GEORGE. ENGELMANN Parsak 3. 9 10 Mıssour1ı BOTANICAL GARDEN Engler, A. 1879, Dece, ber 21st Kiel, Germany TRANSLATION Kiel, Botanical Garden 2lst December 1879 Dr. Engelmann, in St. Louis. In April of next year, the undersigned intends to publish a new botanical Journal under the title "Jahrbücher für Pflanzengeographie, Pflanzengeschichte und wissenschaftliche Systematik" (Transl.: Yearbooks for plant geography, plant history and scientific systematics.) This should preferrably contain original articles for the purpose of enlarging the knowledge of the development in the plant world. It is not the intention of the publisher to further widespread phylogentic hypothesis, but he has the inten- tion to collect as much material as possible in one journal which appears now in numerous scattered publications of various societies and which are very often hard to get access to. If some fragmentary notes, as descriptions of new living or other genera of a family or an area will not be excluded, the publisher still prefers to include such works which deal with the sum of experiences in one connection; therefore, also such works will be preferred which concern such morphological and anatomical treatments concerning relationships and to which extent anatomical characteristics go together with morphological characterics and which support or do not support the previous opinion of the natural relationship. For such articles accepted by the publisher, which may consist of three sheets, a fee of 30 Marks per printed sheet will be paid. Apart from the original treatments, also reviews of the more important publica- tieas in the pertinent fields will be accepted, possibly soon after their appearance. Also, original treatments in French or English will be accepted, since prob- ably everybody who is interested in the publication of such a journal will be able to read these languages. To begin with, the journal shall be published as a quarterly. Hoping, that you dear Sir, will soon send the undersigned a contribution, I remain sincerely yours, A. Dear Doctor, I should appreciate very much if I could have for my journal, of which the first issue shall be published in April with contributions of O. Heer and DeCandolle, also a contribution from you, Asa Gray or Lesquerreux. It should be possible that you publish the same article in my journal as well as in St. Louis. It is my intention to concentrate in one journal more material of importance to plant geography. So many journals are now open almost exclusively for physiology and the history of development; Linnaea which filled its task for the systematics will soon cease to exist. In any event, please always send me your separates so that they may be included in the literature report which appears twice a year. Of your previous papers, I own the one about the oaks, Juncus and Abies; however, not the ones about Yucca, the Agaves and Cactaceae. In my works on plant geography, good monographs are very important; based on them, one can find more certain results than by using the floras. Couldn't you perhaps move somebody in North America to publish the American conifers completely (branches and cones)? The labels must contain the special locality of the geographical distribution in detail. For the collector concerned, it should be wörthwhile; Mr. Keck in Aistershaim in Upper Austria, would be the best man to commission with the distribution of such a collection.
