DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Being selected as a director for any production is a huge undertaking. Essentially, you are being trusted to put on a show that will leave the audience entertained and inspired, the cast and crew with fond memories and new experiences, and yourself with a sense of pride and growth. At first, I was not exactly sure how I was going to achieve success in each of these directorial realms, but I think that is what made me agree to take on The Drowsy Chaperone as the director. I needed a theatrical project that I could call my own. I wanted to take all of my theatre experiences, my perspectives as an audience member, leading role, ensemble member, and stage crew participant, and use them to create something beautiful. And, that’s exactly what I have done. This beauty has shone through the Livingston Theatre Company’s fall production this year, and I think it’s pretty evident by what you see here on our stage.

This show explores critical themes ranging from the neuroticism of the Man in Chair, the concept of how the mind perceives reality, and the varying levels of romance. Despite its cliche and humorous nature, Bob Martin and Don McKellar do an amazing job at incorporating these elements into the show. We have worked very hard to make sure these themes are ever-present and conveyed accordingly. Furthermore, the writers do include some racy references in the script, and I hope you can find the humor in them as they intended. Lastly, the show-within-a-show idea adds another layer to this production. To explore modern theatre versus the classical Jazz Age Broadway production, via this theatrical technique, has been the most arduous part of my job. Nevertheless, we believe that we have crafted a show that does justice to the book and score of The Drowsy Chaperone.

I have been incredibly blessed with a dedicated Pro-Staff and inspirational cast and crew. Each person has reached their fullest potential and really strived to be the best performer they can be. In addition to the cast’s vibrant energy, I need to recognize my two assistant directors. These two women are the most dedicated, admirable, and intelligent individuals I ever have had the pleasure of working with. The collective efforts of my Pro-Staff and the cast and crew achieved my ultimate goals for this show, which included production efficiency, preservation of quality, and overall positivity. Most of my gratitude is directed at the Livingston Theatre Company's Executive Board for giving me this amazing opportunity. Moreover, I would not be here if it were not for my parents allowing me to be involved with theatre. This has been one of the most rewarding, refreshing, and challenging experiences of my life, but I would not trade it for anything in this world. Thank you, our audience, for coming to see The Drowsy Chaperone. I appreciate your patronage.

Alex Golden

PRODUCER’S NOTE

The Drowsy Chaperone is a show within a show, a musical within a comedy.

A man in a chair is going to show you how much the story of the "Drowsy Chaperone” inspires him.

We are beyond excited to share his story, because it is the same as ours. All of us, onstage and offstage, have felt that excitement and passion for this art form, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

As an entirely new Executive Board, we’ve had the opportunity to come into this season with fresh perspectives and new ideas. We were able to find a new and improved rehearsal space thanks to all the hard work of the Student Life staff and with the help of our advisor, ally, and friend, Laura Christensen. We’d like to extend a thousand thank yousto them, as well as Elizabeth O’Connell-Ganges, Kerri Wilson, Mark Sharp, Dr. Tim Grimm, and Jason Goldstein. They have been steadfast allies of our company for years, and this company would not exist without their support.

So much is going to happen after the curtain closes on the Drowsy Chaperone. We cannot wait to present the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in February - you may even get a chance to compete on stage. In March, we’re heralding the return of LTC’s 24-Hour Musical Challenge. And in April you’ll get to experience a show unlike anything our company has produced - In the Heights.

If you’ve never understood what drives “theatre people” to be so zealous and dramatic, we hope some of Man-in-Chair's passion rubs off on you before you leave.

So pull up a chair, and enjoy the Drowsy Chaperone.

The 2014-2015 Executive Board

Christian Munoz, Matthew Miller, Gina D'angelo and Matthew Finnerty
