Rec. Jan 7 18ÿ8 Viena Ans. Paris July 25. - Geneva, Dec. 28, 185$ My dear Sir, | was prevented of responding to your amiable letter any earlier, because for the last month | have been sadly preoccupied. We have had the pain of loosing our father, who was taken from us by a jaundice that at first did not worry us but soon thereafter took on a very alarming course. As soon as | was able to, | took your advice in regards the Euphorbia procumbens Dc. and planted the seeds in my herbarium ( a second envoy should have been sent by Mr Gray, but he has not done it). included is a fragment, the only one that Mr. Reuter and Muller have for study This is sufficient to give me an idea of the species. | thank you so much for the clarifications that you will be so kind to give me on the Euphorbia, and that | hope you will continue doing. ! would love it if you would take charge of the Prodromus of the work in regard the “stipulata”, that have been studied by none except Mr. de Candolle. This portion of the Prodromus will not be complete for at least one year. By then 1 will have published our results on the Chamaesyce, and | hope | will be able to profit from this knowledge. We have received the envoy from Mr. Asa Gray, containing the new editions of his writing is simply awfull. } | am embarrassed that you tell me that Mr Gray has had financial losses . His work will be of great value for many future publications. | will correct with determination the Euphorbia collection of Wright, according to the list in your letter. L MISSOURI BOT L' GARE GEORGE ENGELMANN PAPERS MISSOURI | BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN Boissier, E. Rec Aug. 1 Ans. Aug 17 Orbe, July 9, 1860 Dear Sir, | have two of your letters, the first from April 10; | received them during my trip to England and Paris, the second of June 6 has just arrived |! thankfully have the small booklet about Euphorbia sent by Mr. Mettenius, but the other booklet sent by Mr. Asa Gray and which should have been sent together with the Quercus of Mr. de Candoblle, probably remained in New York... The Quercus arrived at his house 3 weeks ago. We looked for but could not find the Euphorbia in the packagel!. | am desolate because there are not many species as important as this for me. The Euphorbia lucida, tetraspora, ocellata, etc. etc.did not arrive and | ask you dear Sir to replace this unfortunate package and send me another via the fastest route. In regards the installment, it has been of great help to obtain some species. | will send you all you wish. | a…m delighted to have been in Paris and specially in London where | found many items to write about. | also went to Leyden for the 3 species of Blumea and to Rostock to visit the herbarium of Lamarche. The Euphorbia indica Lam | have named E. cassioides Presl; the E. Braziliensis Lam is the Klotschiana Prel. the E microphylla is the thymifolia, duriforma, influtescens, etc. etc. | took samples from the herbarium of Michana. These were E. polygonifolia Mich., E. Curtisit and gracilis. The samples differ from the Curtissii. It is largely eliptic semina faveolata or punctata. | believe you have the E. paniculata Elliot or a variety of the corulata. Please tell me how you have studied this variety so that | can apply this knowledge to my samples. | presume that this insidious state is smaller and has more flowers. The Euphorbia kleinis Schlecht is not the corrigioloides. | could not adapt to these names when | did my studies. You talked to me about the E. coccinea Roth that you had seen at the herbarium of St. Petersburg. Âre you sure that you saw it at that herbarium? | was there for a long time and could not find it even after a most meticulous search. The E. coccinea could correspond to the description of Roth. Could you please send me the description that you have made? This singular species of Roth is not known here. The E. clusiaefolia Hook is entirely different from the E. Engelmanni (obliquifolia, depressa,). The E. Indica Lam-cassioides Piesi=Piesi=decumbens=-Wild=alcinoides Miquel. It is this form of Orientalis that one finally compares to the E. hypericifolia and which | find distinctive. It is really the E.parviflora Linn=(pap;;igera Boiss Cent.) This latter one has smooth seeds and under the magnifying glass has small areas of roughness.! The E. viscidula is in reality the E. Meyerniana, like the one | saw in Berlin. You have some samples that are of E. dioeca and E. adenoptera. It is the last name that | chose. 6 7 8 9 10 MISSOURI | BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN 2 There are frequently 5 plants and more frequently 6, that constitute small groups of Anisophylum Braziliensis ( E. Chamaerrhodos, potentillioides, coecorum, etc.) The characteristic of the presence or absence of the caruncula is quite constant. There IS never-the-less a plant similar to the E. lanacea Webb impossible to distinguish from the E. provincialis Lamm and it has no caruncula!. Where do you have that E. cactoide called E. paniculata? lf possible send me a description of the apices and acorns that are indented. None has involuted fingers. The Euphorbia abyssinica you talked about and the E. longituberculosa callitricoides are really quite unique. In the herbarium in Berlin there is the E. Palestrii = callitrichoides Klotsch. It is for me very Similar to the Euphorbia sanguinea and perhaps it is the E. chyncana. | thank you a thousand times for the magnificent volume on the Cactaceae and also for the interesting monograph of the Cudentalies. The Michana herbarium is part of the Richard herbarium that belongs to Mr. Fianqueville in the Palatine of Paris. He is a very complacent man. It is where you can find the vagabond Euphorbia prostata. In Sicily it is the E. perforata Guss. The E: ricilidera is similar to the E. Wallidiana and the E. Engelmanni according to your notes. They are without doubt very close to the Centuria euphorbia. There are several types to chose from; since | have seen the herbarium of Paris and London and here | am able to name 30 or 40 new species that could be material for new publications. Because the Journal of Euphorbia will be published at the end of the winter, | believe it would not be worth the while. Klotzsch has finished his memoir on the Tricocere Herb. aerolinensis (Gender Euphorbia pedilonthus of Mr. Dummiler. It is his fourth paper out of 146. | suspect you have one. | will be in contact with the author extermely frequently. | admit that there are a great number of species. | believe you have received similar specimen. | have frequent contact with the author. | would certainly like to publish a synopsis of the Euphorbia Americana bornalis. | have always wanted to communicate with you under the most pleasurable circumstances and tell you what | am doing. | am sure we will frequently differ in our opinions. You do not believe that the E. polyclada is different from the E. petaloidea. Please look again into the boxes. There is such a difference between the flowers and the capsules, etc. Again many thanks for all your observations,etc.etc. Every time |! have plants under my eyes | learn something different. | do not have plans to study the Euphorbia that are in Paris from Madagascar. At Kew there are many Phyllum from New Holland. There are also many things from India (Anysophyllum). The species of Borbough are no place nor are the ones from Boyle. NE 0.1: 2. 3, 4 56 7 8. 9 10 DUR BOTANICAL cm : copyright reserved Gate pied 3 It would be good to know if the herbarium of Schauer has Euphorbia leptalea and velligera. The description of these does not correspond to the name of E. vestita. Yes, dear Sir, we have like you say to much French Boundary. This country is small and | hope that the French goverment will be able to keep it stable. ‘For today | say goodbye. 1! will try to find your first installment. ! will write you at the end of summer or early autumn. | will take some time to make a small excursion in the Alps, | salute you with affection and with devotion.. Rec. March 16, 1861 Ans. March 29 Geneva February 17, 1861 My dear Sir, | do not know why it took me so long to give you signs that | was alive. The two previous pages have been written several weeks ago, and it is not until today that after so many occupations | am completing them. To start with | appreciate your comments on the Euphorbia tetrapora and the examination of the E. lucida.. You seems to have been very satisfied with that one. As it did not have any fruit | was unable to make a complete description of this species. | am busy in putting all my work together so that | can send it to Mr. De Candolle. | am very satisfied at having been able to finish it. The classification of the gender gives me much trouble. ! don't believe that it will ever be totally satisfactory as | am missing some ofthe characteristics. | do not have enough information on the seeds, the inflorescence, the curuncules, the stylus, etc. (The remainder of this letter has deteriorating script with many, many latin names and botanical descriptions that | cannot assume to translate correctly.) Rec May 1 Ans May 17 Geneva April 2, 1861 My dear Mr. Engelmann, [ am late in responding to your last letter. Last January I was so busy just as all winter, that my correspondence has suffered. Finally, here 1s my article on the Euphorbia which will be related only to the Euphorbia. There are 680 Euphorbia ( perhaps a few species more that have not been researched). The Pedilanthus(?); 2 Synadissima (?) New species remarkable because all the olands are buried in a capsule in the involutionary lobes and finally the E. Anthostema(?). These are the descriptions that I have made and I anxiously await your critique, as I admit that my work is not always perfect. The fragments that you sent me in your last letter, unfortunately arrived quite bruised, which 1s usually the case. I rely on your good description of the E. oymnoclada that I placed with the E. peganoides. But you did not remember that 1 already described a E. gymnoclada Ariz. Engelmanni. Do you approve of this name? The plant from Fort Texas seems to be the E. albamarginata and E. Hartwegi that can be differentiated by the characteristics that I mentioned. Are there perhaps several forms of the E. albamarginata? In any case I took a sample of the E. polycarpa to the herbarium and I saw another one that was longer and that was very similar to the samples of Parry from California. The leaves are much bigger that the other plants of the same species. [ will send the peaces of our Euphorbia to Prof. Mettenius, and I will ask him to forgive me for the delay. You knew that the poor Mr. Klotsch has been sick for a long time, already several months. It 1s Mr Hanstein who now has the herbarium in Berlin. Mr. de Candolle is not finding too many difficulties with his work, as he has not found too many new subjects. In Europe we are always uncertain about what may happen in the summer. Some believe that there will be peace but others think that war is inevitable. If it would explode it will be terrible. (there are five lines that I cannot understand). I believe I will be able to send you some samples of the Euphorbia but 1t will not be this vear. 1 have not finished the publications as I am waiting for the drawings and for the engravings from the lithographer. I thank you again a thousand times for your extreme kindness in furnishing me with notes and material. for which you have gone through many difficulties. Please send me news from yourself and take my affectionate greetings. E. Boissier PD I had already closed this letter when I received in Leipzig your cheery note. I will think of you when I see the Cuscuta and the Alimaciae.. Please tell me how to cultivate the ? May 31 Valeynes, Dec. 12, 1868 My Dear Mr. Engelmann, | have to tell you that | have been delayed, because we spent some time, my family and | bathing in the sea at Bordeaux, and then went to the Pyrenees. When I returned | found your letter and saw that | had lost the fine occasion of seeing you and shaking your hand after so many years and the opportunity to ask you many things. Happily you mention that perhaps you will return to Geneva, next year andifitis in the spring | Will definitely go to Geneva or will be here later on. | have received your Juncorum Herbarium Normale and | see that a simple inspection of samples tell me how difficult this gender is, because the stem of several of these species is the same and even the seeds look very much alike. It has been a long time since 1 have been in Geneva. | plan to return and will probably find your work on the Juncus that you had promised me and for which 1 thank you in advance. | will also take your Euphorbia that ! had forgotten. Since the publication of the Prodromus 1! have not had the occasion to review this gender. | will profit from your permission to take a sample and return the rest to you if you come. | would like to send you something but | only have plants from the Orient. | was interested to learn that you like the Isoetes. For the first time of my life, this summer, | had the opportunity to collect living plants of this unusual gender, namely, the Isoetes lacustris and echinospora that you found in abundance in the Lakes of Guery and Auvergne, with Mr. Reuter. | will send some to you which | hope will be interesting. My friend Mr. Reuter thought he had understood that you would be in Italy during the winter. | wish to compliment you in trying to avoid our ugly winter here. Since the first of November we where in Switzerland for the snow but it was only very cold and we were surrounded by fog. Our friend Mr. Gray must be in Egypt. | believe he said that he wanted to spend the winter there. | have several friends that do the same. | am always very busy with the Flora Orientalis that takes up much of my time. There are some large genders that are difficult and for which | am going to make a monographic study. But | have to hurry because the materials have a short life. The Ambilliforme give me much trouble as the samples are incomplete and because they to not produce fruit. Therefore one can only classify them with difficulty. Then there is the question of gender which is always very difficult in a family that is so wild. Last summer | received from Mr Sulander a very beautiful collection of plants from California. Unfortunately the majority of the specimen were not labeled. What a magnificent flora exists in the mountains of California, and how many species grow only as ornamental plants.! When will our friend Asa Gray begin writing about the Flora of the United States? It is work that is indispensable because of multitude of species that have been discovered and described in the past years. My dear Mr. Engelmann, please give me some news from you. | hope | can see you again in Geneva. | am still sorry at not having been able to see you. During the spring and winter | am usually here. Rec. Oct. 5. Ans. Oct. 25 Valyeres, Sept. 16, 1875 My dear Mr. Engelmann, lhad very great pleasure in receiving news from you. | must send you all my apologies regarding the package of Euphorbia that | had misplaced for so many years in my home! You know how time passes specially if one is busy with a great deal of work. Therefore | always postponed the examination of the Euphorbia which | now have to send you without having studied them! You did not loose a great deal, because | lost a gender already for years and therefore your opinion could not have been useful. | have returned from an excursion in the Alps and found your letter. | did not have time to send you the plants that | was not able to study and that ! have here in my herbarium. You only sent me five specimen of Euphorbia from California and of those five | kept only fragments of two for de Candolle and for myself, the E. melanadenia and the E. ocellata. Of the three others there was not enough to divide. The rest of the package contained species of Euphorbia of Wright in Cuba where there are many samples of which |! will send you some. Lastly ! kept for myself and de Candolle some samples of 7? and of Wofffia, thinking that ! had duplicates which were destined for you. | thank you. | sent de Candolle a total of 5 specimens. Today | will send you through the mail, a small package, in which | have marked the five types of Euphorbia from California that have been described. | am very happy to have received the Rocky Mountain samples and the plants that you have allowed me to have. They have given me great pleasure. Would you like me to send you some plants? | have at my disposal a pretty collection of Olympia from Bithynie. Write me if you want them. | am happy to learn that the flora of California is doing well. À few years ago | received a beautiful collection from Bolander. Does he still do excursions to collect plants and does he sell them? 1! would like to enlarge my collection of California plants. | have not received the samples of Yucca that you wanted to send me. | believe vou are confused in regards the Lauderer plants, it is possible that Meissner wrote vou about them. This summer we had a distraction because of a hail storm that in town, only caused some damage to the windows. Mr. de Candolle nor | suffered any damage. Dear Mr. Engelmann please tell me if you have received the package. Allow me to thank you again and tell you of the pleasure | have receiving your letters. | am happy to know that vou are in good health and that you continue your extensive botanical work. | am still working on the Flora Orientalis, but | progress slowiy. You know that | had the misfortune of loosing my very good friend, Mr. Reuter. This has been very painful for me because he was such a great help to me. Again, many apologies for my delay. | send you may greetings. Your devoted E. Rec. May 18 Ans. June 2 Geneva May 2, 1880 Dear Sir, It has been à very great pleasure to receive news from you. | have also found your splendid volume on the Pinus that you sent to me, having as intermediary Mr de Candolle. Please accept my many thanks for this lovely gift and also for your other works that you have sent me from time to time. All this gives me an idea of your infatigable activity. Your letter makes an alusion of a great pain that you have gone through last year. | knew nothing of this, not having received letters for a long time. | gather from what you write that you have lost an object of your great affection. | sympathize very vividiy with you as | have gone through this great sorrow with the loss of my dear wife. | send you my condolensces. Work is probably the best thing under these sad circumstances. | am working on a fifth volume which will finish this project and 1! will publish it In {wo parts, leaving for a little later the graminacee (grasses), of which | have not yet begun the studies. It will be with the greatest pleasure that ! will send you the Flora Orientalis. According to your letter 1 have already sent the 4th volume, that includes the Corollifliora. Do you have a complete volume or only a portion? Please tell me without delay, and I will promptly send you the rest of the work, but please tell me through what courier | should do this. | would like to expedite this to avoid too much cold. The samples of Euphorbia interest me alot ( similar to those in the Prodromus). The viable Pinus, etc. that you could send me later would also be welcome. During the past years | have made short excursions to the north of Spain where the tall mountain range “The Picos de Europa”, as yet unexplored have excited my curiosity. | found an interesting Flora but for the most part the species are entirely those of the Pyrenees. You have a son that helps you in the practice of medicine, and who is also more or less a botanist. | also have the pleasure of having a son in law that has taken to botany with great zeal. He will publish a work on the “Grilobia”. In this way, dear Mr. Engelmann, |! will await from you a clarification on the subject of the Flora Orientalis. | take the opportunity to send you my sentiments of affection. E.
