THE object of the present List is to give a complete Cata- logue of the specimens of the Order Gallinae or Gallinaceous Birds contained in the Collection of the British Museum, indicating the locality and the source whence each has been derived. With this view the different individuals of each contained in the Collection are indicated by the letters fly 6, f, etc. following the name of the species and its sy- nonyms. Closely allied to F. pileatus, but smaller, and the feathers of the breast of the male are without the triangular spot at the apex of each feather ; but it is, with the whole of the under surface, of a pale isabelline colour, with very faint brown trans- verse undulations. In the female the breast and upper part of abdomen are marked along the shaft of each feather with deep marroon, slightly increasing in size at the apex ; the upper part of back and wings blotched with black, while the lower part of back, rump, and upper tail-coverts are indistinctly barred with pale fulvous, which is margined above with obscure black. 20. Like the former species in general appearance, but the top of the head and back of the neck brown, tinted with rufous and undulated with black; sides of the neck rufous white, which is separated by a longitudinal line of darker rufous from the ear ; upper part of throat white ; lower part of neck, breast, and be- neath the body cinereous, tinted with olive, and with zigzag narrow lines of fuscous ; abdomen cinereous white ; upper part of back olivaceous, tinted with cinereous and vermiculated with black ; lower part of back, wings, and tail olivaceous, tinted with rufous brown, with numerous irregular lines of black, and with scattered rufous-white spots, but not on the smaller wing- coverts and secondaries ; the latter olivaceous, with numerous marks of black; under tail-coverts rufous white, irregularly marked on the sides of each feather with black, olivaceous, and rufous white. Front, broad band over the eyes, base of lower mandible, front of neck and breast slaty grey ; feathers of the neck with a single white spot at the apex of the shaft, while those of the breast have a spot on each side of the shaft, also white but with a black margin ; sides of body ferruginous grey, irregularly spotted with white, margined and vermiculated with black ; top of head black, margined and banded with ferruginous ; abdomen white ; upper surface marked somewhat like the former species, but the black bands are broader and less marbled with ferruginous, outer margin of the feathers broadly greyish brown, and the white line between this margin and the black centre is much narrower ; the secondaries and tertials black, irregularly marked on the outer web with fulvous white ; quills black, with smaller white spots on the outer web than in the former species ; and it is about the same size. 104 GALLINJE. 3.
