Sargent 7570 Mack Hicks Road, Trussville, AL 35173 On 5 November 1990 we received a telephone call from Lil Dubke of Ooltewah, Tennessee, informing us of a hummingbird feeding at a hummingbird feeder at the residence of Keith and Anne Miller in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Plans were made immediately to meet Lil and John Henderson at the site the next morning. Because of the November date, this hummingbird was likely to be some species other than Ruby-throated {Archicochus colubris). This report came at an excellent time because of our study of wintering hummingbirds being conducted under permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Upon arriving at the Miller residence on 6 November 1990 we were greeted by Lil and John who informed us that the bird was feeding regularly at the hummingbird feeder. Field observations from 75 feet away with 8x42 Elite binoculars revealed a small, rather nondescript hummingbird with a dull green back, dull and dingy gray underparts, brownish gray crown, long slightly decurved bill and a short tail with some white at the tips. The tail was rapidly flicked downward as the bird hovered. Late fall Ruby-throated with nectar-pollen stains and extensive feather wear could exhibit all of these field marks. As we set up our trapping gear the bird approached, suspicious and scolding repeatedly. The scold notes were similar to Ruby-throated, but slower and not as harsh. After several cautious and noisy approaches, the capture was accomplished. The hummingbird was placed in a small cloth holding bag and again it scolded and gave the soft begging call typical of most immature hummingbirds when captured. This was one identification that could best be made in-the-hand. A quick visual examination in hand indicated our captured hummingbird was in the Archilochus genus; Ruby-throated and Black-chinned (A. alexandri) were the choices. Close examination of the wings showed the sweeping rounded curve of Primary #10, the outermost (see Fig. 1). Tennessee now officially had its first documented Black-chinned Hummingbird. This first state record bird was then banded with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service band #8000T17005. This tiny aluminum alloy band, weighing only one 8400th of an ounce, will hopefully be encountered by us or some other bird bander in the future. The following observations were then noted. The throat was gray with rows of dull bronze, gray-tipped feathers radiating outward from the base of the lower 1 2 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD MARCH FIG.l. Sub-adult male Black-chinned Hum- mingbird banded 6 November 1990 in Chattanooga, Tennes- see. Note the wide sweeping arc formed by the outermost pri- mary. A Ruby-throated would have a pointed wing with the outer- most primary nearly straight. Photo by Martha B. Sargent mandible to the upper breast, with one lone purple gorget feather shining. The breast, flanks, sides and underparts were dirty gray with much molt apparent. Puffy white femoral tufts, like tiny balls of cotton, protruded prominently above the folded wings. Undertail coverts were dull white with pale gray centers. The forehead and crown were dark gray-brown with a typical amount of plastered- down feathers caused by sticky nectar found in wildflowers in the fall, probably jewelweed (Impatiens carensis) and cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis). Much of the back and rump showed fresh plumage with new feathers that were a flat emerald green mingled with bronzy blue-green highlights. The central pair of rectrices were green on their basal two-thirds with a bronze-green sheen at the tip. Rectrix #2 had a black tip. Rectrix #3 had an area of white at the tip that was so small as to be unmeasurable. Rectrices #4 and #5 were broadly tipped with white and rectrix #5 was slightly emarginated and sharply pointed. Close examination of the upper mandible with a 16x jeweler's loupe revealed shallow incised striations over about 25 percent of the bill length. This, combined with the fresh body feathers and new inside flight feathers, indicated this Black-chinned Hummingbird was a hatching year sub-adult. The following measurements were taken: wing - 42.10mm, tail - 25.10mm, exposed cumen - 18.80mm, weight - 3.63 grams (some fat accumulation was noted on the lower belly). The width of the inner web of Primary #1 0 (measured 5mm from the tip) was 3.45mm. The pointed and emarginated shape of Rectrix #5, the tiny area of white at the tip of Rectrix #3 and the single gorget feather indicated the sex to be male. These criteria used to age, sex and identify species were from the excellent paper by Baltosser (1987). 1993 THE MIGRANT 3 This sub-adult male Black-chinned Hummingbird was identified in the presence of Lil Dubke and John Henderson. We are grateful for their presence and their assistance in making this possible. We would like to acknowledge not only the paper by Bill Baltosser, but the many telephone conversations and other communications in which he so generously shared his expertise. Our study of wintering hummingbirds continues not only in Tennessee, but in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. We encourage anyone who enjoys hummingbirds to leave a hummingbird feeder out year-round. Any hummingbird sighted between November 15th and March 1st is likely to be a Western or Mexican species. We would like to be notified promptly of any such sightings (telephone 205- 681-2888). LITERATURE CITED Baltosser, W.H. 1987. Age, species and sex determination of four North Ameri- can hummingbirds. Payne 5851 Ardwick Drive #4, Memphis, TN 38119^5715 On Sunday, 13 September 1992 at approximately 10:30 CDT, we observed a Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus) at the T.E. Maxson Sewage Treatment Plant in southwest Shelby County. The single bird was flying in a south-southeasterly direction, at telephone pole top height (about 9m 130 feet] above the ground), approximately 30m (30 yards) in front of our car. Observations were through Swift Audubon 8.5x44 and Traq 8x21 binoculars in good light for approximately five minutes. Other observers of the bird were Dr. William "Buzz" Bean, Kate Gooch, Dr. Robert & Ginger Ilardi, Theresa Irion and Susan McWhirter. The bird had a typical falcon shape, long pointed wings and a long tail, with black axillaries being the salient field mark. Other field marks were the overall light, sandy appearance, narrow black streaks below the eyes and a pale throat. The breast was streaked. The primary and secondary feathers were barred. Jeanne observed a light line above the eye and barring on the tail. The Prairie Falcon flew in a straight line, gaining altitude, until it was out of sight. Weather conditions were excellent with good light and little to no wind. A major cold front in the previous 48 hours had brought several unusual species to the Memphis area. Ten minutes previous to the sighting we had observed two Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) stoop on a mixed flock of shorebirds and had stopped to check two American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) on the power lines when the Prairie Falcon flew in front of us. All observers noted the large size, light coloration, and dark axillars. Bob and Ginger Ilardi were familiar with Prairie Falcons from trips out west. This bird was much paler than the Peregrine Falcons and had only a fine moustache mark below the eye instead of the hooded appearance of the Peregrine. It was much larger than the Kestrels. This is the third Shelby County and fifth state record of Prairie Falcon (Robinson, J.C. 1990, An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Tennessee, University of Tennessee Press, page 77). Accepted 9 November 1992. 4 The Migrant, 64 (1): 5-13, 1993. THE 1992 CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT Susan N. McWhirter Twenty-two individual counts were conducted across Tennessee for the 1992- 1993 Christmas Count season with a total of 144 species seen. As in the past few years, mild autumn-like temperatures continued into winter and resulted in numer- ous sightings of lingering migrants, with few northern irruptives seen. These lingering migrants included Great Egret, Green Heron, Sandhill Crane, Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Dunlin, swift and Empidonax sp.. Great Crested Flycatcher (1st CBC record). House and Sedge Wrens, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Gray Catbird, Indigo Bunting (2nd CBC record), and Lark, Le Conte's, and Lincoln's Sparrows. Other unusual species included the Oldsquaw, Golden Eagle, Iceland Gull (1st CBC record and possibly only the 2nd state record), and Great Black- backed Gull (3rd CBC record). CW indicates species seen the count week (three days prior to, or after, day of actual count); m.ob. indicates many observers; sp. indicates species. THE SEASON Robert P. Ford, Editor (Received for publication 1 February 1994) FALL MIGRATION: 1 AUGUST-30 NOVEMBER 1992 Weather for the fall season was relatively normal across the state, with no notable differences from the average. The general patterns of bird occurrence were also about average. Observers this season documented a few early migrants, but few other differences for our "regular" birds. However, outstanding rare birds did occur this season. A new state record occurred in west Tennessee, a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. This bird could easily claim to be the most watched bird of the season, as it stayed at the Earth Complex while people traveled from far distances for observations. Other rarities include a Swal- low-tailed Kite, a Hudsonian Godwit, and an Eurasian Wigeon observed. The Cumberland Plateau and Ridge and Valley Region seemed to have an especially productive season for rare birds. More details are provided there, as well as in the reports of other regional compilers. Abbreviations used in this report include: ad-adult; b-banded; EOP-end of period; ers-earliest sighting this season; et al.-and others; f-female; fide-reported by; Irs-latest sighting this season; m-male; max-maximum number recorded in one day; m.ob.-multiple observers; ph-photo; yg-young; "^-documentation submitted. WESTERN COASTAL PLAIN REGION — The fall season for west Tennessee was representative for the area and the expected species count, particularly along the Mississippi River. The temperatures and rainfall amounts were moderate for this time of year. Warbler migration seemed early based on several early date records. Some rare sightings were made in and around The EARTH Complex (TEC) in Shelby County and Island 13 in Lake County. The EARTH Complex was a resting site for a Willet, a Hudsonian Godwit, and the Common Ground-Dove. The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper stayed about a week and is a new state bird. Greater Scaup and Oldsquaw were seen at the EARTH Complex and American White Pelicans arrived early in Dyer and Lake counties. Among uncommon raptors, members of MTOS observed both a Merlin and a Prairie Falcon this season. Grebe-Duck: Horned Grebe: 21 Nov (8) Is 13 (WGC). Temperatures were about 3.5 degrees F below normal in August, 1 .5 degrees F below in September and about normal for the remainder of the period. The outstanding bird sightings of the period were the Eurasian Wigeon at Columbia, one of few Middle Tennessee records, and the Rufous Hummingbird, possibly the first record for an adult male of this species in the area. Other unusual sightings were the Greater White-fronted Goose, "Krider's" Red-tailed Hawk and a flock of Bobolink, rare here in the fall. Common Nighthawks were observed daily in Nashville through the end of November. The tern migration in early September had above normal numbers of several species. P. GALEN LENHERT, 3109 Overlook Drive, Nashville, TN 37212 1993 THE MIGRANT 19 CUMBERLAND PLATEAU/RIDGE AND VALLEY REGION _ This fall was somewhat cooler than most. The months of August, September and October had slightly below average temperatures, while November was near normal. Johnson City recorded the first frost of the season on 30 September. Seasonal precipitation varied considerably, from 18 in. (+3 in.) at Chattanooga to 9.5 in. (-2 in.) at Johnson City. Water levels in some lakes were kept high later into the season than in previous years, covering some shorebird habitat. Loss of much of the milfoil in Chickamauga Lake was blamed, in part, for reduced numbers of waterfowl there. The quality of birding seemed to be rather good this fall. Numbers of cormorants and Bald Eagles continue to increase. Shorebirds staged a pretty good flight, with the best reports from Kingston Steam Plant and some farm ponds at Limestone in Washington County. Eor the former location, it was the best season in many. The number of Black Tern reports were up, a good sign for this declining species. The ’ivarbler flight was generally described as decent. On the other hand, ducks and boreal species, especially Purple Finch, were in short supply. Reports of Fulvous Whistling-Duck, American Swallow-tailed Kite and Black-headed Grosbeak were remarkable. The Austin Springs banding station was operated for the thirteenth consecutive autumn. Mist nets were run from 1 September to 10 November, with 452 birds of 40 species banded — about normal. RECENT CHANGES IN TAXONOMY The Thirty-ninth Supplement to the A.O.U. Check-list {Auk 110: 675-682, 1993) reports the most recent changes in taxonomy and nomenclature adopted for North American birds. Only three changes affect Tennessee ornithology. These will be incorporated into The Migrant beginning with this issue. Green-backed Heron reverts to the previous common and scientific names Green Heron {Butorides virescens). This form and a primarily South American form are allopatric during breeding, with no evidence of intergrades. Black-shouldered Kite, a vagrant to Tennessee, reverts to the previous common and scientific names White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucimis). This New World form is split from the Old World form(s). Lesser Golden-Plover is split into American Golden-Plover (Pluvialis dominica), occurring widely in North America, and Pacific Golden-Plover (P. fulva), whose North American range is generally confined to the West Coast. Both forms breed in Alaska, but show differences in behavior and habitat. RICHARD L. KNIGHT, Asst. Editor 24 INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS The Migrant records observations and studies of birds in Tennessee and adjacent areas. Most articles are written by members of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. SUBMISSIONS: The original and, if feasible, two copies of the manuscript should be sent to the Editor: J. Wallace Coffey, 1 00 Bellebrook Dr., Bristol, TN 37620. Manuscripts that have been published in other journals should not be submitted. MATERIAL: The subject matter should relate to some phase of Tennessee ornithology. It should be original, factual, concise, and scientifically accurate. STYLE: Both articles and short notes are solicited; recent issues of The Migrant should be used as a guide in the preparation of manuscripts. Where more detail is needed, reference should be made to the CBE Style Manual; this book is available at many public libraries and from the Council of Biology Editors, Inc., Ill East Wacker Drive, Suite 3200, Chicago, IL 60601 -4298. COPY: Manuscripts should be typed double spaced on 8.5 x IT' paper with adequate margins for editorial notations. Tables should be prepared on separate sheets with appropriate title and column headings. Photographs intended for reproduction should be sharp with good contrast on glossy white paper; black and white photographs will usually reproduce better than color photographs. Weights, measurements, and distances should be in metric units. Dates should be in "continental" form (e.g., 16 March 1992). Use the 24-hour clock (e.g., 0500 or 1900). NOMENCLATURE: The scientific name of a species should be given after the first use of the full common name in the text. The scientific name should be underlined and in parentheses. Names should follow the A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds (sixth edition, 1983, or supplements). TITLE: The title should be concise, specific, and descriptive. ABSTRACT: Manuscripts of five or more typed pages should include an ab- stract. The abstract should be less than 5% of the length of the manuscript. It should include a brief explanation of why the research was done, the major results, and why the results are important. LITERATURE CITED: List ail literature citations in a Literature Cited section at the end of the text. Text citations should include the author and year. IDENTIFICATION: Manuscripts including reports of rare or unusual species or of species at atypical times should be submitted to the TOS Bird Records Commit- tee. Verifying evidence should include: date, time, light and weather conditions, exact location, habitat, optical equipment, distance, behavior of bird, comparison with other similar species, characteristic markings, experience of observer, other observers verifying the identification, and reference works consulted. REPRINTS: Reprints are available to authors on request. Billing to authors will be through the TOS Treasurer. SEASON REPORTS: Observations that are to be considered for publication in The Season section should be mailed to the appropriate Regional Compiler. Consult a recent issue of The Migrant for the name and address of the compilers. CONTENTS FIRST DOCUMENTED OCCURRENCE OE BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD IN TENNESSEE Robert R. Sargent and Martha B.
