If I need an excuse for writing to you without! preliminaries,, it must be the lively interest, which I take for a long time in the family of Cacti. I’became aware of you for the first time throush the catalogue from this year of Mr..Pfersdorff,. But this catalogue with its simple plant names, spoke to me very clearly, because I learned from it, that you visited all the areas: in Mexfco, which I vivised' 18 years ago, and collected that you'zenk seeds of all the beautiful plants: and sent them to Eu- rope, which I collected thenmyself in many specimens.. But of all those original specimens-only ver_y few are presently erowing, and specially the most beautiful abyy interesting snecies have died ont completely... Luckily, those species have been introduced anew now by you and will remain now for ever conserved for the europaean collections,. Dr. Engelmann, who resided a few weeks here in Berlin, and who now departed for South Germany, had the kindness,to let me read the letter, which you wrote to him in Sprinssand which he could not answer so far. This letter excited my interest in a hish degree because it confirmed many experiences, which I had made during my mexican journey,, specially the small! area of distributiorr of most species and the extreme vari- abilityv’of species, which cover a larger distributiomr area. I was then much inclined’ to consider E. sinuatus and E,_sinuatus robustus only as varieties og E.setispinus Engelm, but later I convinced myself,speci- ally throush examination of the seeds, that this does not work well. I, also, wanted to take those mammilariae, which Engeelmannmcollec- te? later under the division Coryphanthae,. into a section of the Echinocacti; however prince Salm and Engelmann did not agree with this at all,and I let the matter rest.. ‚That _you drew the E.Williamsii and the Pelecyphora into the 10 copyright reserved GARDEN BOTANICAL 2 2 Be EZ Anhalonium,I consider as a definitive progress. Most likely, the Leuchtenbergia will belongz there too.- Did you find the Pelecyphora in Mexico ? And in what area does it exist ?°Your observations about M.micromeris are most interesting. .As Pfersdorff does not mention it in n28 Satalogue, I mustfear, that you did not send any seeds.- Your Mam.chlorostisma is most probably M. Pottsii,Siheer ( in Cacta- ceae by Salm); the latter I found near Rio Grande del Norte near the little city of Guerero,it is the only one knowm to me with a zreen stigma.- Cer. Damortieri _ I did not find at Rio Grande del Norte, but on a little river, which is also called Rio Grande near Ocuilcalco; it forms large trees with a stem of 6 - 8 !'and a miehty crown, with bran- ches directed straight up. Your Cer..Chiotilla does not seem‘'to be ee that, if I may permitted to say so, judeine from my 3" hish seedline,, which Pfersdorff has sent me. I would like to doubt that my Ech.saltillensis could be identi- cal with M,robustispina Engelm. ,„thoush both must be closely related. 1 But the former gerows only in the vicinity of Saltillo and has flesh- colored flowers, the latter comes from Sonora and has yellow bloons.- Mixed with E.saltillensis I found still another unguestionable Echi- nocactus with almost the same spine formation as saltillensis; in - Stead of nipples it has large, broad, 5 - 6 edeed (at the base) humps, with a stronely wooly furrow, adpressed very flat on the plant. Body of plant is ball-shaped and very vividly shiny ereen. Did vou not find this plant near Saltillo ?°I had then collected many specimens, but most of them have already spolled before I could even pack them, because each had a large, thick, white worn (sic. E.D.),which had eaten the plant from the inside... The few specimens, which got to Berlin were baptized Echinocactus Poselgerianus, but soon died off,. Unfortu- nately I have neither flower nor fruits of this beautiful plant. I possess only one dried specimen, 9 MIıSSOURI f BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN i 3 ” Your Mam. valida could most likely be identical with my M.pachy- thele „ which with M. erinacea and M.Hopfferi comes also fromLa Binconada. But unfortunately, the M.pachythele has been entirely lost,, and of your valida I own only a small seedling plant,of which not much can be seen as Yyet.. Should you, honored doctor, have hamb still some viable seeds left, I would be delishted to receive a shipment; I. specially de- 4 sire a few erains of Ech.capricorris, With hishest esteemI sien Your most obedient HB) Poselger Dr. phili. How shall I thank you for the eventful and instructive letter, which you had the kindness to address to me on the26th of February and * which I received March 13 ?°I can only say, that in a long time I did not experience such a gay and happy hour as the one, which gave me the first readine of your letter, and I hope to to gain pleasure and know - ledge from it.-In this, it is truly astonishing, how your and my'views coincide !Most of them I can accept without further adogand certain items are spoken as from my own soul, To this belones specially;what you say about the unending variability of most species, which entered your eyes In the same way as it did mine. If this variability of the Cacti was better knowmit could function as a support of Darwin?’5 theo- ry(the 1st edit.ofOriein of Species by Darırin was in 1859 ED. ),. 2hen,, when I travelled in Mexico, the theorges of Darwin were not yet know but, when his opus appeared later,I found that his views contained a very strong affirmation-throush the cactus family. Unfortunately, the professional botanists are of an entirely different opiniom and the ten- dency of our times does not look toward the combining of species,, but rather the opposite,in splittinz them ever more. And this is not only the case in botany; geologists follow the same directiom and truly horrible is the confusion for instance in the ornithology,; where a slichtly sin structure or a sliehtly different: colorstion of the plumage is supposed to be immediately the basis of a new species! - Most striking is the variability of the Stenogoni (ae ? E.D.),and even ® if one would not want to combine the entire division into one species, the different variations could be organized within 4 principle forns. As such principle formsI want to designate E.phylliacanthus;E.obvallatus; E. lanoifer' and E. acifer. E.coptonosonus, (tmhich varies most strikinely) rn does probably not belong to the Stenogoni, with which only the flower has MISSOURI h BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN great similarity. Another, 109g known pecullarityäis the varying by seeding of many [3 ® ® \ e} u ® cti species, specially the Eumammilariae but also certain’ Echinocacti (e.g. Stenogoni). This tendencey of change is specially prevalent with seeds«raised in Europe, ‚less so with original seeds.Such changes are usually attributed to clone formations (this is a guess: on my part.. The German "Bestandbildunge"is not knom to me E.D.),which,howeter, in my opinion habe taken place very rarely. Unfortunately it is quite common,, that such seed-variability is being desiernated as new species, I,further, agree with you completely, that it is quite difficult to determine the identity ofan orieinal plant with one raised in Europe. Because those colossal spines, which contribute to the oustanding beauty of the original plants, suffer often in Europe in a miserable way,ihere- as the body of the plantinoreases frequently with us substantially..This leads to an unsolved questionsWhich organs of other plants are being re- presented by the spines of the cacti ?eWere you able to conduct studies in this important‘point,;and what results did you come to ? Only one of your remarks caused me to be somewhat astonished',, be - cause I can not explain it properly. Youbay, that the flowers of most large Cerei are terminal (verbatim: "on the summit" E.D.),as with the Echinocactus. I can only understand this like this, that the flowers develop from the youngest areoles, similar as with Echinocactus. This case I have never observed, neither in Mexico nor in Europa, nor do I know any Cereus or Pilocereus, which flowers terminally. In ceontrast I 370, thatwith some Cerei, specially Pilocereus, the flowers develop more toward the end of the columns: thus with P.leucocephalus;P. Gro- parius;P. senilis,. Accordine to your description the following Cerei seem to belong to those, whichflower terminallys :P. Hoppenstedte ; In N. Ä i .Tetezo ; C. Teonostle; C. Wollianus and C,Cchiotilla... These are bey- ond any dount all entirely new,but cannot form the majority (as you say) EEE 0 MISSOURI e BOTANICAL copyright reserved CARDEN = a 5 In regard to the various classifications of the genus Mammilaria_,. ee I do not doubt for one moment, that your observation’ concerning the eroup Eumammilaria is correct, namely,,that with them also the „ iu fruit-knot is really not immersum But it may lie hidden in a tiny nipples (E9.) depression bettireen the mammae,so that it does not protrude in any way durinze flowering-or even soon after fading, whereas it is immediate- ly visible with the Coryphantae .Between the two groups stand the Longimammae, which have larzer, fewer, yellow flowers, with whom the fruit- knot protrudes- immediately. To this comes, at least for us in Europe,. another, small pecularity. While the Eumammilariae always set fruit after flowering, the flowers of the Coryphantae (and the Lonrimammae) often miscarry without setting fruit. As to classification,I believe, that the most important issue is to recornize the differences exact- lysthit bacomes of no importance,if one separates the Coryphantae from the Mammilariae ,„ or not,and I would rather decide now for the view of Engelmanm About the strange Mam. micromeris I cannot permit myself any judgement,as I have never seen a live specimen of it, M.spharelata : Salmı puts this Mam. in the first division of his Centrispinae, which he characterizes as "mamillis plus minusve suerulo adventitio barbato supra notatis ". If your spharelata does not show a notch, it may hardly be the genuine one. I myself have seen the true spharelata only in small not well developed specimens so far . There were some later introductions from Mexico of other, small Mammi - lariae, which also did not develop properly, and which were very simi- lar to spharelata but probably not identical.. M,. valida If your valida is identical with my pachythele I can only guess, but not decide any more as of the latter nothing is left any more but my descriptionvof 15 years ago... I found a number of mammilariae near La Rinconada on a hill, which is called De la cruz,;. + | run; “ » in the company of E. lophothele and E. capricornis, which from a near 0 1 6:7 8 9 10 MISSOURI ; BOTANICAL cm copyright reserved CARDEN distance often shows deceliving similarity’in exterior habitat with wr) E. Lophothele, ‚and, which I assumed then to be all relatives of one species.. Here in Berlin, these mammilariae were not being considered as varleties of one species, and I decided to describe the three most diverting forms under the names M,pachytheles M. erinacea’and M,.mela- nocentra.(The name M, pachythele_ was very poorly selected‘, because, nipples (3 D.) thoushsthis variety did indeed have very thick mammae (the German word is verbatim "warts". E.D.),there existedlatready another M, pachythele, described by Salm.).. I also described a very striking va- riety of dophoihelre „‚.smaller in body and almost entirely without spines- under the name E. Rinconensis. This too has become by now ex- tremely rare and I myself do not possess any more.. M. chlorostiema Here too I cannot say with absolute certaintyif it is not identical with M, Pottsii, as I do not have anything any more of this and most of the other plants, which I collected then.. Your description fits however almost completely’with the vlant as I have it in my memoryy only the leneth of 10 cm seems to nme toohish; I would geuess a maximum of 7 cm,..You yourself say, that with a diane- ter of 23 to 3 cm the flowers have a leneth of 2 cm... This one I called relatively larre. M._corriferaWith everything you say about this one I agree. My M. (E) Salinensis is most likely nothing further, than a variety of cornifera, thoush most strikinge..It is most like M,Echinus;Eng..„. nipples (ED.) shaped and strikingly elongated’ and narrowed teats.. M.robustispina: The plants you send, may surely be my Ech (M) Sattillensiszhowever I consider the M,. robustispina- as diverting,. primarly because it zrows in Sonora and the distributior spread’ could hardlyvreach to Saltillo..E..Poselgerianus-is in its entire habitat very diverting but does not exist live any more.. M.Scheerii' is certain- ly quite close, but is very rare, and unknom here in Berlin.. Unfortunately, it died very soon.. E. horripilus I have not found in Mexico.Thoush I never saw it in flower, I always considered it a true Echinocactus. Many Echinocacti‘ have a naked or nearly naked’ ovary,e.g. those, which Pfeiffer combined under the division” Gymnocalfeiumfurther, even with Ech.setispinus the berry is provided with very few small scales., Es» fetispinushas the pecullarity most rare with cacti, that it blooms 3 constantly throush the entire Sumner.. E._Scheerji is the only Echinocactus knom to me,which produces sto- lons. It erows in the sandy plains near Rio Grande del Norte; if one lifts a larger plant'from the ground, one finds, that 3 to 4 horizontal,. pencil-thick stolons to 1 foot emerge, which at their ends have not in- frequently’started little plants, very similar as customary with the Aravae,- Have you not observed this ? This beautiful Echinocactus is now also extremely rare in Europe, . Pilssenlis I found near Hacienda de Guadelupe betweer Zacualti - pan and Ptotoritco el grande in very large quantities. The older plants carryva long, thick,. velvety tuft, pointing towea South-east,from which the flowers develop. Thoueh I cut dom several plants with much effort,, I could find onlyvdried flowers and no fruit nor seeds.Even mom stri- king was for me, kkak’to find almost only full-growm, large plants in thousands of specimens, while I had to search a lone time,to find about 9 10 MIıSSOURI - | BOTANICAL copyright reserved EEER e 6 ” 1 dozem small ones to be collected;thus, it almost seens, that seeds do not set each year and that seedsare able to germinate only'in specially favorable yearss;. for otherwise, one would meet plants of every life development. Here I found also Pil.Celsianus in 2 or 3 huge ne een pecimens. I too had this plan, when I returned from Mexico, but proceeded later only in a minor way and with little success, and, today, I am quite willing,. to describe a plant, which I consider as a beautiful and unique variety of an other, as a new species. The reasorleor this is, that our times are not yet readyvto undertake a sienificant reduction of species in ge- neral) and that it would be at the very last the cacti, with which a beginning should be made... Because the cacti are unfortunately the Parias of the plant familiess No professional botanist will deal with them, and theirrexact scientific study and the general, knowledge in depth’ of this family rests alone in the hands of amateurs..
