Pull tongue forward, using handkerchief, or pin with string, if necessary. 4. Imitate motion of respira- tion By, alternately compressing and expanding the lower ribs, about twenty times a minute. Alternately raising and lowering the arms from the sides up above the head will stimulate the action of the lungs, eee it be done gently but persistently, 5. Apply warmth and friction to ex- tremities, 6. By holding tongue forward, closing the nos- trils, and pressing the ‘* Adam’s apple” back (So as to close entrance to stomach), direct inflation may be tried. Take a deep breath and breathe it forcibly into the mouth of pa- tient, compress the chest to expel the air, and repeat the operation. 7. DON’T GIVE UP! People have been saved after HOURS of patient, vigorous effort. 8, When breathing begins, get patient into a warm bed, give WARM drinks, or spirits in teaspoonfuls, fresh air, and quiet. SUNSTROKE.—There are two important indications for treatment — reduction of temperature and the use of stimu- lants. The patient should first be removed to a cooler spot if possible, or at least where shade can be secured. The treatment should be begun at once. The clothing about the neck and body must be either loosened or removed. Cold is particularly indicated in cases where there is great heat of the Body and delirium and convulsive movements are present. This means of reducing the temperature may be applied in the shape of cracked ice about the head and spine, or the use of cold water. If the heat of the body is very great, it may be necessary to wrap the patient in sheets wet with cold water. Ifthereis, besides the great heat, evidence of serious depression, stimulants must be used while the cold is being applied. HEMORRHAGE.— The usual treatment is rest in the re- cumbent position ; small pieces of ice should be freely swal- lowed, and the application of ice wrapped in a towel or in an ice-bag, or snow, cold water, etc., over the stomach; hot applications may be applied to the extremities, FIRE IN A BUILDING.— Crawl on the floor. Shock, which is always present in severe burns, requires the adininistration of stimulants, Pain is more constant and intense in burns than in any other form of injury, and requires sedatives, which should be adminis- tered by the medical attendant. Later on the appearances of inflammation and other complications are to be carefully watched for. SUFFOCATION FROM INHALING ILLUMINATING GAS. — Get into the fresh air as soon as possible and lie down. Keep warm. Take ammonia—twenty drops to a tumbler of water, at frequent intervals; also, two to four drops tincture of nux vomica every hour or two for five or six hours. TESTS OF DEATH.— Hold mirror to mouth. The Clerk of t Of the Woods Wanted: A Building Lot HETHER our interest in birds be studious or friendly, it is not neces- sary for us to be constantly seeing new species. The most familiar will still show us unfamiliar traits. The only thing is to keep an eye on their doings, and to question ourselves as to what is passing in their minds. Three days ago, hearing from a distance Several vesper sparrows singing in a mow- ing-field, I went a little out of my way to cross it, and presently found myself on a bit of knoll with the birds in tune on all sides. They were the first that I had seen this season, though I had heard the song of one on the ilth. I stood still to watch and listen. There is little bird music that is more to my taste than the vesper spar- row’s; and there is none that surpasses it in a certain sweet placidity or in a certain touch of artistic perfection. It is worthy of its maker’s name. Nobody need desire a truer vesper service than to sit, after sundown, on a fence between an old pas- ture and a stretch of grass land, with one or two vesper sparrows (grass finches is another pretty name’for them) singing on one side and one or two field sparrows on the other. Serenity, sanctity, peace of heart and soul, all that saints have ever prayed for, yea, the rest and purity of heaven, it- self, have here found expression. Well, as I said, I was standing motion- less, when I became aware that two of the birds, the two nearest me, were chasing each other about, evidently engaged in some kind of controversy. They kept mostly in the grass, and restricted themselves to a very limited area, seemingly determined, no matter how hot matters might become, never to go outside of a certain narrow cir- cle. . All the while they sang, both of them, every few seconds. Often they sang on the wing, one in pursuit of the other, always within a few feet of the ground, all their flights being extremely short, of course, since neither of them would be driven be- yond the prescribed limits. To leave the ring would perhaps have been to acknowl- edge defeat. Again and again they faced each other like game cocks, and less often they rose into the air, beak to beak. Only twice did I see them actually come to blows and roli over and over in the grass. The rest of the contest was of a pretty Quakerish, non-combative complexion; a trial of endurance, it seemed, rather than of brute force. Once (and this had a ludi- crous look) the birds stood and stared at each other, their bills being only a few inches apart, and one of them sang, and repeated the strain. ‘‘Hear that,’’ he seemed to say, ‘“‘and hear. that!’’ For half an hour, more or less, I kept quiet and watched the show, asking myself all the while what it meant. Once the birds perched, one on a fence post, one in a low sapling—the only one near—and sang and sang by turns. Now and then they separ- ated for a fraction of a minute, but at once resumed activities, chasing each other through the grass or through the air above it, quarters. and anon coming again to close When they were not. singing they emitted almost continually little crack- j ling, bill-snapping, spiteful-sounding noises, which put me in mind of a canary crack- ing seeds. What was all this about? Were the birds rivals in love? Possibly. But, if so, where was the fair loved one? For a time, it is true, a third bird came into the ring near them; but neither contestant paid slightest attention to her (or to him),and presently she (or he) went away. At first—for perhaps five minutes—I took the birds for male and female. The male was courting, I thought (for the wooing of birds, in some cases at least, looks very much like a fight), and when, after a hot chase and a moment of silence, he flew across the ring and the second one at once followed, I was careless enough to laugh. “Ha, ha!’ said I. ‘She says no, but when her suitor takes her at her word, she comes to her senses in a hurry.” It was a hasty judgment, and an unworthy piece of cyni- cism; for just then I discovered that both birds were singing, one as freely and as well as the other, and therefore were al- most certainly both males. They were not lover and plain, nor was there any indication that they were rival suitors. What then was the meaning of all this curious and won- derfully resolute belligerency? As to that, I do not mind admitting that I had a the- ory, but before stating it I should like to describe a similar scene, witnessed some years ago, between two birds of the warbler family. That also was in early April— April 4, 1890. I quote from my diary: “Last. evening was very mild, with a bright moon, and in writing to I said that the night ought to bring us some birds —‘pine warblers, perhaps.’ This’ morning, in Dr. Emery’s pines, I found them; two birds, both singing. They were behaving in a strange and puzzling manner; chasing each other about among the trees, often not alighting for many minutes together, and never going out of the small wood, a pitch-pine grove on a rounded hilltop. Then one would perch and sing once—possibly twice—and immediately the other would do the same in another tree at some distance. They behaved like male and female. The pursuit was gentle, never with any sign of anger or any attempt to pounce one upon the other. “} went farther, and came back in half an hour or more; and they were still en- gaged in precisely the same manner. I tried now to determine their sex by the state of their plumage, but they gave me lass, just J the 7 it was | no good opportunity till at last they all at once got their bills together and came slowly to the ground, say twenty feet from me, head to head. They remained on the ground for perhaps half a minute, but were in bushes and gr: and in such a jumble that I got no really good idea of their plu- mages, except that I thought then, as I had done previously, that one bird was some- what brighter than the other. As well as I could make out, one of them had grasped the other’s bill in its own. ‘They tumbled about for a little and then separated, and at once resumed their’chase of each other among the trees. They never once uttered a note, either in flying or during the time they were struggling on the ground, ex- cept as they perched and sang. “Now, then, does the female pine warbler sing? Or were the birds both males con- tending for the possession of this piece of woods—trying to wear each other out? One sang as well as the other, for aught that I could see. They were still chasing each other when I came away, and had been, doing so for at least an hour. This pitch- pine grove is a favorite resort of pine warblers. One was singing there last au- tumn as late as Oct. 12.” Two days later I find another entry in my journal: “Only one pine warbler in the Emery pines as far as I could discover.” With this observation I place another made, I think, still longer ago. Then two male chestnut-sided warblers were watched for a long time chasing each other round and round a patch of shrubbery—huckle- berry bushes and the like—in a pasture. As I remember the scene, it was exactly. like the one just described, lacking only, the dramatic bill-to-bill episode. In that case the sex of the birds was practically unmistakable, and I had little or no ques- tion that the contestants were, as I have intimated above, trying to wéar out each other’s patience. Both had pitched upon the same desirable summer quarters, and neither would give up the place till he had seen whether the other wanted it still more than himself. They had no way of settling the controversy by lot or by arbitration, we may suppose, and were holding a prim- itive kind of auction. Each was a bid, and the site was to be his who should bid longest. This, then, is my theory or hypothesis ¢éor guess, if the reader so pleases—it is all one) as to the meaning of my vesper spar- rows’ conduct. Hayfields and -huckleberry pastures are broad, but the birds have never too much room. eee a Rane rer fw ete Ltn nan, Rpt fem Cre te Ua, Hoes Ao. Bbanine
