BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN Count d’'Epremesil Society of Acclimatization Founded February 10, 1854 Recognized Establishment of Public Utility by Decree of February 26, 1855 Kec Lec. 1! Ans, ? 1! Paris, September 29,1882 Rue de Marignan 19 Doctor, My friend M ? Ch- Nandin encouraged me to address your goodness to obtain information in regards to the differentiation of american plants. I would like to buy some, as many are still rare in Europe. I collected in the Gulf of Juan on the shore of the Mediterranean ( in the region of Orange), an important collection of Palms, Cicadas, Fougeria, Agaves and Cactacee. This collection prospers marvelously in the fresh air and I would like to complete it principally in regards the Cactacea and the Agaves. Until now I did not know who to address myself to, to ask for large specimens of Echinocereus, Echinocactus, etc. similar to the ones seen at the Universal Exposition of Philadelphia. I also do not know where to obtain the Agave Victoria Regina (needing small seedlings), Agave Virginica, Palmeri, Guttata, etc. I believe these are the only ones that are missing in my catalogue. I am much less rich in Cacti and my desires are many. L'have hoped that you would be so good, dear Doctor, to guide me in all my searches and that you will give me the names and addresses of the people who could furnish me with the different plants mentioned above. I hope that your horticultural passion is as big as mine. Please accept the expressions of my most distinguished sentiments. Feb. 28 Ans. March 26. Paris Rue de Marignan 19 February 14, 1883 My Dear Sir, You had the kindness, for which I thank vou, to write to different collectors of succulents. I had also written them and I send you the responses that I received. I think I will get lost in the middle of all that information. I would be most appreciative if you could order for me the few plants that I wish to have. [ would like to have one or two types to begin with. For example an Echinocactus one or two feet in height, a Cylindracea, Texensis or Wislizeni and 25 Agave Victoria Regina (young) ( list of Mr. Parish). That is all I desire to begin my experience of having plants sent to me from their country of origin. Only after several visits to the Parisien horticulturalists that sell large plants, I learned that very frequently the specimen sent without having had any care, died, but did not without having produced roots. The same does not occur with the Agave that in general survive very well. I would prefer therefor if you would have them send me the Echinocactus with all its roots in a sac. I will have to pay more for their purchase. The plants will have to be addressed to New York, to Mr. Seager of the Steamboat Company of New York in Marseille, to be sent to Mr Rene of St. Foix in Marseille. The latter will deliver them to me. If you would take charge of this commission I will send you immediately the address that you have mentioned, the necessary sum for the acquisition and the transport of these plants. I will also give Mr. Seager the necessary instructions. [ wrote Mr. Falcon to obtain seeds of young Agave Victoria Regina, however I did not receive an answer. If my requisition should cause you the slightest trouble, I pray that you consider and agree to it. With my thanks, I assure you of my distinguished considerations. Count d’Epremesil If in the list of seeds from Mr. Parish you should find some interesting names, I would like to ask you to please send me some packets through the mail. translation Manfred Thurmann 7 8 9 10 MISSOUR'I BOTANICAL copyright reserved CARDEN €, Al Ad CE LES LS cs o . 7 Lil er 7 1207 / fe Z j LC # / 7 DLL LAS Mrs DA à ei se LL Las à CA. . 7 ; _ - I fl TC Tac ce Psy 2 eu 2 APTE Ce Zefre 2 A . April 9 Paris, Rue de Marignan 19 March 24, 1883 Dear Sir, Here then, thanks to your kindness, are these known facts: 1- Two or three samples of the Echinocactus Wislizeni, with good roots and well packed. 2- Twenty five Agave Victoria Regina. I would like to know the amount that I owe you for the plants, for their packaging and for the transport to New York.I will send a check via San Francisco. If you would be so kind to send me two or three specimen, each from three to five feet tall of Cereus giganteus, | would be very appreciative. Excuse me I beg you, for the trouble I have given you all for our love of plants and please take my most distinguished best wishes. Count d’Epremesil I hope that I can be useful to you in some way here in Paris. Please do not hesitate to tell me so that I can be of help to you. The plants must be adressed to Count de Ephremesil in care of Mr. Seeger, agent of the Steamboat Company between New York and Marseille, in New York ( Mr Seeger is aware of this and will send the plants through the Gulf of Juan) translation Manfred Thurmann 9 10 MISSOUR:1 : | BOTANICAL copyright reserved CARDEN
