A transit of Venus over the Sun’s disc, December 8th; visible entire to Eastern Asia and Australia and in part to Africa and Sandwich Islands. A transit of Venus furnishes the most accurate method for determining the distance of the Earth from the Sun. The last occurrence of this Phenomenon happened in 1769, when expeditions on the most extensive scale were fitted out by the larger civilized governments of the world, for the purpose of observing it. The highest interest attaches to this present occurrence, as from some independent reasons, it is suspected that the Sun’s accepted distance is too large by about two millions of miles. MORNING AND EVENING STARS. Mercury will be Evening Star about March 2, June 28, and Oct. 24, andMorning Star about April 15, Aug. 13, and Dec. 2. : Venus will be Morning Star until Feb. 23d, then Evening Star until Dec. 8th, and Morning Star again the rest of the year.
