery ap- propriated by the Trustees for its reception, it is especially desirable that the nomenclature to be adopted therein should receive the most careful attention, and be founded on the strictest and most impartial rules. To carry this intention properly into effect, it was obviously essential that the person charged with the arrangement (under the kind directions of J. G. Children, Esq., Keeper of the Zoological Collections) should be well acquainted with all the published genera which have been proposed in this particular branch of zoology ; and the various classifications given by MM. Illiger?, Vieillot®, Cuvier’, Temminck4, Vigors*, Boie*, Ch. Bonaparte Prince of Musignano 8, Lesson », Sundevall', and Swainson‘, formed, of course, the primary sources from whence his knowledge was derived. In addition to these standard and more general works, he has also consulted all those * Tlliger’s Prodromus Systematis Mammalium et Avium, 1811. > Vieillot’s Analyse d’une nouyelle Ornithologie élémentaire, 1816. ° Cuvier’s Régne Animal, 1817. 4 Temminck’s Manuel d’Ornithologie, précédé d’une Analyse de Systéme géné- ral d’Ornithologie, 1820. © Vigors’ Arrangement of the hitherto published Genera of Birds, Zool. Cy- clop., 1837. ane iV recent publications with which he is acquainted, in which any new genera have been proposed ; and has thus endeavoured to make his list as complete as possible. In this way, he believes that he has brought together a much more comprehensive series than any that has hitherto been given; and although he had originally intended it only for his own private use, he has been led to suppose, from the frequency with which various ornithological friends have consulted him relative to points connected with his MS. (which also contains characters of the genera, the drawing up of which has occupied the leisure hours of the writer for some time past, and may hereafter be given to the world in a more perfect form,) that the list, when printed, may be generally acceptable to Ornithologists. The arduous task of tracing back each genus to its source, and of comparing and estimating the value of synonyma, (especially in eases where, from the adoption of different principles of division, or from the want of any principles at all, it was difficult to form a pre- cise idea of the limits of the genera proposed, ) was an essential part ofan undertaking, the foundation of which was to be based on “the inflexible law of priority.” From a want of the means of compari- son, or from some other cause, it will be seen, on a reference to the List, that many of the genera (restricted in exactly the same de- gree) have received three or four synonymous appellations, which, to use an expression of Mr. Swainson, “strikingly illustrates the in- extricable confusion which now reigns throughout every part of ornithological nomenclature.” Such confusion from “the multipli- zation,” says Dr. Richardson, “of synonymous names for the objects of Natural History, has been often deservedly reprobated, as crea- ting a barrier to the advancement of the science.” To obviate this inconvenience as much as possible, the compiler has subjoined, as far as they are known to him, the synonyms of each genus, adopt- ing in every case the name which, to the best of his knowledge and belief, was earliest proposed. Acting upon this impartial rule, he has not thought it just to follow the practice adopted by many wri- ters, of rejecting names merely because they were unaccompanied by characters, when there appeared a sufficient indication to deter- mine their proper application. When the ‘meaning of the author,” says Mr. MacLeay, “is thus in some measure ascertained, I may Vv choose not to increase the confusion by refusing to adopt them.” Among those, indeed, who have been foremost in rejecting such names, few are found to have followed throughout the principle which they have themselves laid down. Thus these-very writers have frequently recurred to the names of Brisson and others, who neither used them in the sense in which genera are now under- stood, nor gave characters by which their limits could be deter- mined. What may have been the motive of such inconsistent in- novations, it is not for the writer to conjecture; but their effect has certainly been (both in cases of rejection and substitution) to attach the names of the innovators to a great number of new com- binations of generic and specific names, which, in strict justice, can only be regarded as synonyms. So far has this desire of introducing new names been carried, that many Ornithologists are in the constant habit of changing ge- neric names, even when accompanied by characters, if the slightest modification is made in the circumscription of the group to which they are applied, or even if the characters do not tally with their own idea of sufficiency. Thus, an author will not hesitate to state, that he cannot adopt the genera of certain Ornithologists, because they are not what he is disposed to consider ‘“ natural divisions;” he therefore proposes his own divisions, and designates them by his own names. But it is curious in such cases to compare the “ natu- ral” with the “unnatural” divisions; and to observe, in the great majority of instances, how nearly they coincide with each other. The inutility, or worse, of coining new generic names in such cases is obvious to all except the coiner himself, who may perhaps fancy that he is increasing the stock of knowledge, while he is only overloading the memory with synonymous terms. Such uncalled for changes must necessarily prove detrimental to the progress of science, the advancement of which is supposed to be aimed at by every systematist, although too many of them are apt to forget this true end, and to think only of the means of elevating them- selves at the expense of their predecessors and of the unhappy student, who becomes bewildered in the choice among so many different systems, each carefully shrouded in the veil of its own no- menclature. vi After this strong but reluctant expression of his opinion with respect to the growing practice of unnecessarily altering generic names, it may be expected that the writer should state his reasons for having in a very few instances ventured himself to reject the generic names of others and to propose new ones in their place. But these are cases of a very different character, in which the re- tention of the older names would be calculated to give rise to am- biguity, and thus to defeat the very object for which “ proper” names are used. They consist of two classes: in the first the same name has been previously employed in other branches of Natural History ; and such repetitions have an obvious tendency to create confusion. ‘We should,” says Mr. Swainson, “not know, in fact, which was intended, a butterfly or a plant, a quadruped or a spider. When such repetitions are discovered, the name first imposed or employed is to be retained, and a new one given to the other group. Thus Urania in Entomology is an old genus in Botany, it is there- fore now changed to Leilus ; Lophyrus in Ornithology, an old genus in Entomology, is now changed to Ptilophyrus.”’ ‘The sanction of authors of note to changes so imperatively called for has induced the writer in this general view of Ornithology to follow their ex- ample by striking out such equivocal names; but he has always en- deavoured, where it was possible, to supply their place with names from the older authors, in preference to inventing new ones of his own. The second class comprehends a few generic names, differing only in termination from others previously in use, and consequently liable to be confounded with them. Here again he has the sanction of high authority for this very necessary change. ‘Thus the name of Ocypterus has been rejected by Dr. Horsfield, who has substituted for it that of Leptopteryx, a genus under the name of Ocyptera ha- ving been previously established in Entomology ; and Alectwra has been changed by Mr. Swainson into Catheturus, on account of the name of Alecturus having been previously applied to another genus of birds. The repetition of sounds so nearly similar as these would inevitably tend to confuse ; and the few cases in which they occur have therefore been treated in the same manner as those of the former class. A great deal might easily be said on the subject of the different Vil classifications of birds proposed by the authors already cited ; but a discussion of the merits of each would occupy more space than can well be afforded on the present occasion, and the student is there- fore referred for information on these points to the works themselves. It may be right however to state, that the system followed by the writer is neither dichotomous, quinary, nor septenary, but one which he hopes may be considered natural, inasmuch as it is founded on similarity of habits and the relations of external character and struc- ture. It may be regarded as based on the arrangements of M. Cu- vier and Mr. Vigors, with such improvements as in his view of the subject could be gleaned from those of Mr. Swainson and others. It may be as well to add that the list contains some genera esta- blished, in the opinion of the writer, upon characters too trivial to admit of their being definitively adopted ; but it has not been his in- tention here closely to criticize the value of the subdivisions em- ployed. On the contrary, he has thought that he should perform a more acceptable service, by giving, as far as he is able, a correct no- tion of all the genera that have been proposed in this branch of science, leaving it to the judgement of each individual who chooses to pursue the subject, to select those which he considers tenable, and to erase the rest. He agrees with Mr. Vigors, that “no individual possesses the right of dictating what are, and what are not, good generic groups, or of erasing from the list of genera those of his fel- low naturalists which may not exactly square with his own parti- cular view.” Indeed the writer is of opinion, that not only in lists of this kind, but also in monographs of species, all the information should.be conveyed that may assist the student; and he strongly objects therefore to the practice which has been followed by seve- ral modern writers of such works, of excluding all that they have not themselves seen, and thus casting a doubt upon the accuracy of their predecessors, and at the same time leaving an opening for the description of objects as new, which have already been well described, but are thus improperly cast into oblivion. Those genera which are not at present contained in the collection of the British Museum are marked with an asterisk ; by which it will be seen that although the collection has so rapidly increased, (especially within the last few years,) as to contain no fewer than vill three thousand species and more than double that number of speci- mens, there still remains ample room for addition, both through the continued liberality of individuals and from the purchases di- rected by the Trustees; and when the new arrangement is com- pleted, the collection will, the writer doubts not, be found worthy of the nation and of the establishment of which it forms a part.
