ankamen und die Pferdeeisenbahn zur Halfte versaımten. Meine Frau
hatte noch viele Taxe Eisenbahn Schwindel, war aber sonst wohl.
Die Kleine verspielte und verschlief die Reise wie ein resundes
Kind es immer tun kann. - Gestern zum ersten Male stellten sich

wieder heftige Krampfe bei meiner Frau ein und heute ist sie gze-
sunder als je. Hoffentlich ist dies die letzte Nachwehe con der

gelucklich uberstardenen Eisenbahnreise. Wir werden in einem Boar-
Ainzhaus der Mrs. kEsterly an Pensylvania Ave. wohnen. Kommen Sie
recht bald - es ist noch viel Platz im Hause. Das Wetter ist

schon ‚„obzleich etwas kühler als gewöhnlich. Die Spyaziereangze sind

ausserst niedlich, die staatlichen Platze sehr sauber sehalten und

Land, Wale und Feld.- Ich denke dass Washinston die schonste Stadt
in Amerika ist. Besonders anzenehm fällt es uns auf, dass man hier
keine zeckenhaften Kaufleute und Kaufmannsdierer in ihrer Aufze-
Dlasenheit sieht. Die Menschen denen man auf der Strasse bergernet
sind bescheiden und doch reicher gekleidet, und erscheinen mehr

sollde. Washington wird spater vielleicht die schonste Residenz-

colleetions arrived in good shape according to Adans & Co, Ex-
press; also the laree Fir-cone, which indeed is much larser than
the one you already own.- Somebody has spread the enjoyable mu -
mor, that you telerraphed to Philadelphia, that you will leave
St. Louis this week to travel to New York. Will you carry this
out ? All is inviting for this, and we would be specially glad
as therewith all kinds of difficulties would be eliminated, such
as the classififcation of the collections and the contact with
men of science interested in the collections, who would enrich
the report throuseh their remarks,.

Besides the aforementioned general overview map about the
.sreeee Di Sne various departments, which returned from the field,
no reneral summary or overview of all maps seems to be in the
works, except perhaps a resume by the minister of war,prepared
by himself, sittply then his own report to Consress. It seems that
at present everything existing is under lock and key of some
officers who are away and have taken the keys with them or are
hidine them carefully, so that nobody can find them. The sane

applies to operating money, we stand here as on coals with empty

Our trip here was without mishap. My wife, who wants
to be specially remembered to you, and the little-one, who
speaks often of the "dotter" (doctor,E.D.), arrived well in
Washinston. Much contributed to this the one day stay at Nia-
gara. The most troublesome part of the itinerary is the section
from New York to here. We travelled at nisht and had to change
cars three times, had to take ferryboats three times, and an
Omnibus in Baltimore on top of all this, where we arrived in
soundest sleep at 2 o.c. in the morring and half of us missed
the horse-railroad. My wife felt nauseated for several days but
was well otherwise. The Little-one played and slept throush the
trip as is normal for a healthy child.- Yestefday my wife had
again severe cramps but today she feels better than ever..
Hopefully this is the last aftershock of a successful railroad
itinerary. We shall live at the boardinshouse of Mrs.Esterly
on Pensylvanria Avenue... &ome soon, there is lots of room in
the house. The weather is fine, thoush a little cooler than
normal. Walks are extremely nice, the public places kept very
clean and the landscape a mixture of hills and valleys, woods
and fields. I believe that Washington is the most beautiful
city in Amerika. IT conceive it as most eratifying, that one
does not see dandyfied merchants and the servants of merchants
with their arrosgsance. The people one meets on the street are
modest and yet well dressed and appear more solid. Washineton
may later perhaps become the most beautigul redidential city..
I would like to make several remarks about local conditions,
if the post would not hurry me, as I would like to mail these
lines immediately to you„.Should I send you a few minor items

from the collections and the cones ? and with which opportunity ?

The departure of Doctor Schiel gives me the chance to
send to you these lines and a small package with plants.. Your large
cone from the Sierra Nevada has been shipped throush great nerlizence
to Mr. Torrey in New York:with the remaining collection. I have
had serious disputes concerning this misdeed of our botanists,.
which „however, had no results..The cone can only be reclaimed throush
your own effort. By-the-way I promise to you that I shall take care,

Intellirenz (spitzige, die niemals wirkt ) um sich mit einem sol-

recht gern wenn ich den Zapfen ınterwegs meinen Bekannten zeigen
darf ", so lautete auch eine Antwort. Am offensten aber war doch

Until today I believed that I would return to St.

Louis, only the when appeared doubtful. That was the reason

that I did not send the cones to you earlier, because with
the people of the Congress you can't get anywhere,. they have
too little sense and too much intellirence ( the pointed'
kind that never works) to dragzx such a monster with them.
Besides there were no expenses involved. " Yes, with delleht;
if I may show the cones on the trip to my aquaintances",such
was one of the answers. Most outspoken was Phelps, sayine

he knew too little about St.Louis to undertake such delive-
tical shepherd in Springfield and has no relation to the St.
Louis sheep in case he would cause a hole with his shears.
This one can see well here in Washineton at the time of the
wool market (Congress)/ Carefully the large wool traders (
the Cabinet) weigh the quality and qantity before the pay

Sie werden mit Recht auf ein Lebenszeichen von mir zewartet ha-
ben und ich will nun versuchen Ihnen eine flüchtige Skizze von
der letzten Monaten entwerfen.: Sie werden sich erinnern, dass
wir mit vleler Mihe und nur nach grossen Anstrensungen eine
Appropriation von 49,200 im Congress durchsetzten. Hierbei war
ich ( der einziee Linilist (2??? E.D.) leider gendtiet politisch
zu proparandieren. Wie Sie wissen werden steht der Kriegsminis-
ter in Opposition mit der Majoritat des Hauses, ferner trat uns
das Vorurteil, das die Consressmitzlieder gegen die Armeeoffizle-
re hezen höchst hinderlich in den Weg.- Mr. Kennit und Mr.Phelps
unterstützten uns nach Kräften. Die Hauptforce wırde durch die-
se Herren zebildet, welche bei Rebensaft und Ganseleber. gaste-
ten’die Arbeiten in meinem Privathause inspirierten. Nichts geht
über das Sehen, Schmecken und Fühken. wir sind alle Hnachen tan.
len uns nur dann beharlich und zutraulich, nachdem gewisse phy-
sische Bedürfnisse ihre volle Befriediesung gefunden haben. Selbst
Leute wie Governeur Aiken (Millionair) von S.Carolina wurde Herz-
licher und verrass auf Momente seine garstische Folitik.- Meine
Arbeiten haben einen tiefen Eindruck gemacht und mir viele Freun-
de, aber vielleicht noch mehr Feinde verschafft. Dem topoer.

man in näheren Verkehr mit den Leitern im Congress zu sehen,. und
Gebrauch’ machen von Arbeiten, deren Tragweite sie nicht einnal

Most esteemed Sir:

You will rishtfully have expected a sisen of life from
me, and I shall try now to project a flishty sketch of the last
months. You will remember, that we pushed through an appropria-

49,200 in the Congress after much labor and zreat ef-
forts. In this process, I, the only Linilist (? E.D.) was unfor-
tunately forced to make political propasanda. As you may know,

the minister of

War stands in opposition to the majority in the
House; further; the prejudices of members of Congress arainst
army officers were great impediments on the route,- Mr.Kennit
and Mr. Phelps helped us forcefullys The main force was formed by
these zentlemen, who „ dininge on grapeiuices and zeoose-liver
found the inspiration in my private home, . Nothing exceeds Seeing,
Tasting and Feeling, We are all human, becominz only then comfor-
table and trusting after certain physical needs have found their
satisfaction. Even people like Governor Aiken ( a millionair)
became friendlier, forgetting for moments his nasty politics,

My labors made a deep impression, producing many friends but
perhaps even more enemies. The topographic corps just could not
get it in their head, to see a g.d. dutchnman in close contact with
the leaders-of Congress, .by ustng data ( verbatim: works, E.D.)
the sienificance of which they could not even foresee. Now, we
have the $ 49,200 and a new song beeins, the fuss apparently be-

for the presidency. My surroundines took in part vivid positions
in the political combinations and it became quite difficult to get

The colonel has taken a fast start, and, unless the party makes
serious mistakes, he will be elected. I am sad to have to observe
these developments in inactivity, while persons of lesser experience
and knowledge of the situation try to achieve this metamorphosis
through artificial magic. Every bloom needs a Certain time to
unfold of its own and for the enjoyment of those who cared for it..
A great deal of diegeinz and ruminatinge has taken place her to find
subjects, which would anle the colonel if they were brousht into
the licht. This method (personalities) will not bring the Bkmocrats

to the goal, but, in reverse, provides ever more .chances for the

oppo, rtunity to say, whathe has accomplished. I was most surprised
to see the German Heckers arise from the erave.. The preparations
for this election battle have been carried out excellently, and
give honor to the instigators of the movenent. - Daily arrive here

My present labors are as in the Ypast something new and are
well received.. It is however very desirable, that new expeditions
will come along and give me the opportunity to bringe my collected
strength and experience to the market..Grey, dear friend is all

Dear Sir,

I take the liberty of sending a letter and package to
General Fremont under your name. The importance of placing said
documents in the hands of the Genral may render my excuse In
doinz so. You have certaily your hands full in these days, when
all appears fomenting. I have zone to Philadelphia for a few
weeks to finish some of my steel plates, the last of the kind,
which I verhaps shall ever finish,

There is a time for everything. Now, military affairs
occupy all minds, supersede the ordinary, ovation. How is your
brother situated, perhaps he is taking an active part in the Ge-
neral Army. I must leave today for New York to settle some little
private business or else I would continue to write a more exnli-

cit letter to you, for there is much to be said, concerning

affairs in general and also in regards the present organization s
of the Volunteer Army around us.

I will return day after tomorrow from New York and shall
remain here. Please write two lines, the mere acceptance of these
papers, so I can rest confident of the receipt of the same by the
General, whom I also neglected to return receipt.

My kindest regards to Mrs. Dr. Enselmann, your brother
and such of our ols friends as will recollect me yet.
