MONTANA STATE LIBRARt 930 East Lyndale Avenue mm ur^-vxii^i State of 1 1 iontana \:yffice of the (governor (Jielena TIM BABCOCK Governor August 11, 1967 TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF iMONTANA The preparation of this valuable publication containing authentic facts and figures on the production and marketing of Montana crops and livestock is made possible through the joint efforts of our own Montana Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture. The volume contains information of great value to both public and private organizations as well as many individuals in formulating their business undertakings. The decisions arrived at from consulting the facts and figures herein will prove beneficial to not only those engaged in agricultural production and distribution, but to the entire economy of this great state. Since agriculure, including livestock and crop production, is our largest and most basic industry, I am sure you wish to join me in paying tribute to the many dedicated people who are responsible for the compilation and publishing of these valuable figures for the benefit of all concerned. STATE OF MONTANA MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER Montana cash receipts from farm marketings during 1966 totalled 503 million dollars. This indeed was a new high and was the first time we broke through the half billion barrier. The half billion plus figure further proves the fact that Montana income and economic progress is still pretty much based on agricultural income since this figure shows over double the income of the next ranking wealth producer. This growth would be impossible were it not for authentic and basic facts upon which producers, processors and those in the field of marketing may predicate their decisions. Statistics which are accurate and meaningful arc important to any well managed business. They are most important in the field of agriculture including the producer, processor and distributor. The Montana Department of Agriculture and the Statistical Reporting Service of the United States Department of Agriculture cooperate in collecting assimilating and publishing the many statistics pertaining to our production of crops and livestock. We certainly salute the many farmers and ranchers, state and federal agencies, people in agri-business and the many others who make this authentic publication of Montana agricultsral facts possible. We are confident this fine co-operation will continue in the future in the best interests of not only the agricultural economy, but the economy of Montana as well. 4 AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS FOREWORD Agriculture is Montana's leading industry. Cash receipts from farm marketings and gov- ernment payments totaled $567.8 million in 1966. Montana farms and ranches provided employment for 62,000 persons, and related enterprises furnished employment for many more. Agriculture is undergoing constant change. Average farm size is expanding. Investment in the farm enterprise continues to rise. Yields are being pushed to new highs. The relative importance of a single farm unit to the economy of the Community, State, and Nation is increasing. Complete and accurate information contributes to the success of any enterprise, whether farm unit, private business or corporation. Many people are aware of the annual changes in agriculture but it is the job of the Statistical Reporting Service to measure these changes. The statistics in this bulletin provide the "yardstick" for measuring the relative prosperity of Mon- tana's foremost industry. The data in this publication were assembled with the cooperation of public-spirited Mon- tana people who \Gh:n;arily provided confidential information concerning their individual operations. While most of the basic information was obtained from farmers and ranchers, much supplemental information was acquired from sugarbcet companies, mills and elevators, bean companies, seed processors and dealers, slaughter plants, hatcheries, manufacturers of dairy products, auction markets, railroad companies and others. State agencies, in addition to those in the Montana State Department of Agriculture which contributed significantly were the Livestock Commission, Livestock Sanitary Board. Railroad and Public Service Commission, and the Board of Equalization. Agencies of the U. S. govern- ment which furnished extensive record material were the Agricultural Stabilization and Con- servation Ser\-ice, Soil Conservation Service. Weather Bureau, and the Extension Service. Credit and thanks are due to these and all others who assisted the Statistical Reporting Service in making data available. Funds for the printing of this publication were furnished by the Mon- tana State E>epartmcnt of Agriculture. The text and statistical data presented in this bulletin were prepared by the staff of the Statisical Reporting Service. Unit:d States Department of Agriculture, under the direction of Frasier T. Galloway. Agricultural Statistician-in-Charge. T. J. Kuzelka is due much credit for the preliminary work on this bulletin prior to his retirement December 30. 1966. Estimates published by this agency are available to anyone without charge by writing to the Agricultural Statistician, Post Office Box 1726, Helena, Montana 59601. In This Issue This bulletin contains much information other than county and State data on crop and livestock production. It brings together pertinent data such as climate, government payments, farm income, varieties of wheat and barley: and other facts. A brief explanatory discussion of the important items in this issue is as follows: The Crop and Livestock History for 1964 and 1965 is given on pages 6 and 7. The text describes the weather and other factors affecting crop production and livestock mar- ketings, and gives comparisons with previous years. Cash Receipts, pages 11 to 13, exclude cash values of agricultural products used on farms and ranches. The chart on page 1 3 shows the portion of the total receipts that are repre- sented by the major crops, classes of livestock, and livestock products. Climate Data, page 14, for selected stations give the rainfall and temperatures by counties. Climate may vary widely between various locations because of changes in elevations. State Crop Tables, pages 16 to 24, give total, irrigated and not irrigated data for 11 years, 1957-66. Crops grown principally or entirely on irrigated and not irrigated land are appropriately designated by sub-titles. Quarterly stocks of grains, 1957-66. are recorded on page 25. STATE OF MONTANA 5 County Crop Tables, pagis 26 to 62, present 1964 and 1965 estimates for the total crop, and for portions grown on irrigated land and not irrigated land. No estimates were made for counties with insignificant production. Wheat Production by Protein Groups, pages 36 to 38, is presented in tabular form for the 1964 and 1965 crops. Variety Tables for Wheat on pages 39 to 41, give the percentages each variety repre- sents of the county and State totals. The State table gives percentages of leading varieties for the years 1961 to 1966. Cheyenne, with 54 percent of the total winter wheat acreage, was the leading variety of winter wheat seeded for harvest in 1966; and Thatcher led the other spring wheat class with 39 percent of the total. The most important durum wheat varieties were Wells and Langdon. Variety Tables for Barley on page 50 give each variety as a percent of the State total for the years 1960-1966. Each of the major varieties as a percent of the Crop Reporting District total is also given. Leading barley varieties were Compana and Betzes which together represented 58 percent of the barley acreage seeded in 1966. State Livestock Tables, pages 63 to 68. present data for the years 1956 to 1967. They continue the scries published ih previous volumes on inventory numbers, by age and sex groups, disposition and value of the principal kinds of livestock and livestock products. Cattle on feed by quarters, weight groups, classes and length of time on feed 1960-67 are recorded on page 69. County Livestock Tables, pages 70 to 72, list the January 1 inventory numbers of livestock, for the years 1964, 1965 and 1966. Cattle Movement Tables, pages 73 to 81. list the number of cattle reported on brand inspection certificates of the Montana Livestock Commission. These statistics provide detailed data on the number of steers, heifers, cows, bulls, calves and unclassified cattle which moved across county lines within the State, and out of the State. Separate totals are given for inspec- tion at local country points. Montana markets and designated markets in other States. Information on cattle movement, wheat varieties and wheat protein was assembled with the help of State funds matched with Federal funds received from the Consumer and Marketing Service. United States Department of Agriculture, under the provisions of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946. 6 AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS MONTANA CROPS AND UVESTOCK — 1964 Growth and development of winter wheat seeded for harvest in 1964 was delayed by generally cold weather and the crop did not emerge from dormancy until mid-April. Seed-bed preparation for spring planted crops was underway in nearly all areas by the end of the second week of April. The start of fieldwork was somewhat behind the previous year as a result of blustery weather and wet fields. Planting was nearly complete by June 1, a week to ten days later than in 1963. A number of growers experienced difficulty in getting good stands of spring seeded small grains because of heavy crusting of soil, especially in the north central and eastern areas fol- lowing heavy precipitation in early May. Above normal rainfall in May and June finally ended a three-year drought in north central Montana, and yields in that area were the best in several years. Record breaking rains of 14 to 16 inches falling on an unusually heavy late season mountain snowpack on June 7-8 caused severe flooding of the Sun, Teton, Marias, and Flathead Rivers in western Montana. At least two dams burst and left an awesome path of death and destruction. Thirty-four people lost their lives, and damage to property, crops, livestock, roads and railroads was estimated at $62,000,000. Rapid vegetative growth and warm, dry weather during early summer soon depleted soil moisture, and by mid-July most of the State was dry. This condition prevailed until alleviated by heavy rains beginning in late August. Cool, rainy weather extending into early September delayed completion of grain harvest. Damage by hail, insects and disease was not as extensive as in earlier years. Despite the June floods and dryness in mid-summer, Montana farmers and ranchers pro- duced above average crops of wheat, feed grains, sugarbeets, hay and seeds. Compared with the previous year, the 1964 output was larger for wheat, barley, and cherries, but smaller for all other crops. Feeding of range livestock became common with the advent of cold weather and snow during late November. Southeastern Montana was especially hard-hit by heavy, early season snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures. Additional heavy snowstorms during December with temperatures in the minus thirties over most of the State created severe hardships. In many northern and eastern counties the depth of snow and severe cold, windy weather made feeding and caring for livestock extremely difficult. Above normal death losses of livestock occurred as a result of exposure and lack of feed. Air lifts of hay to livestock in southeastern counties, and release of feed grains to these and other eastern coanties under the U. S. Department of Agriculture Disaster Area designation, eased the pressure on feed supplies. These emergency measures held deaths down materially. How- ever, most livestock were in weakened condition and considerable shrinkage occurred. CROPS: Production of all wheat in 1964 totaled 93,752,000 bushels, the largest crop since 1958. This exceeded 1963 by over a million bushels and established Montana as the 4th ranking State in wheat production in 1964. Winter wheat totaled 5 2.269,000 bushels, 6 percent more than a year earlier. The crop was harvested from 1,8 34,000 acres, which was 3 percent less than the previous year, but yield per acre at 28.5 bushels was the highest since 1911. Durum production at 4,183.000 bushels was 17 percent larger than in 1963 and much above average. A reduction in harvested acreage and a lower yield per acre of other spring wheat resulted in a decline in production of that crop and at 37,300,000 bushels was 6 percent below 1963. Montana's barley crop, estimated at 49,692,000 bushels, was 11 percent larger than the previous year and placed Montana third in the production of this grain. Oats output of 8,547,000 bushels was 1 percent below the 1963 crop. Alfalfa seed production of 5.280,000 pounds, clean basis, was about half the record large 1963 total of 10,800,000 pounds. Red clover seed production was 336.000 pounds. Potato production at 1,254,000 cwt. was down 12 percent from 1963. and production of dry beans at 196,000 cwt. was 8 percent lower. The sugarbeet crop at 973.000 tons was 17 percent below the previous year's tonnage. Acreage harvested at 69,600 was the largest since 1947. The average yield, at 14.0 tons per harvested acre, was 3.8 tons per acre less than in 1963. Hay cuttings totaled 3,380,000 tons. 220,000 tons less than in 1963. Of this total. 2,096,000 tons were alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures. 501,000 were wild hay, 412.000 tons were clover-timothy and the remainder was other tame hay. Sweet cherry output at 2,030 tons compared with only 40 tons a year earlier and 2,280 tons in 1962. Production of sour cherries in 1964 at 530 tons was far above the 1963 output of only 30 tons and more than double the 1962 total. The apple crop of 30,000 bushels was 5,000 bushels less than the previous year. LIVESTOCK: Montana's cattle and calf inventory increased 5 percent during 1964 to 2,758,000 head on January 1 , 1965. This ranked the State 1 2th in numbers of cattle and calves. The number of all sheep and lambs on farms and ranches including those on feed on January 1, 1965 at 1,503.000 head, was 3 percent less than a year earlier. Montana ranked 5th in the number of sheep and lambs. Hogs and pigs on farms and ranches in Montana on January I. 1965 totaled 150.000 head, 12 percent less than the 171,000 head in January 1964. STATE OF MONTANA 7 MONTANA CROPS AND LIVESTOCK — 1965 The 1965 growing season got off to a slow start with cold, wet weather delaying field tillage work about 10 days. The cold weather, marked by freezing temperatures which reduced fruit prespects and damaged sugarbeet plantings over wide areas, continued through May. Extensive reseeding of winter wheat acreage was necessary in eastern and central counties as a result of winterkill. The spring and summer of 1965 were the coldest for several years, and September's average temperature was the lowest for the month on records beginning in 1880. Precipitation, usually the limiting factor in dry-land farming areas, exceeded any year since 1927 for the period April-September and was 40 percent above normal. Wheat in the eastern third of the State and portions of north central areas was badly infested with leaf and stem rusts which reduced prospective yields severely. Intermittent rains maintained abundant soil moisture and benefited plant growth but interfered with harvesting operations for six consecutive weeks beginning in mid-August. Quality of the unharvested crops deteriorated and considerable shattering and lodging of grain occurred. Some grain already cut and swathed, sprouted in the head. Frosts in the early part of September and again on the 17th and 18th, shortened the growing season and damaged dry beans, corn, hay and seed crops. However, output of all field crops except corn for grain, sugarbeets, and seeds was larger than in 19 64. CROPS: Production of all wheat totaled 105,350.000 bushels, 12 percent above 19 64 and the largest output since 195 5. In spite of delayed harvest as a result of wet weather, and an infestation of rust, principally in winter wheat, the yield of all wheat averaged 25.4 bushels per acre, the highest in 50 years. Winter wheat set a new record for production at 67,541,000 bushels and the yield of 29.0 bushels equaled the previous high established in 1911. Acreage harvested at 2,329,000 was 27 percent above the previous year. About 73 percent of the winter wheat acreage was seeded with Cheyenne variety, followed by Winalta with 8 percent and Warrior 6 percent. The durum wheat crop totaled 3,021,000 bushels, 28 percent below the previous year. The yield of 26.5 bushels was the highest recorded since durum wheat estimates began in 1954. Leading varieties of durum in 1965 were Wells with 50 percent of the total acreage; Stewart, 19 percent; and Langdon, 13 percent. Production of other spring wheat at 34,788,000 bushels was 7 percent below 1964. The leading variety, Thatcher with 38 percent of the seeded acreage was followed by Chinook with 15 percent and Canthatch with 1 1 percent. Barley production at 50,050,000 bushels was one percent above the previous year's ■*9, 692, 000 bushels. However, it was harvested from 15 percent fewer acres. The yield of 38.5 bushels per acre was the highest since 1897 and compares with 32.5 in 1964. The leading varieties were Compana with 42 percent of the seeded acreage, Betzes with 20 percent, and Unitan with 12 percent. The oats crop at 9,605,000 bushels was 1,058,000 bushels more than in 1964. The 42.5 bushels per acre yield was the highest since 1915. Flaxseed production at 250,000 bushels was 49 percent more than in 1964. The output of sugarbeets at 748,000 tons was the smallest since the 1955 crop of 724,000 tons. Weather delayed planting about 2 weeks. Low temperatures in late May froze some beets necessitating replanting, especially west of the Divide. The growing season was too cold for optimum growth and development of sugarbeets and yield per acre at 12.4 tons was the lowest since 1951. The potato crop totaled 1,326,000 cwt., 6 percent above 1964. Production of dry beans at 217,000 cwt., clean basis, was 11 percent above the previous year and the largest crop since 1961. Alfalfa seed production totaled 2,295,000 pounds, clean basis, and was less than half the previous year's crop. Unusually damp and rainy weather during much of the growing season hindered a good seed set and delayed seed ripening. Hard freezes in mid-September termi- nated further growth and some stands intended for seed were cut for hay. Red clover seed output of 280,000 pounds was 56,000 pounds less than the 1964 crop. Montana farmers and ranchers harvested a record 3,823,000 tons of hay during 1965 from 2,490.000 acres — the largest acreage since 1953 when 2,585,000 acres were harvested. Alfalfa totaled a record 2,145,000 tons, and 680,000 tons of wild hay were harvested. Sour cherry production totaled only 160 tons compared with 530 tons a year earlier. Sweet cherry output of 130 tons was 1,900 tons below the previous year. LIVESTOCK: The number of cattle and calves, including dairy stock on Montana farms and ranches January 1, 1966, was at an all time high of 2,841,000 head, 3 percent above the 2,758,000 head on hand a year earlier. This marked the fourth consecutive year of increase in the cattle population, and was in contrast with a rather sharp decline in the number of sheep and lambs. The inventory of all sheep and lambs on farms and ranches including those on feed on January 1, 1966, was 1,387,000 head, 8 percent less than a year earlier and a continuation of the downward trend. Historically, the largest number of sheep and lambs in Montana was in 1903 when there were 5,736,000 head of stock sheep. Hogs and pigs on farms and ranches on January 1, 1966 totaled 123,000 head, 18 percent li-ss than the 150,000 head a year earlier and the lowest number in 8 years. AGRICULTURAL STATISTIC?
